(Now with 2002 Appendix)
Go to: Introductory Notes In each section, the first paragraph of bold text is the original prophecy, as given in the 1950 magazine article " Pandora's Box " by the S.F. writer Robert Anson Heinlein (author of "Starship Troopers" and "Stranger in a Strange Land"). Next I have appended comments of my own arguing for and against the accuracy of the prediction, and a score, running in each case from 0, a total miss, up to 1, utterly perfect. The first indented paragraph after this gives the postscripts from his amended version for 1966, " Where To? " Lastly come the afterthoughts for the 1980 version, as collected in " Expanded Universe ." Reactions and counter-arguments are welcome. Most of the material here was first posted in 1997 (which was of course a bit hasty see my page for an excuse), but updates have been added right up to the deadline. (Why did I write this? Well, Heinlein's science fiction earned him a place among the Golden Age greats, but he had a habit of writing his opinions into his stories, first as aphorisms, later as sermons. They may have been wittily expressed, but that's no evidence that his judgement was reliable! "Pandora's Box" is an opportunity to evaluate whether his "homespun common sense" was an accurate guide to how the real world works.)

Executive summary: Starship Troopers Military service: US Navy (1929-34) Regarded as the most influential writer of modern science fiction, author Robert Heinlein is ranked as one of the four luminaries of the Golden Age of science fiction, along with Isaac Asimov Theodore Sturgeon , and A. E. van Vogt . He is also credited with evolving science fiction as a genre from the gee-whiz gadgetry obsessions of Hugo Gernsback and the testosterone soaked pulp fiction of Robert E. Howard into an impressively diverse and sophisticated literature. Under the influence of Heinlein science fiction became a recognized vehicle for exploring major themes of human existence and for describing not just new technologies, but whole new realities , all while telling gripping tales of mystery, romance, and adventure. Even the idea of creating "future histories" and laying out the political, technological, and historical development of peoples and worlds (i.e. "world building") as a prelude to writing the novels and short stories to be set there had its start with Robert Heinlein. In all of the above, Heinlein set the new standard and other writers strove to follow.

The Myth of Sisyphus "Of arms and man I sing..."
Virgil's "The Aeneid" I recently picked up a copy of Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" with the highest of expectations. Already almost 40 years old, the book was supposedly a classic of hard science fiction, albeit a controversial one. Mixing philosophy with political ideas in a futurist society at war with humanity at war with an alien species... how unique! I bought the book and read the book slowly so as to capture the tone well. Drinking in Heinlein's concept of human nature and an idealized future society, it took me three days to finish his treatise-cum-novella. Heinlein's 22nd century earth is at war with an arachnid "bug" race from another galaxy. "They are tough and we are tough and only one of us will win and the other gets wiped out," explains Heinlein's protagonist Johnny Rico of the rugged Mobil Infantry, illuminating well the state of mind of the war between Japan and the United States during World War II , as well as the barely restrained ferocity of the Cold War afterwards. Rico's old high school teacher plays the stand-in for Heinlein's philosophy of an "improved" future society which emerges after following the "decadence and collapse of the democracies of the 20th century" after which the surviving veterans take over. Heinlein pays unconvincing lip service to the idea of a free society where civic service is voluntary and civil liberties are respected, but the soul of his argument lies in the military and the service of the State. The formation of young men and women does not take place primarily in

