Feminist Biblical Interpretation 1500-1920
Marla J. Selvidge
Continuum 1996
Selvidge introduces us to the ideas of many female, feminist interpreters of the Bible who were active before 1920. I could name many such women who did not make it into this book - for instance, see Gerda Lerner's The Creation of Feminist Conscientiousness 1) "In our struggle for self-identity, survival, and liberation in a patriarchal society and church, Christian women have found that the bible has been used as a weapon against us but at the same time it has been a resource for courage, hope, and commitment in this struggle." page 5 2) " Margaret Foster writes of her own experiences of that stress when she says: "[A]nd a feminist is no shrieking harridan obsessed with destruction but a man or a woman who strives to secure a society in which neither sex finds gender alone a handicap to their progress." page 5 3) "While the term "feminism" may be a twentieth-century invention, its ideals and strategies were practiced long before the suffragettes won the vote, and long before Mary Daly, Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Phyllis Trible, Naomi Goldenberg, or Rosemary Radford Ruether penned their scathing critiques of the religious literatures and power structures of society." page 6 4) "There is no such thing as a completely objective or perfect interpretation of the Bible." page 13

50. Romantic Circles: "The Last Man And The New History" By Greg Kucich

The Last Man and the New History
Greg Kucich

University of Notre Dame
The narration [of history] inspired me with strange feelings. . . . -The Creature (Frankenstein) The Creature's distressed and feminized reaction to historical experience, which causes him to weep along with Safie for the accumulated sufferings of humanity, embodies one of the most compelling concerns of Mary Shelley's overall writingshow the construction and gendering of the past affects the present. The Last Man constitutes her most complex engagement with that question, which merits particular attention in this virtual forum because it intersects with a widely shared and relatively unexplored pattern of historical investments among the period's women writers. These forms of revisionary historicism helped inspire in Mary Shelley a lifelong fascination with what she called "the philosophy of history" (Lives 2: 73), and she put the "lessons" she learned from her extensive reading in such a historical school to use in a wide variety of experimental formatsfrom the Creature's tearful response to historical suffering in Frankenstein, to the records of domestic relations that control the historical formats of most of her later novels, to the "history of [the] heart" that she foregrounds in her five-volume 1830s series of biographical lives (Lives 1: 90). Shelley's critics have begun to examine the innovative character of these historiographical procedures (O'Dea; Lew; Smith), but it would be particularly revealing at this point to trace the strategies through which The Last Man offers one of the most complex and problematic formulations of the revisionary historiography practiced by so many of Shelley's female contemporaries.

This listing is produced from an index that was originally prepared by Bill Rounce and entered onto computer by George Bell with the assistance of Sandra (Hope) Bell. This index is one of a number kindly made available to GENUKI by George Bell from his large collection of Northumberland and Durham indexes Before 1752 (in Britain) the year began on March 25th (Lady Day). Dates between January 1st and March 24th were therefore at the end of the year rather than the beginning. To avoid confusion, dates in this range are marked with an asterisk e.g. 12 Feb 1696*. Such dates are sometimes seen in the form 12 Feb 1696/7.
Calendar Reform
From 1752 the year began on January 1st instead of March 25th.
