Excerpt:
Rhapsody
A review by Victoria Strauss
Advertisement Rhapsody is a former prostitute turned Singer, practitioner of a musical magic that manipulates reality by use of the true names of things. Fleeing from an irate former client, Rhapsody begs protection from a pair of strangers she encounters in an alley. In the process, accidentally, she calls upon her Naming ability, and re-Names one of them. The re-Named man once known as the Brother, now called Achmed is a professional assassin on the run from the demon who enslaved him. Rhapsody's inadvertent use of her craft, it turns out, has done more than just change his name: it has altered his essential nature, thereby breaking the demon's hold. Knowing the demon will never rest until it has found its former slave, Achmed and his companion a giant, green-skinned ex-Sergeant named Grunthor decide to seek refuge in a place of power greater than the demon's: within the root system of Sagia, the sacred white oak that stands in the forest where time began, and is tied to all things that grow. Because of Rhapsody's magical strength, and also because they aren't certain they won't need her to change Achmed's name back again, Achmed and Grunthor kidnap her, and take her with them underground.

Search Authors Search Books About Elizabeth Haydon Elizabeth Haydon first began writing in the fourth grade. Writing a play was one option in a history assignment so, along with a couple of friends, she put on a play she had written which was called The Clue in the Diary. Writing fiction became a dream at that point. She took courses in college, but didn't believe she would be able to make a living from it. She had read C S Lewis as a young child, J R R Tolkien as an older one, and some fantasy in college, but had lost touch with the field after that. She was working in educational publishing in 1994 when she met up with an editorial friend and mentor in New Orleans at the American Library Association conference. He asked her to write for him a fantasy that might cross over to other genres and contain some of their shared mutual interests: medieval music, history, anthropology, and herbalism among others. Since they had been drinking Dixie Blackened Voodoos, she was initially hesitant to take on the project, worried that he might have been a bit tipsy when he suggested it. But when it became clear he really wanted her to do it

Elizabeth Haydon
Rhapsody: Child of Blood I read this series ( Rhapsody is book one) several years ago, and remembered enjoying it, but never re-read it, primarily because Rhapsody is 656 pages, and the remaining books in the series are just as long or longer. It's one thing to start a 400 page book. It's something else entirely to start a book that will lead to a minimum of 1800 pages of reading. High fantasy is interesting, but it's always forever to read. Rhapsody starts out with Meridion, a Time Editor who is attempting to change the past, to save the world from destruction. Meridion is both viewing and interfering, watching the past, looking for hints, and even moving individuals about in time. Rhapsody is a half-Lirin singer and a namera woman escaping her past. By sheer accident, she runs into two half Bolgmonstrous humanoids who are also escaping their own problems. These two Bolg become her companionsand eventually her friends. I have to admit that although I don't dislike Rhapsody, I like Grunthor and Achmed better. I love how two monsters become my favorite charactershow they became two of the most interesting characters in the story. Although Achmed is cranky and irritable and snidetraits I quite enjoythere is something about Grunthor I especially love. Physically, he's described as a horrible monster that you expect to be dim-witted, but he isn't stupid. He's not as intelligent as Achmed, but he as the knowledge and wits to survive and thrive. In other words, Grunthor and Achmed are my favorite characters, and it's worth re-reading the story just to get to know them again.

Wordsworth upon Helvellyn ! Let the cloud
Ebb audibly along the mountain-wind,
Then break against the rock, and show behind
The lowland valleys floating up to crowd
The sense with beauty. He with forehead bowed
And humble-lidded eyes, as one inclined
Before the sovran thought of his own mind,
And very meek with inspirations proud,
Takes here his rightful place as poet-priest By the high altar, singing prayer and prayer To the higher Heavens.
