by Meloneese Fain The Consequences of Puritan Depravity and Distrust as Historical Context for Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" by Michael E. McCabe Puritan doctrine taught that all men are totally depraved and require constant self-examination to see that they are sinners and unworthy of God's Grace. Because man had broken the Covenant of Works when Adam had eaten from the Tree of Knowledge, God offered a new covenant to Abraham's people which held that election to Heaven was merely a possibility. In the Puritan religion, believers dutifully recognized the negative aspects of their humanity rather than the gifts they possessed. This shadow of distrust would have a direct influence on early American New England and on many of its historians and writers, one of which was Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Hester Pryne who has born the daughter of an unnamed father and must wear the scarlet "A" of Adultress on her bossom; Arthur Dimmesdale, a Puritan divine later revealed to be the father of the child; Roger Chillingworth, an elderly physician with whom Hester had contracted a loveless marriage several years before; and Pearl, the child, a beautiful and willful child, untouched by the moral dilemmas that torment the other characters. The lover's deed had "a consecration of its own" whereas Chillingworth had 'violated in cold blood the sanctity of a human heart." This novel was the first U.S. work to rank among "classics of world literature."

Rappaccini's Daughter, Young Goodman Brown, Peter Goldthwaite's Treasure, and The Artist of the Beautiful, on the one side, are the promise which is fulfilled in The Scarlet Letter and the House of The Seven Gables, on the other; though we should hardly have understood the promise had not the fulfillment explained it. The shorter pieces have a lyrical quality, but the longer romances express more than a mere combination of lyrics; they have a rich, multifarious life of their own. The material is so wrought as to become incidental to something loftier and greater, for which our previous analysis of the contents of the egg had not prepared us. The Scarlet Letter was the first, and the tendency of criticism is to pronounce it the most impressive, also, of these ampler productions. It has the charm of unconsciousness; the author did not realize while he worked, that this "most prolix among tales" was alive with the miraculous vitality of genius. It combines the strength and substance of an oak with the subtle organization of a rose, and is great, not of malice aforethought, but inevitably. It goes to the root of the matter, and reaches some unconventional conclusions, which, however, would scarce be apprehended by one reader in twenty. For the external or literal significance of the story, though in strict correspondence with the spirit, conceals that spirit from the literal eye. The reader may choose his depth according to his inches but only a tall man will touch the bottom.

Executive summary: The House of the Seven Gables William Howe , which scow the bold Hathorne and his valiant crew at once engaged and fought for over an hour, until the vanquished enemy was glad to cut the Yankee grapplings and quickly bear away. The last of the Hathornes with whom we are concerned was a son of this sturdy old privateer, Nathaniel Hathorne. He was born in 1776, and about the beginning of the 19th century married Miss Elizabeth Clarke Manning, a daughter of Richard Manning of Salem, whose ancestors emigrated to America about fifty years after the arrival of William Hathorne. Young Nathaniel took his hereditary place before the mast, passed from the forecastle to the cabin, made voyages to the East and West Indies, Brazil and Africa, and finally died of fever at Surinam, in the spring of 1808. He was the father of three children, the second of whom was the subject of this article. The form of the family name was changed by the latter to "Hawthorne" in his early manhood. After the death of her husband Mrs. Hawthorne removed to the house of her father with her little family of children. Of the boyhood of Nathaniel no particulars have reached us, except that he was fond of taking long walks alone, and that he used to declare to his mother that he would go to sea sometime and would never return. Among the books that he is known to have read as a child were

    Biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne
NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE was born at Salem, Massachusetts, July 4, 1804, and he died at Plymouth, New Hampshire, May 19, 1864.
In 1821 he entered Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, where he graduated three years later. He distinguished himself in the classics, especially in Latin. His translations from the Roman poets were excellent, and he wrote several creditable English poems. In college he became acquainted with Henry W. Longfellow, and Franklin Pierce, afterward president of the United States. The college friendship, formed by the three young friends, held them together for life. Longfellow was among the first to point out the beauty of Hawthorne's style, and Pierce gave him a public office.
Removing his home to Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts, he wrote "The House of the Seven Gables," and "The Wonder-Book" in 1851. Changing his home again to West Newton, near Boston, he produced "The Blithedale Romance," "The Snow Image and other Twice-Told Tales," in 1852. Again taking up his home in Concord, he wrote a "Life of Franklin Pierce," his college friend, in 1852; and "Tanglewood Tales" in 1853. A reference to history shows that Pierce was the Democratic candidate for the presidency at the time Hawthorne became his biographer. Our author undertook the work upon the positive assurance that he would not accept an appointment under his friend if he were successful, lest it might compromise him. President Pierce, however, offered Hawthorne the-consulate at Liverpool, one of the best gifts at the president's disposal, and our author's friends finally prevailed upon him to accept.

The year was 1925 and the civic minded folk of Salem in the process of building a modern hotel for their fair city had a bit of a problem. The problem wasn't money or location. More than eighty per cent of the estimated $750,000 to build the hotel had been raised by a cadre of volunteer stock salesman. And the Salem Marine Society had graciously agreed to sell its Franklin Building adjacent to the Salem Common and let it be bulldozed to make way for the new lodging house. Nor was there a problem with the building itself. The new hotel had been beautifully designed by Smith and Walker of Boston with significant input from highly-respected local architect Philip Horton Smith. Construction was well underway and proceeding smoothly. The problem was a name. The city's highly touted "modern hotel for Salem" was nearing completion and no one was quite sure what it would be called. The dilemma was eventually resolved by Judge Alden C. White. White was the president of the Hawthorne Memorial Association, an organization responsible for raising the funds to buy Bela Pratt's statue of Nathaniel Hawthorne and moving it to its present location on Hawthorne Boulevard. Why not, White asked

    Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804- May 19, 1864) was a 19th century American novelist and short story writer. He is seen as a key figure in the development of American literature. Nathaniel Hawthorne was a famous author who was born in Salem, Massachusetts, where his birthplace is now a house museum, and died in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Hawthorne's father was a sea captain and descendant of John Hathorne, one of the judges who oversaw the Salem Witch Trials. (The author added the "w" to his surname in his early twenties.) Hawthorne's father died at sea in 1808 of yellow fever when Hawthorne was only four years old, and Nathaniel was raised secluded from the world by his mother. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College in Maine from 1821–1824, befriending classmates Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and future president Franklin Pierce. Until the publication of his
