New York Radio Personality Harry Harrison Remembers... Harry Harrison was the morning air personality at WABC from 1968 until 1979. His on air style made him an institution in New York radio. On WABC he was able to balance the young sound of Top 40 radio with adult charisma that was so vital to mass appeal radio stations of this era. This "mix" was the only way to reach both the kids and their parents in the morning. Both demographics were vital to the ratings success of WABC and Harry was incredibly good at appealing to everyone. He still is every morning on New York's WCBS-FM. Harry personally contributed the information and memorabilia for this section to the WABC website. He sent a box full of airchecks, pictures, bios, and memories from his career. He obviously took a great deal of time and care collecting and organizing this incredible collection. Only some of it is posted. More will be added later. Thanks Harry!!! Harry Harrison's Radio Biography Harry Harrison started in radio at the age of 14 while living in his hometown of Chicago, IL. He suffered a bout of rheumatic fever and was in bed for a year. As a result, radio became his best friend. After his recovery he approached WJJD in Chicago for a job. They put him in contact with the educational station in Chicago, WBEZ. Incredibly, he moved to Chicago's WCFL as a summer replacement and stayed for eight months! Harry next moved to WPEO in Peoria IL as its program director. There, he hosted a top rated morning show as the "Morning Mayor of Peoria" and even performed in local television! He made WPEO the top station in six months. As Harry became well known in the Midwest with his rapid success, New York City's WMCA came calling.

Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat grew out of the late fifties' penchant for tales of superspies (James Bond) or rakish rascals with a criminal bent (the Saint). Slippery Jim diGriz was very much the Bond/Saint characters writ large, with a backdrop of galaxy-wide human colonisation of Outer Space. Leavened with a large dollop or two of sly and wicked humour, the Stainless Steel Rat went from master criminal to inter-Galactic cop, and switched back and forward between the two in all his subsequent adventures. These three reprints cover four decades, since the first, The Stainless Steel Rat , started life as short stories in 1957 before becoming the fix-up novel reprinted here in 1961. Despite its age, the story still holds up well, apart from the unfortunate inclusion of references to 'punch card computers', a slight hiccup in Harrison's future extrapolations. The first volume details Slippery Jim's capture by the Special Corps after a spectacular life of crime, his induction into their ranks and his first case. This brings him into contact with the beautiful but deadly Angeline, a criminal after his own heart in all ways but one she doesn't draw the line at murder in the way diGriz does. But diGriz still finds her devilishly attractive.

Interviewed by Noni Durrani 10.15.07, 6:00 PM ET
What's one thing you were sure would happen, but didn't? Overpopulation in Europe and the U.S.A., as predicted in my book Make Room! Make Room! and the film Soylent Green . They ended up with zero population growth. But in reality, Africa is suffering greatly because of population growth. What's something that totally surprised you? AIDS. There's no way to predict the onslaught of a new disease. Harry Harrison is an author best known for his books The Stainless Steel Rat and Make Room! Make Room! (on which the film Soylent Green was loosely based). More recent works include the best-selling trilogies West of Eden and Stars and Stripes Forever.

The Stainless Steel Rat Turns Fifty: A Review of Harry Harrison's 50 In 50
        Reviewed by John Teehan
17 February 2003 I always was, still am, enthusiastic about science fiction. It is a limitless field of endeavor which writers can explore, go wherever their imaginations lead them. If I am depressed about the present state of the art it is because the present crop of writers seem to have small imaginations, easy goals, tiny ambitions. The dwarves have replaced the giants. Or am I just being grumpy? Harry Harrison, www.harryharrison.com Fifty stories is a lot of fiction to pack between two covers. In 50 In 50 Harry Harrison has collected together some of his best short stories in fifty years of writing. From his first professionally sold story, "Rock Diver" ( Worlds Beyond #3, February 1951) to "The Road To the Year 3000" ( New Scientist, 16th December 1999) we get a remarkable variety of work spreading over five decades. The collection begins with ten pages of autobiographical introduction detailing Harrison's career as an artist, writer, and editor, along with some interesting anecdotes. At first glance, one might assume that the collection will feature one story from each year of Harrison's career. Not so. As prolific as he is, there were a few years here and there that saw no new short stories in publication and many years in which there were several. Harrison has also written such classic science fiction novels as The Stainless Steel Rat To The Stars

Harry Harrison - The Stainless Steel Rat Goes to Hell
When I was about ten, I was given a copy of a collection of Science Fiction stories, that I still have today. The book can be credited with a lifelong love of that particular genre. Amongst the many stories in it, was one that wasn't a complete story, but actually turned out to be the first chapter of Harry Harrison's novel, The Stainless Steel Rat.
From the moment I read it, I was hooked on the idea of the underground criminal, the last of his kind, living beneath the surface of the dull utopian future society. I loved his warped justification for his actions, his quirky sense of humour, the funny little sayings, and the amusing philosophy:
"At a certain stage the realisation striked through that one must either live outside of society's bonds or die of absolute boredom... There is no longer room fro the soldier of fortune or the gentleman adventurer who can live both within and outside of society. Today it is all or nothing. To save my own sanity I chose the nothing."
So when I discovered that not only was the story I had just a first chapter, but part of a series of novels, my ten year old heart nearly popped in excitement. Since then, I have followed the Rat's adventures on both sides of the law. Read and re-read his fixing of elections and his travels in time. I've often smiled to myself at the gratuitous use of invention to save the day, and the fact that no matter how many bullets are sprayed around in an armed robbery, nobody ever seems to get hit.

In spite of his age and background, he completed his training in time to participate in the D-Day assault.
