Letter "T" Christmas Eve Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock. "Now they are all on their knees," An elder said as we sat in a flock By the embers in herath side ease. We pictured the meek mild creatures where They dwelt in their strawy pen, Nor did it occur to one of us there To doubt they were kneeling then. So fair a fancy few would weave In these years! yet, I feel If someone said on Christmas Eve, "Come; see the oxen kneel, In the lonely barton by yonder coomb Our childhood used to know," I should go with him in the gloom, Hoping it might be so.

Thomas Hardy and West Country Literature Tours
Welcome to this website. We are calling all Thomas Hardy devotees to consider a course on Literature lasting from 2 days to 2 weeks, in which we visit and actually walk the sites linked to his novels, poems, short stories and life. This venture takes us from Cornwall (Emma, Tintagel, St. Juliot and the outburst of love poetry in 1913) to Dorchester (Weatherbury, Marlott, Kingsbere, Mellstock and Bockhampton - the area around Bockhampton is rich in memories of "Tess" and "Far from the Madding Crowd"). My wife and I are offering courses which will involve as many aspects of Thomas Hardy as you wish, and / or other writers as listed below. We are very suitably placed between Cornwall and Dorset for such an adventure. Addenda: This area is rich in literary talent. Other famous writers who are associated with the South West include John Betjeman, Agatha Christie, Charles Kingsley, Daphne du Maurier, Alfred Tennyson, Conan Doyle and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. We can visit sites associated with these writers. Visits of historical interest could include Oxford via Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles, Stratford via Bath and/or Wells, Dartmouth via Totnes and Dartington.

Poured a thick opaque brown with hints of red. Absolutely no head at all, nor any lacing. No carbonation bubbles. It looked pretty much like apple cider. There was a little bit of visual entertainment when a bit of the sediment fell in, but after that, it was pretty tame. Aroma consists mainly of fruit. It's very, very sweet. Almost like a syrup. Notes of cherry, grape, apple, caramel, fig, and plum. Taste is bursting with the flavor that the nose promised. Mouthfeel is pretty thick, with absolutely minimal carbonation. Definitely a sipper. I prefer my beers much more carbonated than this usually, but this one certainly has its place. I look forward to seeing how the other seven I have mature over the years.

Image, Allusion, Voice, Dialect, and Irony in Thomas Hardy's "The Oxen" and the Poem's Original Publication Context
Philip V. Allingham , Contributing Editor, Victorian Web; Faculty of Education, Lakehead University (Canada)
Victorian Web Home Authors Thomas Hardy Works The Athenaeum (January 1918) In Critical Introduction to the Poems of Thomas Hardy (1991), Trevor Johnson rightly reminds readers of Hardy's poetry that an awareness of the contemporary context of "The Oxen"the horrors of trench warfare as conveyed in the British pressdoes much to inform the meaning of this particular "reverie." The date of this poem has to be taken into account: to any soldier in the trenches who happened to read a copy of The Times for 24 December 1915 in which The Oxen first appeared, the picture of the meek, mild creatures in their strawy pen must have been almost unbearably poignant. Though Hardy's only reference to the war is the phrase In these years! , the second half of the poem reveals his characteristic rejection of easy sentiment. [148] Moving from what could have been the first published critical appraisal of the poem's initial peritext, Johnson glances only momentarily at the folk tradition surrounding the poem before focussing on the implications of Hardy's emending the original "believe" of the ninth line to "weave" for the final version of the poem as it appeared two years later in

The Man He Killed ~Thomas Hardy
"Had he and I but met
By some old ancient inn,
We should have sat us down to wet
Right many a nipperkin! "But ranged as infantry,
And staring face to face,
I shot at him and he at me,
And killed him in his place. "I shot him dead because –
Because he was my foe,
Just so – my foe of course he was;
That's clear enough; although "He thought he'd 'list perhaps,
Off-hand like – just as I – Was out of work – had sold his traps – No other reason why. "Yes; quaint and curious war is! You shoot a fellow down You'd treat if met where any bar is, Or help to half-a-crown." Poetry Index Let Me Do Your Website! http://www.SimpleWebsiteDesign.com Do you know someone in the service?
