Then after a break she added onto the series -
Requiem For The Sun
So far these are the only books I have in this series. Will eventually continue as I know there as been a further publication. Just wondered if anyone else has read this series. What did you think of it and have you got the recent book? rune View Public Profile Find More Posts by rune 8th November 2004, 01:37 AM permalink tonic vbmenu_register("postmenu_47646", true); Registered User Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Canada Posts: 217 Re: Elizabeth Haydon Well I've read every book in the Symphony of Ages. It's a really good series in my opinion though I've heard many who've hated it. All in all it's something original, not all aspects of it, though I like a good noevl that can bring you back to the roots of fantasy. Plus I don't usually read novels with women as main characters, not cause Im sexist or anything but because I can't relate lol obviously since I'm male but Rhapsody was well thought out and I found her to be a great protagonist. The newest addition to the series was pretty good, I think she's pushing it here though the reason I didn't read it right after the end of the other books was because I had enough. Now that I read it I don't regret it though it does have a lot to do with dragons and that really isn't my thing. I'd suggest you pick it up though, just to see for yourself.

Tor, 479 pages
Order this book Rhapsody is a former prostitute turned Singer, practitioner of a musical magic that manipulates reality by use of the true names of things. Fleeing from an irate former client, Rhapsody begs protection from a pair of strangers she encounters in an alley. In the process, accidentally, she calls upon her Naming ability, and re-Names one of them.
The re-Named manonce known as the Brother, now called Achmedis a professional assassin on the run from the demon who enslaved him. Rhapsody's inadvertent use of her craft, it turns out, has done more than just change his name: it has altered his essential nature, thereby breaking the demon's hold. Knowing the demon will never rest until it has found its former slave, Achmed and his companiona giant, green-skinned ex-soldier named Grunthordecide to seek refuge in a place of power greater than the demon's: within the root system of Sagia, the sacred white oak that stands in the forest where time began, and is tied to all things that grow. Because of Rhapsody's magical strength, and also because they aren't certain they won't need her to change Achmed's name back again, Achmed and Grunthor kidnap her, and take her with them underground.
Traveling Sagia's enormous root system, which extends to every part of the earth, the three reluctant companions gradually become fast friends. Their journey takes them through the fire at the heart of the world, which transforms all of them in some way; they also encounter the Primal Wyrm, asleep within the earth. When at last they emerge, in a strange land on the other side of the world, they are shocked to discover that more than fourteen centuries have passed while they were underground. As they explore the unfamiliar country, colonized by the descendants of their own ancestors, they begin to recognize the workings of a frighteningly familiar evil. They aren't the only ones, it seems, who successfully crossed time and space. Achmed may not have escaped his nemesis after all.

The Thief Queen's Daughter by Elizabeth Haydon
Title: The Thief Queen's Daughter Author: Elizabeth Haydon Genre: Fantasy, second in series Summary: A young Nain explorer, Ven Polypheme, begins his second quest at the king's request What is the history of an artifact inherited from the previous king? Ven's search starts in the Gated City, on Market Day. Will the mystery be solved before the day ends and Ven is trapped inside? The Take-Away: As stated, this is a second in the series, but Haydon doesn't spend unnecessary time with the previous story. I didn't feel like I was missing out by not starting at the beginning. Ven's circle of friends must have been established in the first book, however, and it's a vast circle. The variety leads me to believe that this will be a longer series with good adventures. The target audience is young adult, however, it has the feel to the book as the first Harry Potter titles did. Fun, adventurous, but easily developed into something more. This is a series I would keep my eye on, depending on how the stakes are raised in the next book. One of my favorite characters was McLean, a StorySinger who knows the histories, songs and stories of various people of the land. His role is minor, but he is interesting. McLean is completely trustworthy; StorySinger take an oath to never lie. I'm hoping that this is a set-up for a future book.

Elizabeth Haydon,
Rhapsody: Child of Blood
(Tor, 2000)
While the premise of the story in Rhapsody: Child of Blood is interesting, there are too many problems that weigh it down. It is a romance novel thinly disguised as fantasy so, if you do not like romance novels beware it is unlikely you will like this book whatever its virtues. Characterization was main thing that just kept interfering with my ability to enjoy the story. For example, Rhapsody, we are told at the beginning, is a woman of astounding beauty. She's of a mixed species, as are most of the other women in the book. Yet the author never explains why the heroine is so much more beautiful than any other female. And after her walk through the fire her beauty ascends to the level of a goddess. Scene after scene shows men becoming slack-jawed idiots and burning with lust at the mere sight of her. Women and children mob her like she's a movie star. The author tries to introduce some counterbalance by giving Rhapsody two flaws she was briefly a prostitute in her past and she's not aware of her goddess-like beauty. Extreme beauty, if handled well, need not be a barrier to the reader believing the story. After all, Tolkien did something very similar when he wrote the tale of Beren and Luthien. Luthien was also of mixed blood but the weight of the past stories and culture made it totally believable when Tolkien wrote that Luthien was the most beautiful creature that has ever walked the earth. Not so with Rhapsody. Had it been handled differently, those flaws might have been enough to humanize an increasingly saccharine and hard-to-believe character. Unfortunately, the prostitution explanation was very brief and the only backflash of those days shows her sleeping with a man she hated in order to prevent him from doing so with a child (the child being used as blackmail). So the very thing the author uses to try to humanize Rhapsody is undercut by showing her sacrificing herself to save a child from a horrible crime. This does not show a flaw, it's yet another aspect to the heroine we are to secretly admire.

Haydon, Elizabeth. Elegy for a lost star.
HAYDON, Elizabeth. Elegy elegy, in Greek and Roman poetry, a poem written in elegiac verse (i.e., couplets consisting of a hexameter line followed by a pentameter line). The form dates back to 7th cent. B.C. in Greece and poets such as Archilochus, Mimnermus, and Tytraeus. Later taken up and developed in Roman poetry, it was widely used by Catullus, Ovid, and other Latin poets. In English poetry, since the 16th cent. for a lost star. (Book 5 of the Symphony of Ages.) Tor. 427p. map. c2004. 0-812-54192-8. $7.99. SA
Not a work that stands well on its own, this continues the stories started in the previous novels. Rhapsody and her half-dragon husband are expecting their baby, and she goes to visit her mother-in-law to await the birth; Gwydion assumes the throne left vacant by the slaughter of his father. There are rumblings of trouble: Achmed is trying to rebuild his Lightcatcher in the land of Bolg, and the evil mage Talquist has used the Scales in the Place of Weighing to transform Living Stone into an abomination. It is extremely hard to figure out all the players and their roles without having read the previous volumes. This should be popular, though, where the series has a following.
