The Future History series
by Robert A. Heinlein
Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson November 2001
Robert A. Heinlein's Future History series developed as never before the key vision of the future as complex, evolving, and filled with real people possessing concerns we can recognize and empathize with. Whatever comes will be our future and we will live in it every day. In the thirty years between the first story's publication and Americans walking on the Moon, many of Heinlein's futuristic concepts became part of the everyday mental furniture of forward-looking people, including the teenagers and scientists and engineers and politicians and military men and voters and taxpayers who made happen the American space program. The heart of the Future History series appeared in Astounding Science Fiction from 1939 through 1942, with another clutch of stories mostly in the slick magazines after World War II, 1946 through 1950. A couple of short stories appeared later. The 1941 novel Methuselah's Children was revised and expanded for book publication in 1958, and the longer novel

It's impossible for me to pick a favorite Heinlein. I only know that when I heard on the news that he'd passed away back in May of 1988, I cried. My daughter, Jacquie, was only three and couldn't understand why Mommy was so sad. I fell in love with Lazarus Long in " Methuselah's Children " and have worn out three copies of " Time Enough For Love The Number of the Beast The Cat Who Walks Through Walls " and " To Sail Beyond the Sunset " are all part of a universe I wish we lived in. I've read every one of his books and have an almost complete collection of Heinlein's works, thirty-six novels and short story collections and not a sour note in the entire symphony. Men are more sentimental than women. It blurs their thinking. Certainly the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you; if you don't bet, you can't win. Always listen to the experts. They tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it. Delusions are often functional. A mother's opinions about her children's beauty, intelligence, goodness, etcetera ad nauseam, keep her from drowning them at birth. A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.

Robert A(nson) Heinlein (1907-1988) Prolific American writer, one of the grand masters of science fiction with Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke . Heinlein produced during his career fifty novels and collections of short stories. Heinlein admired highly motivated men of action - like Howard Hawks in his movies - and attacked religious hypocrisy and corporate power games. His later works, in which his right-wing views mixed with fast-moving stories and fascination with with the paranormal, earned him the reputation of being a militarist, even a "fascist". However, a number of his book gained cult status among members of the counterculture. "Furthermore, although a flaming liberal during the war, Heinlein became a rock-ribbed far-right conservative immediately afterward. This happened at just the time he changed wives from a liberal woman, Leslyn, to a rock-ribbed far-right conservative woman, Virginia... I used to brood about it in puzzlement (of course, I never would have dreamed of asking Heinlein - I'm sure he would have refused to answer, and would have done so with the uttermost hostility), and I did come to one conclusion. I would never marry anyone who did not generally agree with my political, social, and philosophical view of life." (from I, Asimov: A Memoir
