The Dan Schneider Interview 3: Pete Hamill (first posted 8/8/07) DS: Pete Hamill, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed for The Dan Schneider Interview series. The very purpose of this series is to combat what I call the ‘deliteracy’ of current and common culture, i.e.- the active dumbing down of art and discourse. Nowadays, many magazines that used to interview people of substance and ideas would rather speak with the latest pop babe of the month, or the current politician whose garbage is grabbing the most headlines. Additionally, even though most of this world’s information sharing is done online- not via tv nor radio, the Internet has become the largest haven to the Lowest Common Denominator- and a Lite version of the LCD, at that. Most websites, if they want articles on any subject, demand that the articles be about five or six hundred words, claiming that web surfers will not read longer pieces. I disagree with that claim, and cite my own popular personal and non-commercial website, Cosmoetica , as proof that it is wrong.

'Forever' by Pete Hamill
Fi ction - paperback; Back Bay Books; 613 pages; 2004. Sometimes you pick up a book and get totally swept away by the story that you forgot all sense of time or place. So it was with this critically acclaimed novel by the former editor in chief of the New York Post and the New York Daily News. At 613 pages I expected this hefty tome to last me a couple of weeks but I was so caught up in the life of Cormac O'Connor, an Irish immigrant who lands in New York in 1740 and remains...forever, that I raced through it in less than a week and even then I tried to draw out the last hundred or so pages because I didn't want it to end. I'm not sure how to describe Forever . It's part swashbuckling adventure, part romance, part historical drama, part fable. It spans more than three centuries and tells the story of a poor rural Irish lad who is granted immortality, as long as he never steps foot off the island of Manhattan. And because part of his deal is to ensure he lives a very full and active life, rather than sitting on the sidelines merely existing, he throws himself into all kinds of situations. Over the course of some 300 years he witnesses (and sometimes partakes in) many great scenes in history, including the American Revolution and the destruction of the World Trade Centre on 9/11. During this time he also meets and falls in love with several women, learns many different trades, carries out various professions (printer, artist, journalist) and teaches himself a host of languages.

TOOLS AS ART: The Hechinger Collection (Abrams, $ 39.95) by John Hechinger, Sr. and Pete Hamill. TOOLS contains 240 color plates and the work of more than 150 artists. John Hechinger , of Hechinger's Hardware, began collecting the fabulous 300-piece art collection displayed in this book seventeen years ago.
Pete Hamill , popular writer and best-selling author of A Drinking Life , has written the text. Interview with John Hechinger, Sr. and Pete Hamill: BC: So, how did you two get hooked up?
JH: We were introduced by our publisher, Paul Gottlieb.
BC: Tell us something about the book. It really is beautiful.
JH: Well, I remember reading once in Smithsonian Magazine that sex is merely the sublimation of man's desire to browse in hardware stores.
BC: Ha Ha. But really, how did this collection get started?
We had a new corporate office building for Hechinger's Hardware. It was state of the art in every respect. There were miles of corridor, and forty to fifty windowless offices. It was boring! Some of my associates had admired a Jim Dine in our boardroom and the rest is history.
I thought that if we could put these artists on the walls, it would raise the consciousness of the people who were dealing everyday in tens and thousands of the same item. It would raise the level of respect for their own job. It would help them see that their job was one of dignity.

Roscoe' triumphant William Kennedy's latest novel mixes Albany politics, love and murder By PETE HAMILL, Special to the Times Union
First published: Sunday, January 13, 2002
"Roscoe'' (Viking; 291 pages; $24.95) the latest book from Albany author William Kennedy is a splendid novel: at once an exuberant elegy, a sad comedy, a realistic fable of life and death. In the seventh novel of Kennedy's "Albany cycle,'' the meshed subjects are the stuff of the real world, from politics to love, corruption to honor. But there is also room for a ghost story (the epitome of an unburied past), several murders, suggestions of incest, much gaudy corruption, and the distinction between sin and vice. Since this is a novel, not a treatise, the grand abstractions exist in living human beings. And here they are lived most intensely through the wonderfully complex figure of Roscoe Owen Conway. Falstaffian figure Roscoe is a lawyer, one of three friends who in 1921 ran an insurgent campaign that took over the Democratic machine in Albany. He is at once a cynic and an idealist, a realist and a romantic, and when we meet him on V-J Day in 1945, he is trying to make sense of his life. He is secretary and second in command of the party, working from an office on the 11th floor of the State Bank building, "the main stop for Democrats on the way to heaven.''

by Alexandra Jacobs December 12, 2004 Downtown: My Manhattan, by Pete Hamill. Little, Brown and Company, 289 pages, $23.95. Pete Hamill and I make an odd couple. He's a grizzled old guy; I'm a fresh young daisy. He's been the editor in chief of the New York Post and the Daily News, covered numerous foreign wars and produced a fat pile of fiction; I'm-let's face it-kind of a dilettante. And yet my contented canter through Downtown, his 19th book, brings hope that things might work out between us. This one is a memoir, not a novel, but along with Williamsburg's Mary Francie Nolan ( A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) and Bensonhurst's Tony Manero ( Saturday Night Fever), Mr. Hamill had the good literary fortune to be born in Brooklyn-specifically, Park Slope-blinking in wonderment at the distant, sparkly spires of Manhattan. His mother pluckily dubbed this vision "Oz," and her son wasted no time in finding the yellow brick road leading there. (And this is the right way to go. Trust me: The reverse trajectory, though trendy these days, doesn't feel quite so glorious.) Mr. Hamill has paid rent, by his own calculation, at 14 separate addresses on our "long skinny island." He has hoisted sheet metal in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, studied graphic design, toiled as a messenger boy and covered grisly murders. His personal library is stocked with over 500 books of New York City history (my sympathies to his wife), and he's read countless more. He's qualified.
