She was born Felicia Dorothea Browne in Liverpool , a granddaughter of the Venetian consul in that city. Her father's business soon brought the family to Denbighshire in North Wales , where she spent her youth. They made their home near Abergele and St. Asaph Flintshire ), and it is clear that she came to regard herself as Welsh by adoption, later referring to Wales as "Land of my childhood, my home and my dead". Her first poems, dedicated to the Prince of Wales , were published in Liverpool in , when she was only fifteen, arousing the interest of no less a person than Percy Bysshe Shelley , who briefly corresponded with her. She quickly followed them up with "England and Spain" [1808] and "The domestic affections", published in 1812, the year of her marriage to Captain Alfred Hemans, an Irish army officer some years older than herself. The marriage took her away from Wales, to Daventry in Northamptonshire until 1814.

Felicia Dorothea Hemans (1794-1835)
Flight of the Spirit
Whither, oh! whither wilt thou wing thy way?
What solemn region first upon thy sight
Shall break, unveiled for terror or delight?
What hosts, magificent in dread array,
My spirit! when thy prison-house of clay
After long strife is rent? Fond, fruitless quest!
The unfledged bird, within his narrow nest,
Sees but a few green branches oer him play,
And through their parting leaves, by fits revealed,
A glimpse of summer sky; nor knows the field
Wherein his dormant powers must yet be tried.
Thou art that bird!of what beyond thee lies
Far in the untracked immeasurable skies
Knowing but thisthat thou shalt find thy guide!
Sabbath Sonnet
How many blessed groups this hour are bending,
Through England's primrose meadow-paths, their way
Towards spire and tower, 'midst shadowy elms ascending,
Whence the sweet chimes proclaim the hallowed day!
The halls from old heroic ages gray
Pour their fair children forth; and hamlets low,
With those thick orchard-blooms the soft winds play

http://www.historyswomen.com/Hemans.html
Felicia Dorothea Hemans English Poetess and Dramatist Felicia Dorothea Hemans was and English poet who produced a large number of books of verse of all kinds including love lyrics, classical, mythological, and sentimental. She was regarded as an epitome of feminine charm during her lifetime, and is probably best known for her poem, “Casabianca”, better known as ‘The boy stood on the burning deck...’. Her most famous works were, “The Vespers of Palermo”, a tragedy which proved a failure when acted at Covent Garden; “The Siege of Valencia”, “The Forest Sanctuary”, “The Songs of the Affections”, “Hymns for Childhood”, and “Scenes and Hymns of Life”. Felicia Heman’s work was without great originality or force, yet it was sweet, natural, and pleasing. But she was too fluent and wrote much and hastily. Her lyrics were her best productions and her poems the most ambitious. She was a woman of true genius, and some of her poems are perfect in sentiment and will live on as long as the English language. She died on May 16, 1835 while living in Dublin .

From LoveToKnow 1911
FELICIA DOROTHEA HEMANS (1793-1835), English poet, was born in Duke Street, Liverpool , on the 25th of September 1 793. Her father, George Browne , of Irish extraction, was a merchant in Liverpool, and her mother, whose maiden name was Wagner, was the daughter of the Austrian and Tuscan consul at Liverpool. Felicia, the fifth of seven children, was scarcely seven years old when her father failed in business, and retired with his family to Gwrych, near Abergele, Denbighshire ; and there the young poet and her brothers and sisters grew up in a romantic old house by the sea-shore, and in the very midst of the mountains and myths of Wales . Felicia's education was desultory. Books of chronicle and romance, and every kind of poetry , she read with avidity; and she also studied Italian , Spanish, Portuguese and German. She played both harp and piano, and cared especially for the simple national melodies of Wales and Spain . In 1808, when she was only fourteen, a quarto volume of her Juvenile Poems

Felicia Dorothea Browne Hemans (1793 - 1835)
Biographical Information:
Felicia's father was George Browne, a Liverpool merchant. Her mother, Felicity Wagner, was the daughter of the Austrian and Tuscan consul to Liverpool. Felicia Browne was born on September 25, 1793, in Liverpool. She was the fifth of seven children. When her father's business failed about 1800, the family moved first to Gwrych, an isolated Welsh seaside house; then, in 1809, to St. Asaph, Wales. Felicia was a clever child who began to read at an early age and did so voraciously from the well-stocked family library. She read novels and poetry, learned several languages, and studied music, primarily under the direction of her mother. According to her sister, Felicia "could repeat pages of poetry from her favourite authors, after having read them but once over." When she was eleven or twelve she spent two successive winters in London, where she was awed by the paintings and sculptures. Her first book of Poems was published in 1808. It was remarkable work to come from a fourteen-year-old, but it received some harsh reviews. A postumous commentator stated: "... our little heroine was exposed to the lash of a public critic - a useful animal enough, but one whom the superstitious infallibility of print exalts to a divinity."

(Born Felicia Dorothea Browne) English poet and dramatist. For additional information on Hemans's life and works, see NCLC, Volume 29.
    INTRODUCTION
A prolific poet whose work appeared frequently on both sides of the Atlantic during her lifetime, Hemans was a true celebrity poet of the early nineteenth century. Although many of her male contemporaries—including William Wordsworth and George Gordon, Lord Byron—have remained much more prominent in literary history, Hemans was in her own time one of the most generally loved writers of the era. She built her reputation upon works that focused on themes dear to the hearts of nineteenth-century readers, including religious, patriotic, and domestic subjects, and mastered a style now typically characterized as sentimental. Hemans's standard genres included long narrative poems and verse dramas, as well as short lyric poems.
    Biographical Information
Hemans was born into the family of a Liverpool merchant whose business collapsed the year she was born; consequently, the family relocated to the Welsh countryside, the natural beauty of which echoed years later in much of her poetry. At a time when only upperand middle-class males enjoyed formal educations, Hemans was fortunate to have parents who believed in educating their daughters. Her mother, a well-educated woman herself, taught Hemans many subjects, and she became proficient in several languages, including German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin. Demonstrating a precocious talent for verse, Hemans published her first two volumes of poetry in 1808, when she was only fourteen. Although the books
