He also worked as a columnist, has written articles for numerous magazines and has even written screenplays. Hamill is the author of 20 books, including the novel SNOW IN AUGUST and his bestselling memoir A DRINKING LIFE He lives in New York City. Back to top. INTERVIEW June 22, 2007 In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Tom Callahan, author, essayist and journalist Pete Hamill discusses the lost New York of the 1930s that he captures in his latest novel, NORTH RIVER , and describes the extensive research he performed - as well as his reliance on memories and family stories - to bring that period to life. He also comments on some of the social and political parallels that are present between the Depression era and today, and explains how this "love story for grownups" differs from typical sentimental romances. Pete Hamill: PH: PH: BRC: No writer is more closely associated with New York City than you. The New York you write about here is the New York during the Great Depression. Once again, you capture the feel of the city streets and the language of its citizens. Talk about the North River neighborhood. Did people as late as the 1930s still refer to the Hudson as the North River?

I’ve been reading aspects of New York history for many years, to help me understand the city as a journalist. So I read again the classics: Edith Wharton, Henry James, Louis Auchincloss (for social details); the Stokes

Keepers of the Lost Ark? Family Ties On the Job Today's Tattoos ... Bouillabaisse a la Marseillaise If you were going to show me the town and give me some New York City experiences to take home, what would we do? And what are some things that we would avoid like the plague in New York City? I think the Upper East Side, where there are a lot of people walking around with tiny dogs and falling nose jobs, you know, from plastic surgery 35 years ago, you probably should not bother. I mean, go to the Metropolitan Museum and that is technically on the Upper East Side and the Museum of the City of New York and the Jewish Museum…all of Museum Row is worth looking at because there is amazing stuff up there. But walking the streets is kind of boring. There's no sense of the past. The past is the 1940s. When they tore down the old mansions and put up these big buildings that house too many people where the ceilings are too low…it's alright if you are 4'9" or something. I think anyone who hasn't been here before should get out of Manhattan. Go out to Brooklyn or go to Coney Island and get to Queens.

Forever by Pete Hamill 613 pages, 2003 The Never-ending Story Reviewed by David Abrams Pete Hamill knows New York. As editor of both the New York Post and the New York Daily News and frequent contributor to the New York Times and The New Yorker , there's little doubt his passion for and knowledge of the city and its people runs deep. Cut his veins, he probably bleeds apple juice. In his latest novel, Forever , Hamill takes that love and understanding and wraps NYC in a big, smothery embrace. Emphasis on the smothering part. Forever is ambitious and frequently unsuccessful as it tries to chart a huge chunk of Gotham history in 600 tedious pages. The novel is essentially a time-travel fantasy where instead of going back in time, the central character comes forward, living each day of American history from pre-Revolutionary War to September 11. We first meet Cormac O'Connor as a five-year-old living in 18th-century Ireland. He's called Robert Carson because his family has tried to keep its Celtic beliefs hidden from Protestant persecutors roaming the land embodied in the cruel character of the Earl of Warren. Cormac adopts his real name after his parents are killed by the earl and he vows to seek revenge. Before he died, Cormac's father told him, "In our tribe, the murderer must be pursued to the ends of the earth. And his male children, too." And so, Cormac follows Warren to the American colonies, chasing him through the dirt streets of New York (then little more than a colony of Dutch farmers).

"[Bush and Cheney] didn't grow up in Brooklyn, where you know if you punch a guy in the mouth, he's going to come back with three other guys and punch you back." June 10, 2007 NEW YORK CITY has been Pete Hamill's beat for decades, and not a few of its residents are aware of that. When Hamill and I stepped out of a diner south of Union Square in Manhattan last Sunday, a woman got off her bicycle, pointed at him, and exclaimed: "You! How are you!? I love your books!" After complimenting the bicyclist on her flashy helmet, Hamill said he had a new book "North River" coming out. She already knew, she said, and couldn't wait to get it. "North River," Hamill's 10th novel, is set in Manhattan during the Depression, and from the title on in, it is grounded in New York City history: North River was common parlance for the Hudson until the 1950s. Hamill has also written 10 works of nonfiction, including the superb memoir "A Drinking Life" (1994), which tells of his growing up in Brooklyn, where he was born in 1935; his passion for baseball (the Dodgers, if you didn't know), books, and art; and, above all, his longing for a broader life than the Depression would allow his Irish immigrant parents to achieve (or that drinking, which he gives up in the course of the book, would allow him to sustain). Journalism was Hamill's point of entry into that life. He started in 1960 as a gofer-cum-reporter for the then-liberal New York Post, and over the course of his career wrote columns for and edited that newspaper (regular reading in my Brooklyn household growing up) and edited the Daily News. His book, "News Is a Verb: Journalism at the End of the Twentieth Century" (1998), is a primer on the newspaper business, and an expression of his anxieties about its prospects.

    "North River"
(Reviewed by Poornima Apte NOV 30, 2007) North River When the story opens, Delaney is living with ghosts memories of his Irish wife, Molly, who suddenly walked out one day and is presumed to have committed suicide. His daughter, Grace, too has run away and married a revolutionary Mexican. Much of the story in North River moves along too predictably. Delaney maintains a friendship with a local mobster, Eddie Corso, who had served alongside him in the war. The relationship gets Delaney into trouble with a rival gangster faction and for a while it seems as if that subplot will provide a narrative worth riding. But that particular trail turns out to be a damp squib. There is of course the other question about whether or not Grace will return to reclaim the now 3-year-old Carlito but by the end of the novel, the reader has lost so much interest, to almost not care.
