http://www.diacenter.org/prg/poetry/95_96/intrhass.html
Introduction by Brighde Mullins "A man choosing the words he lives by" is James Merrill's description of a poet and it is a fitting description of Robert Hass, whose words are active and suggest not only a way of composing but also a way of experiencing reality. His three books of poems open zones of contemplation and revelation. The grand scale of his native Northern California is made visible through his precise and highly musical sensibility, as he capitulates to the rhythm of pure relationships, of description, of naming, of saying. Walking, I recite the hard explosive names of birds: egret, killdeer, bittern, tern. Dull in the wind and early morning light the striped shadows of the cattails twitch like nerves. This act of recitation is an act of submission to the world, to its intrinsic wonders, terrible and beautiful, naming, as Yeats says as a mother names her child it is that tender agility that yields such pleasure in Hass' first book, FIELD GUIDE. "If you're going to write you better have somewhere to come from," Flannery O'Connor has said, and Hass does homage to his home in passages like this: In California in the early Spring There are pale yellow mornings, when the mist burns slowly into day The air stings like Autumn clarifies like pain Well, I have dreamed this coast myself.

Robert Hass: Imagination and the Image
Robert Hass has been named the recipient of the 2007 National Book Award in Poetry for his collection, Time and Materials , published by Ecco/HarperCollins. His previous books of poetry include Sun Under Wood: New Poems Human Wishes Praise (1979), and Field Guide (1973), which was selected by Stanley Kunitz for the Yale Younger Poets Series.
He has also co-translated several volumes of poetry with Czeslaw Milosz, such as Facing the River (1995), and is author or editor of several other collections of essays and translation, including The Essential Haiku: Versions of Basho, Buson, and Issa (1994), and Twentieth Century Pleasures: Prose on Poetry
Robert Hass served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 1995 to 1997 and is currently a Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets. He also has won two National Book Critics Circle awards. Hass teaches at the University of California, Berkeley.
Twentieth Century Pleasures: Prose on Poetry , Hass offers the following observation:
It seems to me that we all live our lives in the light of primary acts of imagination, images or sets of images that get us up in the morning and move us about our days. I do not think anybody can live without one, for very long, without suffering intensely from deadness and futility. And I think that, for most of us, those images are not only essential but dangerous because no one of them feels like the whole truth and they do not last. Either they die of themselves, dry up, are shed; or, if we are lucky, they are invisibly transformed into the next needful thing; or we act on them in a way that exposes both them and us.

  • Robert Hass 1941–
    American poet, translator, and critic.
    INTRODUCTION
A respected critic and translator of works by Czeslaw Milosz and Japan's masters of haiku, Hass is also a renowned poet in his own right, and has garnered recognition for the breadth of his facility with poetic forms. Rich in allusion and abounding in nature imagery, Hass's poems often appear as discursive meditations illuminated by a richness of sensory experience and human feeling. Although his frequent references to books, music, paintings, films, and prominent figures of the belles-lettres have caused Hass to be labeled an "intellectual" writer, many critics counter what might be seen as a fault by pointing to his agility in his craft. Accordingly, most observe that his conversational style and use of traditional poetic images in a refreshing manner combine to make his verse highly accessible to readers. His essays are, likewise, personal and thoughtful, and provide engaging insights for readers of haiku, Milosz, and Hass's literary contemporaries.
    Biographical Information
A native of California, Hass has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for most of his life, graduating from St. Mary's College and Stanford University, the latter of which is also the source of his master's and doctorate degrees. He studied briefly with Yvor Winters, a proponent of New Criticism and a noted champion of the moral value of poetry. Hass has been influenced by Kenneth Rexroth and the "San Francisco Renaissance" of American poetry that originated with the Beat movement, and his work is often compared with that of Gary Snyder and John Ashbery. "I think very much the influence for me in poetry is poetry," Hass said in a 1981 interview. "Specifically Wordsworth and Pound and through them Snyder and Whitman and others…. I guess there is not one model. What I seem to return to most is Pound in the late

    http://www.jud.ct.gov/SGC/decisions/040319.htm
STATEWIDE GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE Bruce Hass, Complainant vs. Robert A. Heghmann, Respondent Grievance Complaint #04-0319 DECISION Pursuant to Practice Book §2-35, the undersigned, duly-appointed reviewing committee of the Statewide Grievance Committee, conducted a hearing at the Superior Court, One Court Street, Middletown, Connecticut on March 10, 2005. The hearing addressed the record of the complaint filed on April 5, 2004, and the probable cause determination filed by the Stamford/Norwalk Judicial District Grievance Panel on August 10, 2004, finding that there existed probable cause that the Respondent violated Rules 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.16(d) and 8.4(4) of the Rules of Professional Conduct. Notice of the hearing was mailed to the Complainant, to the Respondent and to the Office of the Chief Disciplinary Counsel on January 21, 2005.  The Respondent did not appear at the hearing.  The Complainant appeared and testified.  Pursuant to Practice Book §2-35(d), Chief Disciplinary Counsel Mark A. Dubois pursued the matter before this reviewing committee. The reviewing committee also heard the testimony of Gary Hass. This reviewing committee finds the following facts by clear and convincing evidence: In October of 1999, the Complainant and his brother Gary Hass retained the Respondent to represent them in connection with a probate dispute involving their other brother, David Hass. The Respondent was paid advance legal fees of $10,000 on October 27, 1999. The Respondent was also paid $6400 for legal fees on December 30, 1999.  The Respondent met with the Complainant approximately three times and spoke with the Complainant several times on the telephone.  The Respondent attended three probate hearings in 1999.  The last communication that the Complainant had with the Respondent was in or around 2002 or 2003, when the Respondent assured the Complainant that he was going to commence work on the Complainant’s probate matter.  Thereafter, the Respondent did not return the Complainant’s telephone calls.  The Respondent relocated  and changed his telephone number without notifying the Complainant.

Hardcover. 0300016506. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1973. First Edition. 73 pp. A Review copy, with slip laid in of the author's first Book. Volume 68 of the Yale Younger Poets Series; chosen by Stanley Kunitz. As fine a copy as one can imagine, with virtually no wear to cloth or dust jacket, and seemingly unread. The paper edges toned, faint soiling to the back panel, still fine/fine. The hardcover issue is scarce, especially so as a review copy. Hass was Poet Laureate from 1995 to 1997. Hass has won the National Book Critics Circle Award twice, once for poetry, once for criticism; one of our finest poets, he has also been the primary translator of Czeslaw Milosz..
