A Man in Full

Review by TROY PATTERSON Published: June 11, 2006 Over the past 15 years, E. Lynn Harris has journeyed from humble beginnings — self-publishing his first novel and hustling it himself at beauty shops and sorority houses — to become one of the most popular black male novelists in America. A gay author addressing gay themes, Harris has helped bring taboo topics — like closeted black men indulging their sexuality "on the down low" — into mainstream conversation. Profiled in Entertainment Weekly, he described his readership as "a little bit of everything. It's probably 60 percent African-American women, 20 percent gay and 20 percent other." What happens when a novelist becomes so aware of his audience? Is there a price to pay for such success? Skip to next paragraph

Harris, E. Lynn. I say a little prayer, a novel.
HARRIS, E. Lynn. I say a little prayer, a novel. Read by Mirron Willis. 6 cds. 7 hrs. Books on Tape. 2006. 1-4159-0757-9. $57.60. Vinyl; plot notes. SA African American bisexual Chauncey Greer is the owner of a successful greeting card business and is ready to take up a once-abandoned musical career. He has found a church that seems to quietly accept gay and lesbian members. As a member of the choir, Chauncey knows that his considerable talent as a singer will be showcased at an upcoming revival. The problem: the nationally known guest minister and his wife have actively campaigned against gay rights. Chauncey's protests to the acting minister go unheeded. The unfolding drama makes for a fast-paced and entertaining story. The novel is a plea for African American churches to accept gays and lesbians. The minor characters are well crafted and hilarious, especially Chauncey's friend, Skylar. Harris's shots at "Ghetto-Fabulous" culture are a refreshing hoot as well. Willis narrates with enthusiasm and distinction. Harris could be a bit subtler with the product endorsements: in one scene"I pulled out my Bank of America Visa card ..." Still, a great production.
