In Memoriam: Harry Clinton Harrison, CHP
by John C. Taschner, CHP Harry Clinton Harrison, CHP, a resident of Lady Lake, Florida, since 1995, died on 16 November 2007 at the age of 77.
Harry was born in Great Bend, Kansas, on 13 September 1930. He received his BS degree in math and physics from Texas Western College in 1958 and did graduate studies in radiation biophysics at the University of Kansas in 1958-1959.
Harry’s career in health physics began at the U.S. Army Nuclear Effects Laboratory, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, where he served from 1964 to 1978 as a supervisory health physicist. There he provided health physics support for a Godiva reactor, a 46-MeV linear electron accelerator, and four 14-MeV neutron generators. He established and taught health physics technician courses and trained reactor operators and laboratory technicians in basic radiation protection and radiological contamination control.
In 1978 Harry joined the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), serving for two years as a radiation specialist at the NRC’s Region IV in Arlington, Texas. He also performed independent effluent and environmental monitoring surveys in and around NRC-licensed facilities to verify the acceptability of the licensee’s radiation controls.
From 1980 to 1994 Harry served as a health physicist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Preparedness, Training and Exercise Division in Denton, Texas, where he established and maintained a five-state regional Comprehensive Cooperative Agreement Program for radiological defense (RADEF) from nuclear attack. The RADEF program consisted of a planning effort for population protection in the event of a nuclear attack and provided training in the calibration and use of radiation survey instruments. Harry also served as the lead health physics evaluator for field monitoring activities, dose assessment, and mobile laboratory analytical procedures during nuclear power plant exercises.

Harry Harrison wrote a great novel last year entitled THE HAMMER AND THE CROSS. At least that was what the publicity blurb claimed. Now I've no gripe with the great novel bit, but what none of the publicity material mentioned was that a gentleman called John Holm was credited on the cover as co-author. the sequel has now arrived. It's called ONE KING'S WAY and there's only one name on the cover, that of Harry Harrison.
But, and it's a mighty big but, the title page inside the book credits authorship to Harry Harrison and (the ever self-effacing) John Holm. So, clear this up for me if you would please Legend: is John Holm co-author of the book or not? If he is, why does his name not appear on the cover? why has he allowed Harry Harrison to claim authorship? If he is not co-author then surely an acknowledgement for his help (whatever it may have been) would be more appropriate.
Anyway, back to the matter of the novel itself. As sequels go this is way, way above the average. In many ways it is better than the original as it is able to assume the background that was so painstakingly set up in the first in the series. so what we get this time is action all the way.

Promoting Harry Harrison Leon Stover. Harry Harrison Boston: Twayne, 1990. viii+141. $18.95. Extrapolation , a 1985 essay by Brian Aldiss, five essays on Harrison works in the 1979 Salem Press Survey, a 1988 Norman Spinrad essay in Asimov's (which in fairness may have been too recent for Stover to include), an entry in The Dictionary of Literary Biography , 19 references in Brian Ash's Visual Encyclopedia of Science Fiction , and brief discussions of specific works in books by Paul Carter, Sam Lundwall, and myself. Harrison may not have achieved the recognition he deserves, but he hasn't been completely ignored, either. I mention Stover's comment about previous criticism because it represents the kind of global generalization one has to watch out for in what is in most ways a very informative and provocative bookone that is often as interesting for what it tells us of Stover's view of SF as for what it tells us about Harrison's fiction. Stover is an anthropologist who collaborated with Harrison on an anthology of anthropological SF in 1968 (as well as on a novel about Stonehenge), and he makes it clear from the outset that his interest lies primarily with the scientific and social undergirding of Harrison's work rather than with its style, structure, or relation to other literature. Not surprisingly, he praises Captive Universe , with its ingeniously worked-out anthropological solution to the problem of social stability on a generation starship, as Harrison's masterpiece. But while he acknowledges the importance of Heinlein's "Universe" in setting up this problem for later SF writers, he mentions no other treatments of this theme to support his claim that Harrison has been able to do what no other author had.
