by David Yezzi A O.E.D. One reason for the success of this fine poem, I think, is that it allows readers to imagine briefly that they, too, have met Auden or at least could have. I sometimes wonder, if I were to attempt to write such a poem, whom I would choose to write about. Where are the Audens of today? On whose back would one hope to write? H echt poems make use of landscape in several different ways, drawing on a technique of Hardy and also of E. A. Robinson. Yvor Winters, in his marvelous book Edwin Arlington Robinson
We stood by a pond that winter day,
And the sun was white, as though chidden of God,
And a few leaves lay on the starving sod;
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fervourless as I.
The falling leaf inaugurates The reign of her confusion; The pounding wave reverberates The dirge of her illusion. And Home, where passion lived and died, Becomes a place where she can hide, While all the town and harbor side Vibrate with her seclusion.

Anthony Hecht
(Filed: 25/10/2004)
Anthony Hecht, the poet who has died aged 81, created much of his most
enjoyable work by updating the classics, for example reworking Horace's odes
as though the Latin author were a mooching Manhattanite.
But it is unlikely that he will be remembered for this. His experiences in the war, during which he served on the front line of the infantry as the American army advanced into Germany, were seldom absent from his poetry. On one occasion he saw a crowd of German women and children, who were waving white flags, massacred by his own side's machine-guns; later, he was in a division that liberated a concentration camp. The camp was Flossenburg, which was attached to Buchenwald - it was where the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer died. When Hecht reached it, 500 prisoners were dying of typhus every day.

Allen, Dick: Flight and Pursuit (University of Louisiana Press, 1987) (Amazon) Allen, well-versed in the New Physics, is also a superb narrative poet who writes with skill in meters. There are other books by Allen, and his work appears in all the journals, but this is a good place to start. A founder of the Expansive movement, Allen is one of its best teachers as well. Collected Later Poems by Hecht, Anthony
Anthony Hecht is one of America’s most celebrated living writers, a Pulitzer Prize winner and one-time Poet Laureate of the USA. Now in his eighties, he has earned a place alongside such poets as W. H. Auden, Robert Frost, and Elizabeth Bishop.
Here under one cover are his three most recent collections – The Transparent Man, Flight Among the Tombs , and The Darkness and the Light . The perfect companion to his Collected Earlier Poems (continuously in print since 1990), this book brings the eloquent sound of Hecht’s music to bear on a wide variety of human dramas: from a young woman dying of leukemia to the tangled love affairs of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; from Death as the director of Hollywood films to the unexpected image of Marcel Proust as a figure skater:
