Hammett Crime Stories and Other Writings In scores of stories written for Black Mask and other pulp magazines in the 1920s and 1930s, Dashiell Hammett used the vernacular adventure tale to register the jarring textures and revved-up cadences of modern America. His stories opened up crime fiction to the realities of American streets and American speech. These texts, along with some revealing essays and an early version of his novel The Thin Man, are reprinted here for the first time without the cuts and revisions introduced by later editors. Hammett's years of experience as a Pinkerton detective give even his most outlandishly plotted mysteries a gritty credibility. Mixing melodramatic panache and poker-faced comedy, his stories are hard-edged entertainment for an era of headlong change and extravagant violence, tracking the devious, nearly nihilistic exploits of con men and blackmailers, slumming socialites and deadpan assassins. As guide through this underworld he created the Continental Op, the nameless and deliberately unheroic detective separated from the brutality and corruption around him only by his professionalism. I dropped off as the streetcar turned into Market Street. The taxi, close behind, slowed down, and its door swung open. 'Sixth and Mission,' I said as I hopped in. McCloor could have gone in any direction from Taylor Street. I had to guess. The best guess seemed to be that he would make for the other side of Market Street. It was fairly dark by now. We had to go down to Fifth Street to get off Market, then over to Mission and back up to Sixth. We got to Sixth Street without seeing McCloor. I couldn't see him on Sixth Street either way from the crossing. 'On up to Ninth,' I ordered and while we rode told the driver what kind of man I was looking for. We arrived at Ninth Street. No McCloor. I cursed and pushed my brains around

47. Dashiell Hammett
Samuel dashiell hammett (18941961) was a prolific writer of short stories for the pulp magazines in the 1920s-1930s, but only wrote five mystery novels.
http://www.mysterylist.com/hammett.htm
Dashiell Hammett's Mystery Novels
Hammett had an interesting life, being involved with the communist party and suffering persecution under McCarthy's HUAC; also a long-term involvement with the playwright Lillian Hellman. At one time in his life he was, off and on, a Pinkerton agent, where he learned the detective trade. But that is all beyond the scope of this web site.* All of his lasting writing was done between 1922 and 1934.
Footnote: Hammett is very good at Dickensian names (something very few authors except Dickens can get away with usually): Spade, Madvig, Flitcraft, Gutman, for example.
Reviews of the Books
"Red Harvest" This, his first novel, is very disappointing, being an episodic compilation of short stories set in the corrupt mining town of Personville ('Poisonville'), modelled on Butte, Montana. The Continental Op has taken on the task of cleaning up the town, and his method is to set the different gangster factions against each other. It is sheer pulp fiction, with something like two-dozen or so killings, mostly shoot-em-ups of Keystone Kops freneticism in which practically every major character ends up dead. A couple of 'real' murders are solved by the Op using detection, but otherwise this does not rank as a detective novel. His dialogue is good, however, and some of the characters are well-drawn (especially the floozy Dinah Brand and the corrupt Sheriff Noonan). It is best to read this book as a parody of the gangster fiction of the time. "The Dain Curse"

    Introduction
Audio Stories The Critter-iculum The Eagles Choice ... Rock Solid
The Tail Of Dashiell Hammett There once was a very special pig and his name was Dashiell Hammett (emphasis on the Ham!) From the time he was a piglet every animal in the barnyard knew that he was unique. You see, Dashiell was both witty and wise.
This extraordinary combination of virtues made him a very desirable friend. In point of fact, on any given morning passersby would see a line of animals that wound around the silo, through the hen house and past the stable—all waiting for a chance to visit with Dashiell in his sty. Upon entry, each would be treated as if he or she were the most important creature Dashiell had ever met. The smaller animals would jump on top of him and he would walk with them about the yard as they talked. Thus began the current practice of “piggyback riding.” The adolescent groupies called him the “Divine Swine” and made him a folk hero.
Conversations with Dashiell ranged from “egg”istentialist discussions with the chickens about whether they or the eggs came first to inane babblings with the ever-silly geese. Cows came to him worried about giving fat-free milk, for light mocha lattes. A typical conversation might transpire like this one which was overheard one evening between Dashiell and the farm’s infamous Billy goat. “Mr. Ha-a-a-ammett,” queried Billy, “why a-a-a-am I so unpopular with the sheep?”

Dashiell Hammett Hammett's stint as a Pinkerton's operative was interrupted by the First World War. He enlisted and served as part of the Motor Ambulance Corps of the US Army in 1918-19, until he caught influenza, from which he developed the tuberculosis that weakened him for the rest of his life. Given a medical discharge, he went back to work for Pinkerton's at the Spokane, Washington, branch. A recurrence of tuberculosis put him back into hospital, but by mid-1921 was again working for Pinkerton's, this time in San Francisco, and now married to Josephine (Jose) Dolan, a young woman who had nursed him in hospital and who was already five months pregnant. In February 1922, suffering from ill-health and increasingly cynical about detective work, Hammett resigned from Pinkerton's. This was the beginning of Hammett's career as a writer. After he left Pinkerton's he signed up for journalism courses at Munson's Business College and later the same year was managing to earn money not just by writing advertising copy but by selling his first short pieces and stories. His break-through came with a vignette, 'The Parthian Shot', accepted for publication in a society magazine called The Smart Set which was run by H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan, who had (in 1920) also been responsible for starting

    Dashiell Hammett: A Memoir
    By Lillian Hellman
The day of his death came almost five years ago, on January 10th, 1961. I will never write that biography because I cannot write about my closest, my most beloved friend. And maybe, too, because all of those questions through all of the thirty-one on and off years, and the sometime answers, got muddled, and life changed for both of us and the questions and answers became one in the end, flowing together from the days when I was young to the days when I was middle-aged. And so this will be no attempt at a biography of Samuel Dashiell Hammett, born in St. Mary's County, Maryland on May 27, 1894. Nor will it be a critical appraisal of his stories. There was a day when I thought all of them very good. But all of them are not good, though most of them, I think, are very good. It is only right to say immediately that, by publishing them at all, I have done what Hammett did not want to do: he turned down all offers to republish the stories, although I never knew the reason and never asked. I did know from what he said about his unfinished novel, Tulip , that he meant to start a new literary life and may be didn't want the old work to get in the way. But sometimes I think he was just too ill to care, too worn out to listen to plans or read contracts. The fact of breathing, just breathing, took up all the days and nights.
