was born William Sydney Porter in Greenboro, North Carolina. His father, Algernon Sidney Porter, was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his parental grandmother and paternal aunt. William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store and on a Texas ranch. He continued to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including that of bank clerk. After moving in 1882 to Texas, he worked on a ranch in LaSalle County for two years. In 1887 he married Athol Estes Roach; they had one daughter and one son. In 1894 Porter started a humorous weekly The Rolling Stone . It was at this time that he began heavy drinking. When the weekly failed, he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist. In 1894 cash was found to have gone missing from the First National Bank in Austin, where Porter had worked as a bank teller. When he was called back to Austin to stand trial, Porter fled to Honduras to avoid trial. Little is known about Porter's stay in Central America. It is said, that he met one Al Jennings, and rambled in South America and Mexico on the proceeds of Jenning's robbery. After hearing news that his wife was dying, he returned in 1897 to Austin. In 1897 he was convicted of embezzling money, although there has been much debate over his actual guilt. Porter entered in 1898 a penitentiary at Columbus, Ohio.

A Much Larger Significance Value can be place on anything from such trivial things as a kiss, to monumental occasions such as the birth of a child. These are what truly have value, not extravagant houses nor luxury sport cars. Just as the a fore mentioned events can have a value put on them, so can art. This leads me to the incredible work of one Henry Ossawa Tanner. Actually, it leads me more to one of his more elaborate paintings, The
Banjo Lesson . This painting can be valued in three very distinct ways. The first of which would be formalism. Meaning the painting is truly beautiful. The magnificence of his work can be seen with each subtle brush stroke, each carefully crafted detail. His painting is truly beautiful, therefore it perfectly falls under the category of formalism. Yet, The Banjo Lesson has more than one specific worth. Which would only seem logical since Henry Osswa Tanners' skill is truly remarkable. Expressivism, being the second type of "value" that can be place on The Banjo Lesson . Due to great deal of emotion Henry Ossawa Tanner clearly put into this painting, it is easy to see why it would make strong emotions stir up inside of anyone who is blessed enough to behold the great grandeur which is

Lieutenant Henry Ossian Flipper, U.S. Army 1856-1940 Henry Ossian Flipper was born in Thomasville, Georgia, on March 21, 1856, into slavery and spent his formative years in Georgia. Following the Civil War, he attended the American Missionary Association Schools in his home state. In 1873 Flipper was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy, and in 1877 he became the first African-American to graduate from the institution. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. From 1878 until 1880 Lieutenant Flipper served on frontier duty in various installations in the southwest, including Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His duties included scouting, as well as serving as post engineer surveyor and construction supervisor, post adjutant, acting assistant and post quartermaster, and commissary officer. In 1881 Lieutenant Flipper's commanding officer accused him of "embezzling funds and of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman." As a result of these charges, he was court-martialed. He was acquitted of the embezzlement charge but was found guilty, by general court martial, of conduct unbecoming an officer. On June 30, 1882, he was dismissed from the Army as required by this conviction. As a civilian, Henry Flipper went on to distinguish himself in a variety of governmental and private engineering positions. These included serving as surveyor, civil and military engineer, author, translator, special agent of the Justice Department, special assistant to the Secretary of the Interior with the Alaskan Engineering Commission, aide to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, as well as an authority on Mexican land and mining law.
