Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy's own life wasn't similar to his stories. He was born in the Egdon Heath, in Dorset, near Dorchester. His father was a master mason and a building contractor. Hardy's mother, whose tastes included Latin poems and French romances, provided for his education. After schooling in Dorchester, Hardy was apprenticed to an architect. He worked in an office, which specialized in restoration of churches. In 1874 Hardy married Emma Lavinia Gifford, for whom 40 years later, after her death, he wrote a series of poems known as Veteris Vestigiae Flammae (Vestiges of an Old Flame). At the age of 22, Hardy moved to London and started to write poems, which idealized the rural life. He was an assistant in the architectural firm of Arthur Blomfield, visited art galleries, attended evening classes in French at King's College, enjoyed Shakespeare and opera, and read works of Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, and John Stuart Mills, whose positivism influenced him deeply. In 1867, Hardy left London for the family home in Dorset, and resumed work briefly with Hicks in Dorchester. Hardy continued his architectural work, but he started to consider literature as his "true vocation." Unable to find a public for his poetry and following the advice of novelist George Meredith, Hardy decided to write novels. His first novel

MISCELLANY
WELCOME TO THE
THOMAS HARDY MISCELLANY This site consists of four sections. The first is a series of articles essays, reflections, narratives, poems, and so on devoted to aspects of Hardy's life and works. For several years the Miscellany was a zine, and now this section represents the archived editions of that effort. The next two projects are photographic, presenting contemporary, previously unpublished photographs of elements of Hardy's work and of his life. Hermann Lea is the first and still the best-known photographer to illustrate Hardy's work by visiting with a camera sites used as models for the fictional world of "Wessex." What remains today of these locations? The Miscellany provides contemporary images of those sites. A second collection of photographs illustrates locales from Hardy's life. The final element of the site is the republication of a long out-of-print book, Thomas Hardy, Novelist or Poet? , by A.E. Newton. You may e-mail queries and suggestions to John Gould at the address below. He wishes to thank gratefully Samphan Antonaccio, the designer of the page. Much help came as well from Paul Kalkstein. Thomas Hardy’s English Lessons

By THOMAS MALLON Published: January 28, 2007 When Thomas Hardy drew his first chancy breaths inside a Dorset cottage in 1840, Wordsworth had yet to become England’s poet laureate. By his ninth decade, still writing, Hardy enjoyed listening to the wireless with his dog, Wessex, and had seen the silent-film adaptation of his own “Tess of the D’Urbervilles.” The author’s life span seems somehow even vaster than it was, a match for the cosmically long view Hardy took of his fictional characters, fate’s playthings set in motion on a “blighted star.” Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Carin Goldberg

Thomas Hardy Far from the Madding Crowd Jude the Obscure The Mayor of Casterbridge Squire Petrick's Lady ... Tess of the d'Urbervilles - Study Guide Introduction
"Lucetta had been unable to restrain her glance from flitting across into Farfrae's eyes like a bird to its nest. But Henchard was constructed upon too large a scale to discern such minutiae as these by any evening light, which to him were as the notes of an insect that lie above the compass of the human ear." ( The Mayor of Casterbridge Thomas Hardy was born in Dorset, in the village of Higher Bockhampton near Dorchester to a simple rural life. In his early years, his mother supported his love for books while his father, a stonemason by trade, taught him the violin. After his schooling in Dorchester, Hardy pursued a career as an architect, training as an apprentice locally when he was 16. He left the rural South West at the age of 22 and travelled to London where he worked as an architect for Arthur Blomfield. This was a period of great change for the young Hardy who was used to rural existence and had held a strong enough faith to consider taking Holy Orders in the early 1860s. In the metropolis his passion for reading continued but he lived amid the bustle of city life and like many 19th century intellectuals he lost his faith and became an agnostic. In 1867, homesick for the countryside that would later become the setting for many of his novels, he returned to Dorchester where he continued his work in architecture but began to write. During this period he wrote the unpublished novel

Introduction
Print this section Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), English novelist and poet of the naturalist movement, who powerfully delineated characters, portrayed in his native Dorset, struggling helplessly against their passions and external circumstances. Hardy was born in Higher Bockhampton, Dorsetshire, June 2, 1840, and educated in local schools and later privately. His father, a stonemason, apprenticed him early to a local architect engaged in restoring old churches. From 1862 to 1867 Hardy worked for an architect in London and later continued to practice architecture, despite ill health, in Dorset. Meanwhile, he was writing poetry with little success. He then turned to novels as more salable, and by 1874 he was able to support himself by writing. This is also the year that Hardy married his first wife, Emma Gifford. Their marriage lasted until her death in 1912, which prompted Hardy to write his collection of poems called

Thomas Hardy (1840-1928)
Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock.
"Now they are all on their knees,"
An elder said as we sat in a flock
By the embers in hearthside ease.
We pictured the meek mild creatures where
They dwelt in their strawy pen,
Nor did it occur to one of us there
To doubt they were kneeling then.
So fair a fancy few would weave
In these years! Yet, I feel,
If someone said on Christmas Eve, "Come; see the oxen kneel "In the lonely barton by yonder coomb Our childhood used to know," I should go with him in the gloom, Hoping it might be so. ("The Oxen")
