Robert Anson Heinlein was born in 1907 in Butler, Missouri, moving shortly thereafter to Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up there and spent summers in Butler. He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City in 1924 and attended a year of college at Kansas City Community College. Heinlein entered the Naval Academy in 1925 and was commissioned in 1929, serving on a variety of ships. He studied advanced engineering and mathematics at UCLA as well as architecture. In April 1939, he wrote "Life-Line" in 4 days and sent it to John W. Campbell at Astounding Science Fiction . In late 1948, he married Virginia Doris Gerstenfeld, who remained his assistant and close companion until his death in 1988 due to a combination of emphysema and related health problems that had plagued him during the last years of his life. Advertisement Yet another SF classic novel has been reissued by Victor Gollancz in a nice large-sized paperback edition, with a bright yellow foldover cover. This is The Door Into Summer , a Robert A. Heinlein novel from 1957 (serialized in 1956), the very height of his glorious "middle period," when he was still writing compact novels, and when he was also writing his juveniles. This novel was published almost in parallel with his first Hugo winner

All You Zombies
He had a load on, and his face showed that he despised people more than usual. Silently I poured a double shot of Old Underwear and left the bottle. He drank it, poured another. His fingers tightened on the glass and he seemed about to throw it at me; I felt for the sap under the bar. In temporal manipulation you try to figure everything, but there are so many factors that you never take needless risks. W.E.N.C.H.E.S. A.N.G.E.L.S. W.E.N.C.H.E.S. W.E.N.C.H.E.S. It was down the passage across from the johns, a steel door to which no one but my day manager and myself had a key; inside was a door to an inner room to which only I had a key. We went there.
There was a notice under the door saying that my lease expired next week; otherwise the room looked as it had a moment before. Outside, trees were bare and snow threatened; I hurried, stopping only for contemporary money and a coat, hat, and topcoat I had left there when I leased the room. I hired a car, went to the hospital. It took twenty minutes to bore the nursery attendant to the point where I could swipe the baby without being noticed. We went back to the Apex Building. This dial setting was more involved, as the building did not yet exist in 1945. But I had precalculated it.
I closed five minutes early, leaving a letter in the cash register telling my day manager that I was accepting his offer to buy me out, to see my lawyer as I was leaving on a long vacation. The Bureau might or might not pick up his payments, but they want things left tidy. I went to the room in the back of the storeroom and forward to 1993.

Robert Anson Heinlein (July 7, 1907 – May 8, 1988) was one of the most popular, influential, and controversial authors of "hard" science fiction. He set a high standard for science and engineering plausibility that few have equaled, and also helped to raise the genre's standards of literary quality. He was the first writer to break into mainstream general magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post in the late 1940s with unvarnished science fiction. He was among the first authors of bestselling novel-length science fiction in the modern mass-market era.
Audio Clips of Famous Heinlein Quotes
Here are 3 audio clips of Robert Heinlein quotes recorded during a radio interview.
These are the actual quotes that inspired Spider Robinson during the writing of Variable Star.
The major themes of Heinlein's work were social: radical individualism, libertarianism, solipsism, religion, the relationship between physical and emotional love, and speculation about unorthodox family relationships. His iconoclastic approach to these themes has led to wildly divergent perceptions of his works. His 1959 novel Starship Troopers was excoriated by some as being fascist. His 1961 novel

He was third of the seven children of Bam Lyle and Rex Ivor Heinlein. By the age of four he had learned to play chess. He was taught by his grandfather, Dr. Alva E. Lyle, before he had learned to read. In 1924 he graduated from Kansas City High School and entered the University of Missouri for one year. He served in the navy from 1925-1934, beginning as a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, then serving as gunnery officer on a number of ships. In 1934 he retired from the Navy on a medical discharge for tuberculosis. The next five years of his life were spent doing graduate study in physics at UCLA, and in various attempts to find careers in such fields as architecture, real estate, mining, and politics. Once during this time he ran for California State Assemblyman.

(Photo by Dd-b licenced through GNU Free Documentation License and Wikipedia Commons) This is the second of three articles reviewing the work of the "Big Three" science fiction authors of the 20th Century. (8/07) Of the Big Three , science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein is probably the most enigmatic. To readers of his work he sometimes appears to speak as a flaming liberal, at others times a reactionary conservative with politics a little to the right of Darth Vader. To make things even more complicated, the real Robert Heinlein was not an easy man to get to know because of his strong feelings about privacy. Last month marks the 100th anniversary of Heinlein's (which is pronounced Hine-line ) birth on July 7, 1907. He was born in Butler, Missouri, the heart of the American Mid-west. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1929, reaching the rank of lieutenant before he was discharged 1934 because of a bout with pulmonary tuberculosis. Heinlein always had an engineering mind and while he was forced to remain in bed convalescing, he came up with the idea of the waterbed which he later described in his books.

How the science fiction master created the template for our looser, hipper, more pluralist world. Just two years later, he was publishing the counterculture classic Stranger in a Strange Land Star Wars Heinlein the Soldier
Heinlein was born in 1907 in Butler, Missouri, the son of a farm equipment salesman. Family connections with the Pendergast political machine in Kansas City won him an appointment to Annapolis. He identified proudly with the Navy for the rest of his life, although he was retired in 1934 because of tuberculosis, just five years into his active service. Heinlein sold his first S.F. story in 1939 and almost instantly became the acknowledged king of his field, under the tutelage of legendary Astounding editor John Campbell. In the Campbell era, with Heinlein leading the way, the S.F. magazines moved from didactic travelogues and amateurish intergalactic epics to intelligent treatments of politics, religion, and sociology. Heinlein was also the first S.F. writer to break into respectable "slick" fiction magazines such as the
