The Peter Handke affair
A chronicle of the debate in the German-language press
The Heinrich Heine Prize of the City of Düsseldorf (not to be confused with the Heinrich Heine Prize of the GDR, which was awarded every year from 1950 - 1990), is given out every two years and includes 50,000 euros in prize money. It is awarded to personalities whose literary works promote human rights and social and political progress , and foster understanding and solidarity between peoples . In late May, Austrian author Peter Handke was informed he had been selected as winner of this year's prize. A controversy then flared up over Handke's public support for Slobodan Milosevic, and shortly thereafter the prize was revoked. We've compiled below a series of voices from the German-language press.

In February, the National Theatre will present the UK professional premiere of Peter Handke's 1996 play, The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other
It is the first major London production of one of Handke's works for nearly 20 years; the last at the National was the verse-drama The Long Way Round (also known as Walk About the Villages in Michael Roloff's translation) given a Cottosloe run in 1989.
Before that, we have to go back to 1976, when the National (again) produced the anti-capitalist piece They Are Dying Out , while another Handke play had actually been seen in the West End three years earlier when Hampstead Theatre's Ride Across Lake Constance transferred for a brief period. It's not surprising that Handke has received so little exposure in the UK with such gaps between performances. His works are difficult, challenging and far from commercial. They're also among the most fascinating and theatrical pieces written since World War II and, with Beckett now a firmly established playwright considered worthy of frequent production, maybe Handke is on the point of being more-widely discovered. Hour is unusual amongst Handke's oeuvre in that it has no speech – just 450 "characters" who spin, trip and skim their way past each other in a choreographed stream of near-misses. The lack of dialogue is particularly noticeable as language has been one of Handke's chief preoocupations since early plays like

Handke was born in Griffen on December 6, 1942. He studied law at the University of Graz from 1961 to 1965. He began writing novels, plays, poetry, and prose pieces almost simultaneously with the aim of distancing himself from established literary conventions and establishing contact with the “heile Natur”, or inner world, a concept he derived from Goethe . His work is considered representative of the style Neue Subjektivit¤t. In 1966 he published his first novel Der Hornissen (The Hornets), and had three plays produced, including

Peter Handke on his attitude towards Milosevic
Peter Handke talks about his unalterable stance on Serbia, Srebrenica and Milosevic in a lengthy interview with relentlessly probing editors Martin Meyer and Andreas Breitenstein. "Where is this command given by Milosevic? How can one establish a connection between him and Srebrenica? I don't know. And by the way Milosevic was not a dictator but an autocrat who led a semi-authoritarian regime. The press was independent, but television was under state control. I have no opinion on Milosevic. None at all. I don't think he's good and I don't think he's bad. I wouldn't like to compare him with Hitler or Ceausescu or Saddam Hussein. I think that's wrong. It's oversimplifying things to portray Milosevic as the main culprit of the wars in the Balkans." » full article (external link, German)

His first play, Publikumsbeschimpfung (Insulting the Audience, 1966) was an example of so-called antitheater writing. In the play, four actors tell the audience that it will not see a play and end by insulting the audience. Handke’s novels include Die Hornissen ( The Hornets, 1966) and Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter ( The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick, 1970). He wrote and directed the motion-picture Linkshandige Frau (The Left-Handed Woman, 1977).

Dicatating Consensus
The media come between Serbia and the world.
Review by Paul Lekas Handke, Peter. A Journey to the Rivers: Justice for Serbia . (Viking, 1997). A s the only means of disseminating information beyond primary observers, the media has the ability to ingrain views into a whole populace, especially views about societies that are unfamiliar to its audience. Such a capability, when supported by common acceptance, can systematically lend to the persecution of dissenting opinions. In the West, the media's influence has already led to persecution of dissent and to a partial compromise of democracy. And yet the threat posed by the media cannot be deconstructed as easily as the previous Western menace of fascism. The "consensus" for global justice among Western nation-states and the recent advent of a homogenized and contrived political correctness have facilitated and concealed the media's subtle impositions. Nonetheless, in pushing a small group of "proper" values and conventions, the media has maimed the Western popular consciousness and damaged the notion of individual thought and questioning. Its biases are difficult to notice because, in many instances, they have fully penetrated the Western consciousness. What to call this phenomenon? "Soft totalitarianism" is one of many terms recently coined by a few French and German critics who oppose the media's hegemony. Among these critics ranks Peter Handke, a popular and influential post-War German intellectual currently living in France. Provocative in his critiques, Handke was recently labeled a "terrorist" and "reactionary romanticist" for his "revolting insinuations" by both left and right in Europe. His latest work
