Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804) The solid reputation of Alexander Hamilton places him among but a handful of figures in the history of America. No single figure was ever a stronger advocate of our Constitution; and only a few people have made a comparable contribution to the substance of American government. Because of his fame, few Americans have been as widely controversial as Hamilton. To this day, his importance remains unsurpassed in the areas of sharp finance, principled politics, romantic scandal, hard work, intellectual acuteness, and bravery. Hamilton’s visage on the $10 bill is the only non-presidential face besides Benjamin Franklin to appear on our common currency. A chronology of his life Alexander Hamilton was born as a British subject on the island of Nevis in the West Indies on the 11 th of January 1755. His father was James Hamilton, a Scottish merchant of St. Christopher. His grandfather was Alexander Hamilton, of Grange, Lanarkshire. One of his great grandfathers was Sir R. Pollock, the Laird of Cambuskeith. Hamilton’s mother was Rachael Fawcette Levine, of French Huguenot descent. When she was very young, she married a Danish proprietor of St. Croix named John Michael Levine. Ms. Levine left her husband and was later divorced from him on June 25, 1759. Under Danish law, the (the court ordering the divorce) Ms. Levine was forbidden from remarrying. Thus, Hamilton’s birth was illegitimate. Alexander Hamilton had one brother, James Hamilton.

Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was one of the most influential of the United States' founding fathers. As the first secretary of the treasury he placed the new nation on a firm financial footing, and although his advocacy of strong national government brought him into bitter conflict with Thomas Jefferson and others, his political philosophy was ultimately to prevail in governmental development. Hamilton's own career was terminated prematurely when he was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr in 1804. ~ Early Life ~ Hamilton was born on the West Indian island of Nevis, probably in 1755. Since he was the illegitimate son of Rachel Fawcett Lavien and James Hamilton, both of West Indian trading families, his exact birth date and the circumstances of his early life are difficult to determine. Modern research has established, however, that he was probably not born in 1757, as he and his children supposed; that he spent his youth mostly on the island of Saint Croix apprenticed as a clerk; and that in 1772 he was sent to New York City by his guardian, the merchant Nicholas Cruger.
Hamilton was obviously precocious, and his guardian sought to enroll him in the College of New Jersey at Princeton. When refused permission there to accelerate his program of studies, he enrolled instead at King's College (now Columbia University), New York City, in 1773 or 1774. In 1774-75, when he was not yet 20, he entered the growing dispute between the American colonies and the British government by writing many fervent tracts filled with doctrines of rebellion and natural rights derived from the philosopher John Locke.

Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was born in January 11, 1755 on the West Indies island of Nevis (an island held by the British), the illegitimate child of James Hamilton and Rachel Faucett Lavien. Rachel died in 1768. At twelve, Alexander became a clerk and apprentice at a counting house. At fifteen, he was left in charge of the business. The Royal Danish-American Gazette published Hamilton's description of a hurricane on August 30th, 1772, spurring his family and friends to provide the means for Hamilton to be educated. Alexander went to a grammar school in Elizabethtown, New Jersey and then studied at King's College (now Columbia) in 1774, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in only one year. "A feeble executive implies a feeble execution of the government. A feeble execution is but another phrase for a bad execution; and a government ill executed, whatever may be its theory, must be, in practice, a bad government." (Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 69

Alexander Hamilton the Revolutionary Alexander Hamilton was born on January 11, 1755 (or 1757 by some accounts) in Charleston on the West Indies island of Nevis. He was born out of wedlock to Rachel Faucitt Lavien and James Hamilton, who abandoned the family in 1765. A local clergyman raised funds to send Alexander away to school in 1773. He entered Kings College (now known as Columbia University) in 1774. In the Revolutionary War he distinguished himself in the eyes of General Washington who made him one of his six aides-de-camp (secretaries) in 1777, and rode beside him in the battles at Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. Hamilton married Elizabeth Schuyler in 1780, with whom he had eight children. Although this incredible man has been studied and written about as much as any American statesman, historians often pass over any mention of Hamilton's expression of intense love for his male comrades.
Alexander Hamilton and George Washington
Alexander Hamilton's election to the first Continental Congress led him to a number of prominent assignments in building the new nation. He was a driving force in the ratification of the U. S. Constitution, and was the only New York delegate to sign the document. On June 18, 1787, he gave an address in which he outlined a comprehensive plan for the national government. He co-authored the Federalists papers with John Jay and James Madison under the pseudonym Publius. "I'm sorry you went away. I wish you were back."

Alexander Hamilton
At the inauguration of the constitutional government in 1789 Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804), George Washington's former military aide and a renowned financier, was appointed the first Secretary of the Treasury and thus he became the architect of the structure of the Department. Desirous of a strong, centrally controlled Treasury, Hamilton did constant battle with Thomas Jefferson, then Secretary of State, and Albert Gallatin, then a Congressman, over the amount of power the Department of the Treasury should be allowed to wield. He designed a Treasury Department for the collection and disbursing of public revenue, but also for the promotion of the economic development of the country. Hamilton also introduced plans for a United States Mint. Though he wanted the Mint to be a structural part of the Treasury, he lost the battle to Jefferson and it was established in 1792 within the State Department. The Mint became an independent agency in 1797 and was eventually transferred to Treasury in 1873. Under personal financial pressure, his office paying only $3500 a year, Hamilton resigned in 1795 and joined the New York bar. He kept in close contact with President Washington, however, and continued to give financial advice to his successor, Oliver Wolcott. Hamilton was killed in 1804 in a duel with Aaron Burr arising from a political dispute.

A national debt, if it is not excessive, will be to us a national blessing.
Alexander Hamilton
Justice is the end of government. It is the end of civil society. It ever has been and ever will be pursued until it be obtained, or until liberty be lost in the pursuit. In a society under the forms of which the stronger faction can readily unite and oppress the weaker, anarchy may as truly be said to reign as in a state of nature, where the weaker individual is not secured against the violence of the stronger; and as, in the latter state, even the individuals are prompted, by the uncertainty of their condition, to submit to a government which may protect the weak as well as themselves; so, in the former state, will the more powerful factions or parties be gradually induced, by a like motive to wish for a government which will protect all parties, the weaker as well as the more powerful.
Alexander Hamilton
When men exercise their reason coolly and freely on a variety of distinct questions, they inevitably fall into different opinions on some of them. When they are governed by a common passion, their opinions, if they are to be called, will be the same.

At dawn on the morning of July 11 , 1804, political antagonists and personal enemies Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met on the heights of Weehawken New Jersey , to settle their longstanding differences with a duel. The participants fired their pistols in close succession. Burr's shot met its target immediately, fatally wounding Hamilton and leading to his death the following day. Burr escaped unharmed. This tragically extreme incident reflected the depth of animosity aroused by the first emergence of the nation's political party system. Both men were political leaders in New York: Burr, a prominent Republican, and Hamilton, leader of the opposing Federalist Party. Burr had found himself the brunt of Hamilton's political maneuvering on several occasions, including the unusual presidential election of 1800 , in which vice-presidential candidate Burr almost defeated his running mate, presidential candidate Thomas Jefferson . In 1804, Hamilton opposed Burr's closely fought bid for governor of New York. On the heels of this narrow defeat, Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel on the grounds that Hamilton had publicly maligned his character.
