Joy Harjo and Her Poetics as Praxis: A "Postcolonial" Political Economy of the Body, Land, Labor, and Language
Azfar Hussain
Labor is the substance, and the immanent measure of value, but has itself no value. Karl Marx, Capital For a colonized people the most essential value, because the most concrete, is first and foremost the land: the land which will bring them bread, and above all, dignity. Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth
Introduction: "We Must Say What Reading We Are Guilty Of"
My purpose in this essay is not to offer a comprehensive critical evaluation of the entire oeuvre of the contemporary Native American poet Joy Harjo (1951-). Nor do I pretend to produce coherent knowledges of her world and her work. I would rather argue that her work tends to resist the production of an organically and ontologically coherent episteme that might enable one to know the author's "world-as-a-whole." Indeed, attempts to epistemologize and ontologize the world-as-a-whole have meanwhile had notorious consequences in various Eurocentric discursive-cognitive mappings. For instance, Hegelusually [End Page 27] noted and even celebrated for his encyclopedic range of interrogations and interventionsproduces his "universal history," which only ends up centering Europe while perpetrating epistemic violence on the history and the location of Africaan Africa eventually rendered by him as a massive "blank."

Bill Long 3/10/05 Singing the Cycles of Life The Native American (Muskogee tribe) poet and singer Joy Harjo visited Willamette University tonight. In the space of one hour she worked her way into our hearts with her melodious poems and songs of mythic past and vivid present. She told us how her poems emerged from life experiencefrom the frightening drama of being held up at gunpoint in Los Angeles to the joyous occasion of her granddaughter's 14th birthday. Her reflections on "seeing grace" in Iowa City, when the sun finally peeked through the clouds after a month of winter gloom while she was eating restaurant breakfast of coffee and pancakes were both exhilarating and funny. More than anything, however, Joy Harjo is a woman whose works are characterized by memory , a sense of the connectedness of all things , and an undying hope that often seems to belie the historical experience of Native American people. Memory Joy Harjo memorized her poetry and recited it from the heart. She not only labored over the words in writing but had internalized them, squeezing every ounce of nectar from their sweet and stinging realities.

Quotations "It's important as a writer to do my art well and do it in a way that is powerful and beautiful and meaningful, so that my work regenerates the people, certainly Indian people, and the earth and the sun. And in that way we all continue forever."
Joy Harjo (b. 1951), Native American (Creek) author. As quoted in Listen to Their Voices, ch. 7, by Mickey Pearlman (1993). "Sometimes they are little cats mewing and scratching
at the door, sometimes they are her grandmother's voice,
and sometimes they are gigantic men of light whispering
to her to get up, to get up, to get up."

Certainly it can be safely said that there are areas and areas, and yet even more areas with regard to the Native American that are without qualification, misunderstood, deliberately fabricated, ignorantly being received and ignorantly passed on by others. First, by the initial “discoverers” of Turtle Island and from there to succeeding generations of Euros either trepidatiously stepping forth upon this continent, or remaining home doing whatever Euros did while sucking up those age’s versions of Science Fiction and Fantasy. The true nature and role of the Native American woman , it could be argued, is surely amid the largest of these misconceptions. Now, on the one hand, I can understand if not accept, the ignorance of the non-Native American; however, as I have grown older I have found that in more and more within ensuing generations of Native Americans are coming to less and less knowledge of their own heritage and history.Especially with regard to Honor, Respect, and, quite necessary, Role of the Native American woman within the fabric of Native American societies.

Native American Poet Joy Harjo Enchants the Audience with her Spiritual Works
Jennifer Wright Issue date: Section: Features Media Credit: Las Vegas Clark County Library Native-American Poet and Musician Joy Harjo is one of the featured artists of for Native-American Heritage Month
To a crowd of about 75 people in the cozy Whitney Library Concert Hall Nov. 24, Native American poet and musician Joy Harjo entranced the audience with poems of grief and happiness, womanhood, ancestry and an appreciation of nature.
On a dimly lit stage wearing all black, her thick black mane of hair slightly covering her eyes. Adorned in turquoise jewelry her soft and somber voice kept those in the concert hall hanging on her every word.

About this CD:
What happens when you mix the powerful lyrics of an internationally known poet with her raw smoky singing and top it with jazzy, saucy licks of her alto sax? All of this over a music that defies categorization: itÕs a distinct native sound blended with jazz, rock, even folk and a touch of hip hop soul for spice. You can sing to it, you can dance to it, cry to it, even laugh a little.
Six years in the making, Joy HarjoÕs new cd, Native Joy For Real is finally here! This is her first cd since Letter From the End of the Twentieth Century and is also her first solo cd. All songs are written by Harjo. The cd is co-produced by Harjo and Richard Barron of Sonora Recorders in Los Feliz, California under the label of Mekko Productions. The official release date of the new cd is September 15, 2004.

It has everything to do with the way we live. The land is responsible for the clothes you have on, for my saxophone, for the paper that I write these things on, for our bodies. It's responsible for everything." -Joy Harjo By Stephanie Bauman The Multi-Talented Muskogee Creek Poet T he Muskogee Creek heritage, tribal memories, freedom, love of nature, and survival skills all inspired Joy Harjo to write her unique poetry that "challenges the prevailing boundaries of southwestern writers." Growing up in the Muskogee Creek Tribe, Harjo was born on May 9, 1951 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Alexander Posey, another creek poet, inspired Harjo as she was growing up in Oklahoma. She attended the University of New Mexico for the painting and theatre program, but started writing poetry when the national Indian political climate was seeking vocalists and speakers. Harjo received a BA from The University of New Mexico in 1976, and then was further educated at the University of Iowa and earned a MFA in 1978. Harjo's education experience opened her up to create poetry that symbolizes her Native American heritage.
