Born as Asa Bundy Sheffey , Robert Hayden grew up in Detroit, Michigan . Born to a struggling couple, Ruth and Asa Sheffey (they separated soon after his birth), Hayden was taken in by a foster family, Sue Ellen Westerfield and William Hayden, and grew up in a Detroit ghetto nicknamed " Paradise Valley ." The Haydens' perpetually contentious marriage, coupled with Ruth Sheffey’s competition for young Hayden's affections, made for a traumatic childhood. Witnessing fights and suffering beatings, Hayden lived in a house fraught with 'chronic angers' whose effects would stay with the poet throughout his adulthood. His childhood traumas resulted in debilitating bouts of depression which he later called "my dark nights of the soul".

statistics.com Journal of Statistics Education Volume 13, Number 1 (2005), www.amstat.org/publications/jse/v13n1/datasets.hayden.html Key Words: Data displays; Inliers; Interpretation in context; Presidents.
Abstract
The data illustrate outliers that are not mistakes and not observations that are unusually high or low. The reasons for them are all interesting historically. They illustrate that "outliers" need not be errors but may instead be particularly interesting cases. The data also illustrate that different data displays may differ in their ability to reveal interesting data structure.
1. Introduction
For many years I have been urging my students to scan data for outliers. There are two common definitions of what an outlier is, and I have a strong preference between them. One definition concentrates on outliers that are unusually large or small. Here is an example from Bluman (2000, p. 123) An “outlier” is an extremely high or an extremely low data value when compared with the rest of the data values. Boxplots implement a specific version of this definition. However, this definition does not generalize well beyond a single variable.

"A Plague of Starlings" and "Ice Strom" -Hayden extended the boundaries of subject matter for African American poets. The carees of Rita Dove, Yusef Komunyakka, Carl Phillips, and Elizabeth Alexander are hard to imagine without Hayden's example. By the time of his death in 1980, Hayden had amassed a nearly flawless collection of poems regarded as among the finest by an American of this century.
Unable to sleep, or pray. I stand
by the window looking out
at moonstrick trees a December storm
has bowed with ice.
Maple and mountain ash bend
under its glassy weight,
their cracked branches falling upon
the frozen snow. The trees themselves, as in winters past,
will survive their burdening, broken thrive. And I am less to You, my God, than they?
Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueback cold, then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

ROBERT HAYDEN (Asa Bundy Sheffey) (1913-1980)
Robert Hayden, following a generation after the Harlem Renaissance poets, produced a body of work that came to address two issues. First, can African-American poetry take its form and inspiration from mainstream Modernism? And second, should it? Hayden’s poetry gave a resounding yes to both questions, though not without resistance. He ultimately came to be known as one of the most skilled craftsmen in American poetry, and one of most important poetic chroniclers of African-American history and culture. Hayden was a member of the Baha’i faith, which teaches that humanity is one single race, and that all previous religions have laid the groundwork for the dramatic change to come, that of the unification of all races and nationalities in one global society. This, in addition to his attitude toward the craft of poetry, led him to insist that he was first and foremost a poet, not a black poet. The conflict between this nonracialism on the one hand, and the racial themes of so much of his poetry—he wrote in his Collected Prose that “to be a poet… is to care passionately about justice and one's fellow human beings” (11)—led to a creative tension which is a great part of his work’s power. His first poetry collection

    http://www.geekcode.com/
    Welcome to: THE GEEK CODE
THE STATUS OF THE GEEK CODE: The Geek Code is basicly a (small) part of Internet history. When I did the first incarnation of the code back in '93, it was as a lark. Eventually, it evolved into the form you see online now and has remained virtually unchanged since that time. I've always meant to, and still hope to, someday get back to the code and release a new version for the new century that was more modern and hip and all that. Several things happened. First, the internet of 1996 was still a wild untamed virgin paradise of geeks and eggheads unpopulated by script kiddies, and the denizens of AOL. When things changed, I seriously lost my way. I mean, all the "geek" that was the Internet was gone and replaced by Xfiles buzzwords and politicians passing laws about a technology they refused to comprehend. Think about it, this was the infancy of even the world wide web, when having a "DotCom" address wasn't hip (and wasn't a billion-dollar snowjob by the ICANN). Still, I always said to myself "Self, some day you'll get over it and write the new code."

Robert Hayden's Epic of Community - African American poet
MELUS Fall, 1998 by Benjamin Friedlander As early as 1941 Robert Hayden prepared himself for the task of writing a "black-skinned epic," an ambition he formed after reading Stephen Vincent Benet's long Civil War poem, John Brown's Body. Interviewed in 1972, Hayden spoke of this ambition in the following manner: I've always been interested in Afro-American history, and when I was a young poet, since I knew that our history had been misrepresented, I wanted to contribute toward an understanding of what our past had really been like. I set out to correct the misconceptions and to destroy some of the stereotypes and cliches which surrounded Negro history. (Collected Prose 162)
