Connecting the Holocaust to Book Burning
Two of the actions which Nazi Germany is most infamous for are probably the burning of books and the burning of people. Are the two connected? Curiously, the idea that the former would lead to the latter was famously predicted more than 100 years before the Nazi takeover of Germany by German author Heinrich Heine. What did he understand that others do not? What is the connection between burning books and burning people?

Buch Der Lieder: Lyrisches Intermezzo: ‘Ein Fichtenbaum’
A single fir-tree, lonely,
On a northern mountain height, Sleeps in a white blanket, Draped in snow and ice. His dreams are of a palm-tree, Who, far in eastern lands, Weeps, all alone and silent, Among the burning sands.
Buch Der Lieder: Lyrisches Intermezzo: ‘Es liegt der heisse Sommer’
There lies the heat of summer
On your cheek’s lovely art: There lies the cold of winter Within your little heart. That will change, beloved, The end not as the start! Winter on your cheek then, Summer in your heart.

All special charters of freedom must be abrogated where the universal law of freedom is to flourish.
Freedom

As the stars are the glory of the sky, so great men are the glory of their country, yea, of the whole earth. The hearts of great men are the stars of earth; and doubtless when one looks down from above upon our planet, these hearts are seen to send forth, a silvery light just like the stars of heaven.
Greatness
Atheism is the last word of theism. Atheism Be entirely tolerant or not at all; follow the good path or the evil one. To stand at the crossroads requires more strength than you possess. - in Hans Zinsser's "As I Remember Him," p. 40 Goodness Religion Tolerance Communism possesses a language which every people can understand. Its elements are hunger, envy, death. Communism Each violet peeps from its dwelling to gaze at the bright stars above.

heinrich heine and German Romantic Poetry an Introduction.
http://www.poetrymagic.co.uk/poets/heine.html
Heinrich Heine
Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was born in Düsseldorf, the son of a Jewish tradesman. When business failed, Heinrich was sent to Hamburg, where his rich banker uncle Salomon prepared him for a career in commerce. Heine studied law at the universities of Bonn, Berlin and Göttingen, gaining his degree in 1825, but was always more interested in literature. To avoid the restrictions placed upon Jews, Heinrich converted to Protestantism and changed his first name to Heinrich, but didn't in fact enter government service. He had made his poetic debut by 1821, brought out a collection of verse (inspired by unreturned love for cousins Amalie and Therese) by 1827, and thereafter supported himself by poetry, journalism, travel books, and works on philosophy and German literature. In 1834 he fell in love with Crecence Eugénie Mirat, an illiterate sales girl, marrying her seven years later. As a journalist in Paris, Heine gradually aligned himself with French progressive thought, becoming unpopular with conservative opinion in German, even having his books banned in 1835. He admired Napoleon, supported strikes by Silesian weavers, and corresponded with Karl Marx. In 1844 his uncle left him a small pension, and another was provided by the French Government — both much needed when Heine's health deteriorated, leaving him paralyzed and partly blind. Nonetheless, Heine still managed to produce one of his finest collections (Romazero) and to fall in love with Camilla Selden, an Austrian woman, for whom he wrote particularly fine poetry. He died in Paris in February 1856, a controversial figure, continuing so even under the Nazis where his songs were printed unattributed.

Only Genius Has A New Word For A New Thought
by Elisabeth Hellenbroich. Translated by Rick Sanders.
Printed in The American Almanac , December 8 and December 15, 1997.
End of Page Poets Site Map Page The following article is excerpted from a longer piece, which appeared in the German-language journal Ibykus , First Quarter 1997, and was translated by Rick Sanders. (The translator's notes are placed within [brackets].
Only genius has a new word for a new thought Heinrich Heine ``I don't care very much about my fame as a poet, nor am I concerned whether my songs will be praised or blamed. But you shall lay a sword on my grave, for I have been a good soldier in the war of liberation of mankind,'' wrote the poet Heinrich Heine about himself, in The Voyage from Munich to Genoa.
This year, 1997, we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Heinrich Heine who, along with Schiller and Goethe, belongs to the most beloved poets of Germany, and of the world. Metaphor, jokes, and wordplay were among the poetic weapons which Heine employed to liberate his contemporaries from their romantic navel-gazing, their flight into virtual reality, political correctness, flat empiricism, and slavish obedience to authority. Heine created his poems during a time of political agonyafter the Congress of Vienna of 1815, when, under the leadership of England and the Austrian Prince Metternich, the Restoration of the European monarchies began. Many genuine republicans and humanists, who had hoped that the ideals of the American revolution might also be realized in Europe, (for the first time in history, in the preamble of the American Constitution, the inalienable right of all men to development, was put into writing), felt themselves betrayed, and relegated to past history.
