by Janice Albert The year 2002 marked the one-hundredth anniversary of the death of Bret Harte, Argonaut and author. Wherever you live in California, there is probably a Bret Harte elementary, middle or high school near you. Who was Harte and what is his contribution to the life and literature of California? Although his collected work runs to many volumes, Harte's reputation is built on a handful of stories and a poem that he wrote while living in San Francisco during the years of the Gold Rush. "Tennessee's Partner," "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," "M'Liss," and "The Luck of Roaring Camp" are some of the titles that brought him international fame and caused readers to call him "the young Dickens." Bret Harte's characters in bronze, Bohemian Club, Post Street side
In these stories, Harte created a set of characters that live in the American imagination even now-the ruffian who gently helps a tiny child, the gun totin' preacher, the judge who administers justice by the seat of his pants-all these types that we know so intimately from countless TV shows and Westerns have their origin in Harte's stories of the Forty Niners. Through his poem "Plain Language from Truthful James," Harte created a wily Chinaman who outwits his Anglo gambling opponents. These materials brought out his flair for constructing dialect and description. His own mining experiences were slender and unsuccessful, but he was on friendly terms with others, such as

    Bret Harte
Francis Bret Harte was born in Albany, New York on August 25, 1839. His father, Henry Hart, was the son of an immigrant who had moved to America and became rich. However, Bernard left his family in order to marry again. Bret's mother, Elizabeth Rebecca Ostrander Hart, was from the English and Dutch culture and raised her child in a Dutch Reformed church. By the age of eleven, Bret had published a number of poems. In 1854 Harte went to California with his mother, a widow. While in California, Harte worked as a miner, a school teacher, an express messenger, a printer, and finally, a journalist. Harte wrote for The Northern Californian . At the beginning of 1859, Harte lost the job after he used the paper to denounce the townspeople who had massacred a tribe of peaceful Native Americans that were holding a religious festival near Eureka. In 1864 Harte was appointed to the branch mint at San Francisco. He held that office for four year, when he was invited to become the editor of the Overland Monthly . Harte met Mark Twain during this time: the later claimed Harte taught him how to write. Harte used ubiquitous newspapers to break into the literary market.

    From LoveToKnow 1911
FRANCIS BRET HARTE (1839-1902), American author, was born at Albany New York , on the 25th of August 1839. His father, a professor of Greek at the Albany College, died during his boyhood. After a common-school education he went with his mother to California at the age of seventeen, afterwards working in that state as a teacher, miner, printer, expressmessenger, secretary of the San Francisco mint , and editor. His first literary venture was a series of Condensed Novels (travesties of well-known works of fiction, somewhat in the style of Thackeray), published weekly in The Californian, of which he was editor, and reissued in book form in 1867. The Overland Monthly, the earliest considerable literary magazine on the Pacific coast, was established in 1868, with Harte as editor. His sketches and poems, which appeared in its pages during the next few years, attracted wide attention in the eastern states and in Europe Bret Harte was an early master of the short story, and his Californian tales were regarded as introducing a new genre into fiction. Francis Bret Harte Tennessee's Partner The Gentleman of La Porte The Idyll of Red Gulch The Outcasts of Poker Flat Introduction
American humorist, b. in Albany, N.Y., but when still a boy went to California. He had a somewhat varied career as a teacher, miner, and journalist, and it is as a realistic chronicler of the gold-field and an original humorist that his chief literary triumphs were achieved. Among his best known writings are Condensed Novels , in which he showed great skill as a parodist, The Luck of Roaring Camp. The Idyll of Red Gulch , and The Heathen Chinee . In 1880 he came to Glasgow as U.S. Consul, and from 1885 he lived in London. His writings often show the tenderness and fine feeling that are allied to the higher forms of humour, and he may be said to have created a special form of short story in his Californian tales and prose idylls. It was a warm night. The cool breeze which usually sprang up with the going down of the sun behind the chaparral He paused a moment, but nobody volunteering any other meteorological recollection, he again had recourse to his pocket-handkerchief, and for some moments mopped his face diligently. him , and you fetches him How he met it, how cool he was, how he refused to say anything, how perfect were the arrangements of the committee, were all duly reported, with the addition of a warning moral and example to all future evil-doers, in the Red Dog Clarion , by its editor, who was present, and to whose vigorous English I cheerfully refer the reader. But the beauty of that midsummer morning, the blessed amity of earth and air and sky, the awakened life of the free woods and hills, the joyous renewal and promise of Nature, and above all, the infinite serenity that thrilled through each, were not reported, as not being a part of the social lesson. And yet, when the weak and foolish deed was done, and a life, with its possibilities and responsibilities, had passed out of the misshapen thing that dangled between earth and sky, the birds sang, the flowers bloomed, the sun shone, as cheerily as before; and possibly the Red Dog Clarion was right.
