Hauptmann was born in Obersalzbrunn , a small city of Silesia , now known as Szczawno-Zdr³j and a part of Poland He was the son of a Prussian hotel-keeper. From the village school of his native place he passed to the Realschule in Breslau , and was then sent to learn agriculture on his uncle's farm at Jauer . Having, however, no taste for country life, he soon returned to Breslau and entered the art school, intending to become a sculptor. Here he met his life-long friend Josef Block . He then studied at Jena , and spent the greater part of the years 1883 and 1884 in Italy. In May 1885 Hauptmann married and settled in Berlin , and, devoting himself henceforth entirely to literary work, soon attained a great reputation as one of the chief representatives of the modern drama.

Gerhart (Johann Robert) Hauptmann (1862-1946) Prominent German dramatist of the early 20th century. Hauptmann won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912. After failing at the gymnasium in Breslau, Gerhart was sent to his uncle's estate. There he became aware of Pietism and learned to know the peasants with whom he worked. Already as a child Hauptmann had started to draw, and he entered the art academy in Breslau, intending to become a sculptor. At the age of twenty he moved to Jena, where he studied history at the university. In Berlin Hauptmann came in contact with progressive intellectuals, among them the poet and dramatist Arno Holz (1863-1929), whose play

GERHART HAUPTMANN
Born, Obersalsbrunn, Silesia, 1862
Died, Agnetendorf, Germany, 1946
This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama
GERHART HAUPTMANN'S first play, BEFORE SUNRISE , was produced in 1889 at the German Free Theater, and was acknowledged as the beginning of an important new literary movement for Germany just as Strindberg 's MASTER OLAF had been recognized as the beginning of Swedish literary independence. Hauptmann's dramatic genius is incontestable, but he has never seemed able to settle on any one form as best suited to express his dramatic intentions. THE WEAVERS , for example, a play that caused considerable stir on its presentation in 1892, is most unusual in that it is concerned with a whole community and has neither hero nor heroine. THE SUNKEN BELL , on the other hand, is centered around one man's struggle for expression. In MICHAEL KRAMER it is two men who hold the center of interest. Gerhart Hauptmann's father was a Silesian innkeeper and the boy was originally intended for a farmer. His instincts, however, were artistic rather than agricultural. After two years of study in a school of art, a year of more general education at the University of Jena, and considerable continental travel, he settled down in Rome as a sculptor. Regard for health soon brought him back to the more bracing climate of Germany, and there, after some hesitation, he gave up art for a literary career. At the time Hauptmann's BEFORE SUNRISE appeared, cultivated Germans had apparently forgotten the greatness of Germany's own

Autobiography
I attended the village school, learned some Latin from a tutor, and had violin lessons. Later I went to Breslau, the capital of our province, where I lived in boardinghouses and attended a Gymnasium. Fortunately, my Breslau school period did not crush me, but it left scars from which I only slowly recovered. I should have perished if there had not been a way out. I went to the country and began to study agriculture. The tortures of school, begun in 1874, ended in 1878. But agriculture remained an episode. Once in solitude I reamed to stand on my own feet and have my own thoughts. I grew conscious of myself, my value, and my rights. In this way I gained independence, firmness, and a freedom of intellect that I still enjoy today. Hungry for culture, I resumed to Breslau where I spent a second, happier period. I attended the art academy, did sculpturing, learned what youth, hope, and beauty are, the value of friends, masters, and teachers. I drew, sculptured, drank, wrote poems, made plans, and built castles in Spain. In this mood I exchanged the art academy of Breslau for the University of Jena in Thuringia. In this mood I exchanged Jena for Rome, and later Rome for Berlin.

Gerhart Hauptmann German writer in full Gerhart Johann Robert Hauptmann
Main
born Nov. 15, 1862, Bad Salzbrunn, Silesia, Prussia [Germany] German playwright, poet, and novelist who was a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912. Fasching and Ivan Turgenev led him to start writing plays. Vor Sonnenaufgang Before Dawn ) made him famous overnight, though it shocked the theatregoing public. This starkly realistic tragedy, dealing with contemporary social problems, signaled the end of the rhetorical and highly stylized German drama of the 19th century. Encouraged by the controversy, Hauptmann wrote in rapid succession a number of outstanding dramas on naturalistic themes (heredity, the plight of the poor, the clash of personal needs with societal restrictions) in which he artistically reproduced social reality and common speech. Most gripping and humane, as well as most objectionable to the political authorities at the time of its publication, is Die Weber The Weavers Das Friedensfest Einsame Menschen Lonely Lives ) describes the tragic end of an unhappy intellectual torn between his wife and a young woman (patterned after the writer ) with whom he can share his thoughts.
