Yossarian was in the hospital with a pain in his liver that fell just short of being jaundice. The doctors were puzzled by the fact that it wasn't quite jaundice. Catch-22 Books (First Lines) I get the willies when I see closed doors. Even at work, where I am doing so well now, the sight of a closed door is sometimes enough to make me dread that something horrible is happening behind it, something that is going to affect me adversely; if I am tired and dejected from a night of lies or booze or sex or just nerves and insomnia, I can almost smell the disaster mounting invisibly and flooding out toward me through the frosted glass panes. My hands may perspire, and my voice may come out strange. I wonder why. Something must have happened to me sometime.

Joseph Heller: Literary giant
Height of fame: Joseph Heller in 1961
Joseph Heller, who has died aged 76, left his mark not just on those who read his books. Like George Orwell with 1984, Heller captured a key concept with the title of his novel, Catch 22 - giving the English language a popular new phrase in the process. The grimly ironic comic novel that describes a Second World War airman's struggle to avoid the horrors of combat struck a chord not just with those who'd fought but with anyone who had ever felt helpless in the face of a capricious bureaucracy. Published in 1961, Catch 22 was at first dismissed by critics but went on to win an enormous following among America's Vietnam war generation and to sell more than 10 million copies in the US alone. Wartime experience Heller was born in Coney Island, New York, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. His father worked as a bakery van driver. Heller himself worked as a messenger boy and filing clerk before volunteering for the US Air Force at 19.

The book served as an antiwar rallying point during the 1960s. Heller is known for showing language to be a frustrating and undependable method of communication in public discourse—military, diplomatic, philosophical, religious, and political—and for creating characters who try to escape the traps and inconsistencies of language. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Heller was educated at New York University. During World War II, he flew more than 60 missions in 1943 and 1944 as a B-25 wing bombardier for the United States Army Air Forces in Europe, earning the rank of first lieutenant. In the 1950s he worked as an advertising writer for high-circulation magazines such as

Since the publication of Catch-22 in 1961, the title of Joseph Heller's first novel has become a byword for the absurdity of war and, by extension, any senseless or illogical circumstance. In these two paragraphs from the opening chapter, we learn how Yossarian, a U.S. Air Force pilot in World War II, fights off boredom in a military hospital. Consider how the steps involved in his private "war" on language introduce the novel's theme of the absurd response to an absurd predicament.

Although Yossarian may appear to be insane, he begins to state his case when he thinks: Insanity is contagious. This is the only sane ward in the whole hospital. Everybody is crazy but us. This is probably the only sane ward in the whole world, for that matter. For instance, on first acquaintance most of us would probably like Appleby: Everything Appleby did, he did well. Appleby was a fair-haired boy from Iowa who believed in God, Motherhood and the American Way of Life, without ever thinking about any of them, and everybody who knew him liked him. Havermeyer was a lead bombardier who never missed. Yossarian was a lead bombardier who had been demoted because he no longer gave a damn whether he missed or not. He had decided to live forever or die in the attempt, and his only mission each time he went up was to come down alive. Loren Catch 22: Chapters 1-5 4 comments July 16, 2003
