William Hazlitt
Profile
Essayist and critic; born at Maidstone the son of a minister and spent several years of his early life with his parents in America. A few months after their return to England in 1787 his father was appointed minister of the chapel in Noble Street, Wem , in Shropshire and William spent the rest of his childhood and youth here. His home, now called Hazlitt House, still stands in Noble Street as a private dwelling. He was educated at private schools and often accompanied his mother and sister to gatherings of ladies in and around Wem, part of the social and pastoral work expected of a minister's family. William was a great admirer of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and when the poet, about to become a minister himself, preached a probationary sermon at the Unitarian Church in Shrewsbury he walked all the way there in freezing weather to hear him. Hazlitt was bitterly disappointed when Coleridge received an annuity from Josiah Wedgwood, which enabled him to pursue a literary career, for this allowed him to leave Shrewsbury and prevented Hazlitt from making what he had hoped would be a close friendship. Hazlitt at this time was around nineteen years of age and of course, embarking on a literary career himself, was soon to become a friend of the Romantic poets. Among his own best works are Characters of Shakespeare's plays Lectures on the English poets (1818-19) and The spirit of the age From

from A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature by John W. Cousin Table of Contents Introduction A B ... Appendix HAZLITT, WILLIAM (1778-1830). —Essayist and critic, b. at Maidstone, was the s. of a Unitarian minister. At his father's request he studied for the ministry at a Unitarian Coll. at Hackney. His interests, however, were much more philosophical and political than theological. The turning point in his intellectual development was his meeting with Coleridge in 1798. Soon after this he studied art with the view of becoming a painter, and devoted himself specially to portraiture, but though so good a judge as his friend, J. Northcote, R.A., believed he had the talent requisite for success, he could not satisfy himself, and gave up the idea, though always retaining his love of art. He then definitely turned to literature, and in 1805 pub.

"Polite Conversation": Performance, Politics, and National Unity in William Hazlitt's Theater Criticism
In 1820, towards the end of his first stint as a regular drama reviewer for various weekly and monthly journals, William Hazlitt championed the leisure pursuit of play-going in the following way: Our head is stuffed full of recollections on the subject of the Drama, some of older, some of later date, but all treasured up with more or less fondness; we, in short, love it, and what we love, we can talk of for ever. . . But, as happens in some of these instances, we love it best at a distance. We like to be an hundred miles off from the Acted Drama in London, and to get a friend (who may be depended on) to give an account of it for us; which we read, at our leisure, under the shade of a clump of lime-trees. (18: 343-4) The merits of a new play, or of a new actor, are always among the first topics of polite conversation. One way in which public exhibitions contribute to refine and humanise mankind, is by supplying them with ideas and subjects of conversation and interest in common. The progress of civilization is in proportion to the number of common-places in society. For instance, if we meet with a stranger at an inn or in a stage-coach, who knows nothing but his own affairs - his shop, his customers, his farm, his pigs, his poultry - we can carry on no conversation with him on these local and personal matters: the only way is to let him have all the talk to himself. But if he has fortunately ever seen Mr. Liston act, this is an immediate topic of mutual conversation, and we agree together the rest of the evening in discussing the merits of that inimitable actor, with the same satisfaction as in talking over the affairs of the most intimate friend. (Archer and Lowe 135)

William Hazlitt (1778-1830) was probably the most distinguished of the non-fiction prose writers to emerge from the Romantic period; an associate of Wordsworth and Coleridge, he went on to write some of the greatest essays in the English language. The Spirit of the Age , a collection of contemporary portraits or newspaper profiles, is acknowledged as a critical masterpiece, but a number of his other works - Political Essays, The Plain Speaker, Characters of Shakespeare's Plays, A View of the English Stage, The Round Table, Table Talk - have been too long neglected and most of his writings are out of print.

Executive summary: English literary critic, essayist Samuel Taylor Coleridge to Shrewsbury, where young Hazlitt went to hear him preach. Coleridge encouraged William Hazlitt's interest in metaphysics, and in the spring of the next year Hazlitt visited Coleridge at Nether Stowey and made the acquaintance of William Wordsworth . The circumstances of this early intercourse with Coleridge are related with inimitable skill in a paper in Hazlitt's Literary Remains (1839). On visits to his brother in London he made many acquaintances, the most important being a friendship with Charles Lamb , said to have been founded on a remark of Lamb's interpolated in a discussion between Coleridge, Godwin and Holcroft , "Give me man as he is not to be." He also formed an acquaintance with John Stoddart, whose sister Sarah he married in 1808. In October 1802 he went to Paris to copy portraits in the Louvre, and spent four happy months in Paris. When he returned to London he undertook commissions for portraits. but soon found he was not likely to excel in his art; his last portrait, one of Charles Lamb as a Venetian senator (now in the National Portrait Gallery), was executed in 1805. In that year he published his first book
