LIEUTENANT HENRY O. FLIPPER
Henry O.Flipper was West Point's First Black Graduate and America's First Black Officer. He was stationed at Fort Elliott, Texas in 1879. Henry Ossian Flipper was born a slave on March 21, 1856, in Thomasville, Georgia. He began his education in a woodshed where an old slave taught him the alphabet. After the Civil War, his father, a skilled shoemaker and carriage trimmer, prospered and hired the wife of a former Confederate captain to tutor Henry and his other three sons. In the fall of 1872, Henry learned about a vacancy at the West Point Military Academy. After passing the qualifying examination, Flipper received his appointment on May 25, 1873. Flipper became the first black graduate from West Point on June 14, 1877, after enduring four years of loneliness and isolation among the predominantly white cadets who, from time to time, harassed and mistreated him. When Flipper was handed his diploma, he received a standing ovation from his classmates and the spectators for his four years of dedication and courage. Major General John Schofield, West Point's Superintendent, gave a tribute to Flipper's bravery against isolation and exclusion by his classmates. He stated, "No white cadet had ever been burdened with the hope of an entire race on his shoulders. Anyone knows how quietly and bravely this young manthe first of his despised race to graduate from West Pointhas borne the difficulties of his position; how for four years he has had to stand apart from his classmates as one with them but not of them... ." Henry O. Flipper became the first black officer in the United States Military Service.

24. HENRY O. FLIPPER
History of the first Black Graduate of West Point, henry o. Flipper.
http://www.nps.gov/foda/Fort_Davis_WEB_PAGE/About_the_Fort/Flipper_Site_Bulletin
Second Lieutenant Henry O. Flipper
First Black Graduate of West Point
On February 19, 1999, President Bill Clinton posthumously pardoned Second Lieutenant Henry Ossian Flipper. The event came 59 years after his death and 117 years after the young lieutenant had been found guilty of the charge of "conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman." A short statement penned by President Chester Arthur in June of 1882, upholding the sentence of the court that Flipper be dismissed from the army, had signaled the end to one of the most envied of military careers. At age 21, Flipper had become the first black graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. His assignment in July 1877 to the Tenth U.S. Cavalry, one of two black cavalry regiments organized after the Civil War, was the realization of a personal dream. Flipper's military career was cut short, however, when he was court-martialed for embezzlement of commissary funds, for falsifying government records, and for lying to his commander. At Fort Davis, Texas, in a trial shrouded in prejudice, Lieutenant Flipper, while not convicted of the embezzlement charge, was found guilty of being dishonest and was sentenced "to be dismissed from the service of the United States." Early Schooling Born into slavery at Thomasville, Georgia on March 21, 1856, Henry’s education began when he was eight years old in the wood shop of another slave.

The son of a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Henry Ossawa Tanner was raised in an affluent, well educated African-American family. Although reluctant at first, Tanner's parents eventually responded to their son's unflagging desire to pursue an artistic career and encouraged his ambitions. In 1879, Tanner enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he joined Thomas Eakins 's coterie. Tanner moved to Atlanta in 1889 in an unsuccessful attempt to support himself as an artist and instructor among prosperous middle class African-Americans. Bishop and Mrs. Joseph C. Hartzell arranged for Tanner's first solo exhibition, the proceeds from which enabled the struggling artist to move to Paris in 1891. Illness brought him back to the United States in 1893, and it was at this point in his career that Tanner turned his attention to genre subjects of his own race. In 1893 most American artists painted African-American subjects either as grotesque caricatures or sentimental figures of rural poverty. Henry Ossawa Tanner, who sought to represent black subjects with dignity, wrote: "Many of the artists who have represented Negro life have seen only the comic, the ludicrous side of it, and have lacked sympathy with and appreciation for the warm big heart that dwells within such a rough exterior." The banjo had become a symbol of derision, and caricatures of insipid, smiling African-Americans strumming the instrument were a cliche. In

An informal column about issues affecting the West Point Community
Commentary by Capt. Patrick Murphy
SJA "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stand at times of challenge and controversy." Benjamin Franklin As we head into Super Bowl weekend, we can celebrate two great teams facing off in the Super Bowl for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. As you can read in Jim Fox’s column, I am predicting a big Rams win, 30-17, over the New England Patriots, as long as the Rams continue to follow the ‘Marshall Plan’ (as in Marshall Faulk). But we can also start celebrating another great event which begins today, Black History Month. Whether black or white, African-American or Irish-American, we should all take the time in February to celebrate this part of our American heritage. A trip to Harlem The experience of a lifetime Where else in the Army can you take a day trip to historic Harlem? In what looks to become a West Point tradition, Maj. Steve Redmon, a fellow Judge Advocate in the Department of Law, is running another Harlem Trip Feb. 16. Simply put, this trip is almost as good as the Super Bowl itself. Last year, several buses went down on this exciting and insightful trip. This year’s trip looks to be even bigger and better. The Harlem trip will be departing West Point Feb. 16, at 8 a.m., from Buffalo Soldiers Field. After visiting institutions like the Schomberg Center of Research in Black Culture (a must-see visit in itself), the Apollo Theater (where some of us may have the opportunity to show off our talents), Grant’s Tomb and enjoying some fine soul food cuisine, the trip will return to USMA by 7 p.m., just in time for any Saturday night plans.

Sheldon Brown
Henry O'Meara, my great-grandfather, was a prominent Bostonian in the late 19th century, a time when Bostonians of Irish extraction were beginning to be accepted as a part of the cultural life of the city. He was a journalist, speaker and poet, regularly called upon to take part in the dedications of civic monuments, receptions for visiting dignitaries and other official and semi-official occasions. He was born at St. John's, Newfoundland, and educated at St. Dunstan's College, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. His brother, Stephen O'Meara was the publisher of the Boston Journal, and served as Police Commissioner. This site features an on-line version of his book:
Ballads of America and Other Poems
A contemporary biographic essay on Henry O'Meara:
BOSTON AUTHORS
Courage, mine own, nor falter, but cling for thy life to me
Hear the home-welcoming music, nor faint nor far away
And the conquering Cross ablaze in the heavens above ussee!
We are out of the Shadow of Deathbut one step more to the day.
HENRY O'MEARA
Henry O'Meara, author, poet and journalist was born in St. John, Newfoundland, Sept. 1, 1850. He was educated chiefly at the Central Academy of St. Dunstan's College in Charlottetown, P.E.I. While at the latter he manifested a special interes in the rhetoric class, in which he was associated with the present Archbishop of Halifax, and with the poet-editor Mr. James Jeffery Roche.

William Sydney Porter assumes his reader's have a solid knowledge of the Bible and will not only recognize but understand the allusions he uses in his narrative.
Queen of Sheba The first historical account of the Queen of Sheba appears in the Bible. In I Kings 10: 1-3 it reads: And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions. And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart. And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not any thing hid from the king, which he told her not. According to the biblical account, the Queen of Sheba was a seeker after wisdom and she had tremendous wealth with which to fund her quest. Unfortunately, there are few other factual references to the Queen of Sheba and it is uncertain as to where her country is located. The hints given us by the biblical list of her treasures and wealth suggest Somalia or Ethiopia, which are located in the Horn of Africa, or Oman or Yemen, which are located on the Arabian Peninsula.

NEW AMATEUR and COMMUNITY WLANS
The technical innovation of licence exempt Wireless Networks releasing high speed data interconnections from buildings, makes it possible to develop something entirely new in ICT namely "Amateur and Community LANs". These are not-for-profit, local community owned and managed Social ICT broad band networks. They introduce the welcome prospect of completely profit-free broadband internet access, local non-commercial (internet) radio, television, telephone and video communications....... delivered via a local small community owned co-operative, business or club. (e.g. see The National Telephone Cooperative Association
This provision of free, quality, high speed broadband access to a network can encourage participation in modern neighbourhood community development offering free local mobile telephone calls and the lowest cost internet access.
Initial studies show that our not-for-profit ethic can deliver end user connections for 7% of the existing commercial costs. By being provided at its real low cost, wireless broadband community internet can reduce our dependence on the remote decisions of commercial companies as well as bringing broadband to communities that cannot or will not be reached by cable or 'DSL services.

Although the emigrants hoped for a better life overseas, the departure was still a traumatic moment for them and their friends, and many in the crowd are overcome by their emotions. The ship in this painting is probably sailing to New York, the destination of most British and European emigrants.