Centenary a modern sci-fi giant
June 30, 2007 12:35 am
Robert Heinlein (above), at his home at Bonny Doon (Santa Cruz), Calif., in 1966, wrote science fiction for all ages. While his novels such as 'Stranger in a Strange Land' included sophisticated social and political themes, one of his children's books inspired the early TV show 'Tom Corbett, Space Cadet' (left). P RINCE WILLIAM CountyWhen Robert A. Heinlein opened his Colorado Springs newspaper on April 5, 1958, he read a full-page ad demanding that the Eisenhower administration stop testing nuclear weapons. The science-fiction author was flabbergasted. He called for the formation of the Patrick Henry League and spent the next several weeks writing and publishing his own polemic that lambasted "Communist-line goals concealed in idealistic-sounding nonsense" and urged Americans not to become "soft-headed." Then Heinlein made an important professional decision. He quit writing the manuscript he had been working oneventually it would become one of his best-known books, "Stranger in a Strange Land"and started work on a new novel. "Starship Troopers" was published the next year, and quickly became perhaps the most controversial sci-fi tale of all time. Critics labeled Heinlein everything from a Nazi to a racist. "The 'Patrick Henry' ad shocked 'em," he wrote many years later. "'Starship Troopers' outraged 'em."

Wisdom Found in Science Fiction
Author Robert Heinlein Credited for Life Lessons
This article was published on Monday, January 7, 2008 2:20 PM CST in Columns
It's not too late for New Year's resolutions. (I know because I haven't delivered my last Christmas gift yet!) Longtime readers of The Morning News should know these words by heart, though, because I reprint them every year. They originally belonged to the father of science fiction, Robert Heinlein.
Heinlein almost certainly didn't consider excerpts from the notebooks of his most famous character, Lazarus Long, "resolutions." He denied they were wisdom, for that matter. But his approach to life has colored so many of my attitudes about so many things, and what he wrote in "Time Enough for Love" (1973) is better than anything I could ever think up myself.
So, with hat tipped to the late Mr. Heinlein, who is, I hope, bellied up to a bar somewhere in Boondock, I give you these borrowed words to live by as the holidays of 2007 roll into the doldrums of January 2008:
* Certainly the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you; if you don't bet, you can't win.

Penguin Imprint Focus: Roc/Ace Charles Stross Touches Base, by Charles Stross
Fri, 12/14/2007 (View entire post here The Unquiet Ghost of Robert A. Heinlein Hi! This year, 2007, is the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Robert Anson Heinlein My next novel, "Saturn's Children", is (picture me eating a hat) a Heinlein tribute novel. (I wouldn't call it a pastiche I can't imitate his diction or voice closely enough for that but if you pick it apart at the seams you'll see his patterns in the pieces.) And to add to the indignity, his unquiet shade told me, "son, everyone else is writing fifties juveniles *your* job is to write a late-period piece!" I'm 43. I began to wonder: what if Heinlein had been born 43 years later, in 1950? What would the 57-year-old Heinlein be writing today if he'd lived into the age of the internet and anime, and the genre of nanotechnology and the singularity? When he was 57, the real Robert A. Heinlein was probably working on "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", arguably the best and most memorable novel of his later years. "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" runs along the gleaming rails of one of his standard story structures, "the man who learned better". (Heinlein maintained, among other things, that there were only four core narrative structures in fiction.) So I had just decided to abstract this standard plot from his toolbox when a voice whispered in my ear: "she's got red hair, and a nipple that goes 'spung'!"

Less programming, more skill?
I just picked up a copy of Programmers at Work (disclosure: that's a paid Amazon link) and I've been looking forward to reading it. I've only read the Charles Simonyi chapter; I got distracted by other books and other things, but it's sitting there on my nightstand waiting.
So it was pretty cool to see Jeff Atwood quote the book on his blog entry about becoming a better programmer by not programming . I agree with the quote:
Does accumulating experience through the years necessarily make programming easier?
Bill Gates : No. I think after the first three or four years, it's pretty cast in concrete whether you're a good programmer or not. After a few more years, you may know more about managing large projects and personalities, but after three or four years, it's clear what you're going to be. There's no one at Microsoft who was just kind of mediocre for a couple of years, and then just out of the blue started optimizing everything in sight. I can talk to somebody about a program that he's written and know right away whether he's really a good programmer.
And I definitely agree with this from Jeff:
You won't you cannot become a better programmer through sheer force of programming alone. You can only complement and enhance your existing programming skills by branching out. Learn about your users. Learn about the industry. Learn about your business.
