Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Knut Hamsun Biography Knut Hamsun (August 4, 1859 - February 19, 1952) was a leading Norwegian author, born in Lom under the name of Knud Pedersen.
He first received acclaim for his 1890 novel Sult, translated as Hunger. The semi-autobiographical work described a young writer's descent into near madness as a result of hunger and poverty. In many ways, the novel presages the writings of Franz Kafka and other twentieth-century novelists, who explored the madness of the contemporary human condition. The book has since become one of the most influential novels of the 20th century.
Other important works by Hamsun include Pan (1894) and The Growth of the Soil (1917), for which he received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1920.
Despite his immense popularity in Norway and around the world, Hamsun's reputation waned considerably because of his support of Vidkun Quisling's Nazi regime during World War II. Following a meeting with Joseph Goebbels in 1943, he sent Goebbels his Nobel Prize medal as a gift. Hamsun did meet with Adolf Hitler, however, and tried to have him remove Josef Terboven from the position of Reichskommissar of Norway.
After the war, he was confined for several months in a psychiatric hospital for tests to determine his sanity. However, in 1948 he was fined 325,000 kroner for collaboration.

Knut Hamsun
Since the death of Ibsen and Strindberg, Hamsun is undoubtedly the foremost creative writer of the Scandinavian countries. Those approaching most nearly to his position are probably Selma Lagerlöf in Sweden and Henrik Pontoppidan in Denmark. Both these, however, seem to have less than he of that width of outlook, validity of interpretation and authority of tone that made the greater masters what they were. His reputation is not confined to his own country or the two Scandinavian sister nations. It spread long ago over the rest of Europe, taking deepest roots in Russia, where several editions of his collected works have already appeared, and where he is spoken of as the equal of Tolstoy and Dostoyevski. The enthusiasm of this approval is a characteristic symptom that throws interesting light on Russia as well as on Hamsun. Hearing of it, one might expect him to prove a man of the masses, full of keen social consciousness. Instead, he must be classed as an individualistic romanticist and a highly subjective aristocrat, whose foremost passion in life is violent, defiant deviation from everything average and ordinary. He fears and flouts the dominance of the many, and his heroes, who are nothing but slightly varied images of himself, are invariably marked by an originality of speech and action that brings them close to, if not across, the borderline of the eccentric.

There are those who would hold that the name of Knut Hamsun should appear prominently on any list of "great Norwegians" for he was a Norwegian, and his literary works reflected genius and artistry. It is true that he brought credit to his homeland in 1920 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature (for "The Growth of the Soil" penned in 1917). But it is also true that as years went on, he became devoted to the cause of the Nazis, and made a gift of his Nobel Prize Medal to Hitler lieutenant Joseph Goebbels. When the Nazis barged into Norway, establishing a puppet government, nearly every Norwegian reviled at the occupation and discerned clearly the evil in the cause of the occupiers. Hamsun welcomed the invading troops. At the war's end, Hamsun, once a hero to Norway, was convicted in connection with his pro-Nazi activities and heavily fined being spared imprisonment undoubtedly in deference to his literary contributions and age. While the works of Hamsun may be entitled to reverence for their greatness, can the

It is not difficult to understand why Knut Hamsum was one of the Norwegian courts’ biggest headaches in 1945. Beside Ibsen, Hamsun had made Norway’s greatest contribution to world literature; how could the cultural honour of the nation be rescued from the shame of a treason conviction? The authorities resorted to a judicial observation process that concluded that the old man had suffered from «permanently_impaired_mental_faculties»"permanently impaired mental faculties" during the occupation, and that for this reason he should not be made made legally responsible for his actions according to Section 86 of the Penal Code. On the basis of the Treason Edict of December 1944, however, a liability case was opened regarding Hamsun’s membership of the "Nasjonal Samling"«Nasjonal_Samling» Party (NS). This confirmed a verdict of guilt, after an appeal to the Court of Appeal. Ever since, the question of Knut Hamsun’s Nazi leanings has traumatized Norwegian culture and society. Hamsun shook up the special Norwegian myth of the Great Poet, which had developed historically in parallel with the creation of the modern Norwegian nation. Wergeland and Bjørnson had also helped to build up an image of the poet as the herald of Norwegian independence and Norway’s national identity, and when Bjørnson died Knut Hamsun more or less enthusiastically adopted this role. The fact that he so clearly failed his country at the time of its greatest need may have helped to give the myth a blow that all "good Norwegians"«good_Norwegians» could only regard as an attack on the very cultural identity of the nation. This brought out a much more disturbing picture of the artist in conflict with society, a situation that has been much more difficult to take on board.
