Thomas hardy was born in Upper Brockhampton, near Dorchester, England. He was educated locally and at 16 was articled to an architect. At 22 he went to London to train as an architect, and returned home in 1867 to pursue his chosen profession. But he had already begun his first novel The Poor Man and the Lady , which was never published. There is speculation that around this time he met and fell in love with Tryphena Sparks, to whom he was related. The nature of their relationship is unclear but 1868 he was sent to St. Juliot, Cornwell, where he met Emma Gifford, whom he married in 1874. This marriage was far from idyllic, but ,ironically, when Emma died in 1912 Hardy was moved to write some of the most moving love poems in the English language. Among his best novels are The return of the Native The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) and Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891). After the critical reception of Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure (1895), which were publicly attacked for their subject matter and portrayal of sexual relationships, Hardy turned his attention to poetry, which he had always regarded as superior to fiction. Thomas Hardy’s Ale
The Legendary Vintage Ale of Dorset
Scarce, subtle and complex, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is the beer enthusiast’s equivalent of rare cognac. Bottle-conditioned to mature in the bottle like fine wine, this old ale/barley wine will improve with age for at least 26 years (and we’re still counting!). Not for the faint of palate, especially when young and brash, maturity brings an elegance of flavors unmatched by any other beer—if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a decade.
Consider these vintage tasting notes from a 1994 Malt Advocate tasting. “It [the 1974 vintage] doesn’t taste like a beer at all, and I would be elated if a case were in my cellar, offered one taster. Lightly sharp up front and somewhat vinous, the flavor slowly revealed toasted malt, walnuts and almonds, burnt wood, and a hint of anise.” On the original 1968 vintage, “We were all convinced it had many additional years to mature. It was like no beer I have ever tasted. Nor do I expect to taste one like this anytime soon. Creamy butterscotch notes flood the taste buds, laced with subtle complex fruit...and a subtle suggestion of vintage port. Elegant and seamless, this beer was a waltz on the palate. Truly sophisticated.”
Best stored and served at cellar temperature—about 55°F—in a snifter. Sip it after dinner with a rich cigar, or savor it with these suggested food pairings:

Thomas Hardy lives Famous vintage beer expected to return to America in July Feb 17, 2003 ADVERTISEMENT
"We were devastated, as were legions of Hardy's fans, when the brewery ceased production of this one-of-a-kind beer in 1999" said George Saxon, President of Phoenix Imports. "After much discussion with Eldridge Pope on options to resurrect the brand, we reached an agreement with them last September to purchase it, along with Royal Oak Pale Ale and Thomas Hardy Country Bitter." The former Pope beers will be brewed by O'Hanlon's Brewing Co. in Devon, not far from Dorchester (home of both Hardy and the former Pope Brewery) in the south of England. Reintroduction plans for Phoenix's brands have not yet been finalized for all countries, but Hardy's will be the first to return to the U.S., probably in August. Royal Oak and Thomas Hardy Country Bitter will follow. Initial brews of Hardy's are underway at O'Hanlon's, true to the original recipe and ingredients. "Fortunately, finding a top-notch brewer to brew the beers for us proved much easier than purchasing the brands," Saxon said. Coincidentally, we had just signed an agreement to import three award-winning, bottle conditioned beers from O'Hanlon's."

THOMAS HARDY AND HIS WESSEX Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) is unique. He is known today as a poet and novelist, as well as the writer of a number of short stories. However he started his career as an architect. His novels and poems are now known and loved throughout the world, yet he was born, grew up and lived most of his long life in a provincial backwater. When he died, he was known for his fatalistic views of life and for being an agnostic; and yet Hardy was quoted as saying that he had once wanted to be a clergyman. He longed to be educated at one of the great universities; although failing his ambition he is now one of the world's most studied authors. His blend of nostalgic longing for a simpler past, together with a "modern" philosophical view of the world, gives us unique insights into the human condition. And his sheer longevity in terms of creative output is amazing in itself. He managed in all more than 70 years of writing novels, short stories, poems and the occasional theatrical exploit. And he was published for more than 50 of those years. Within this site you can find introductions to his novels, poem texts, and photographs of the beautiful part of the world in which Hardy created his own world.

    Thomas Hardy
Claire Tomalin - Author add to cart view cart Book: Hardcover Click here for other formats Whitbread Award winner Claire Tomalin's seminal biography of the enigmatic novelist and poet Thomas Hardy. Today Thomas Hardy is best known for creating the great Wessex landscape as the backdrop to his rural stories, starting with Far from the Madding Crowd , and making them classics. But his true legacy is that of a progressive thinker. When he published Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure late in his career, Hardy explored a very different world than that of his rural tales, one in which the plight of lower classes and women take center stage while the higher classes are damned. Ironically, though, Hardy remained cloaked in the arms of this very upper class during the publication of these books, acting at all times in complete convention with the rules of society. Was he using his books to express himself in a way he felt unable to do in the company he kept, or did he know sensationalism would sell? Award-winning author Claire Tomalin expertly reconstructs the life that led Hardy to maintain conventionality and write revolution. Born in Dorset in 1840, Hardy came of age in rather meager circumstances. At sixteen, he left home for London and slowly worked his way through many rejections to become a published writer. Despite his mother's admonitions to never marry, he wed Emma Lavinia Gifford in 1874 and, even though he fell easily in love, stayed true to her till her death in 1912. He frequently toured London society, but few felt they knew the true Hardy, and it is this very core of self that Tomalin elegantly brings us to know so completely.
