The Department of Screen Arts Cultures at the University of Michigan is fortunate to have its own departmental library, The donald hall Collection.
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/sac/collections.html
Robert Shaye , President and CEO of New Line Cinema and an alumnus of the University of Michigan (BBA ’60), the library’s primary mission is to support screenwriting. Upon presenting the gift, Mr. Shaye noted: "There is no school in the country really focusing on producing great screenwriting. I thought the program could distinguish itself by focusing on one aspect of the film industry and doing it well! Michigan has a tradition of honoring quality writing and his is just another part of it.” The DHC is named for the renowned poet and author, Donald Hall , who taught at Michigan from 1957 to 1975 and it honors the noted professor who greatly influenced Mr. Shaye during his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. The library contains thousands of screenplays, dvds, videotapes and laserdiscs. In addition, viewing stations are available for patrons who wish to screen films for academic assignments or personal pleasure.

An Interview with Donald Hall
B. Renner elimae: You have, it seems to me, managed to straddle the poetry of this century. You are old enough to have had contacts with many of the great modernists as well as with figures from the generation just after them, Winters and Thomas, for example. You have had close relationships with a number of the most important writers of your own "generation." As a teacher and lecturer, as well as an editor and editorial consultant, you have affected younger writers. I wonder if you might generalize about the movements of poetry after the modernists: i.e., have we made any progress since 1930, or are we holding still or even losing ground? Are there major trends that are actually worth noting, or have the past 60 years been too diffuse? Donald Hall: Recently I read an essay by a psychoanalyst asserting that there was no progress in psychoanalysis. For this reason he declared that psychoanalysis was an art and not a science. You ask, "Are we holding still or even losing ground?" Without the possibility of progress, I don't think the question applies.
It is seventy-five years since the annus mirabilis of 1922. Think of seventy-five years before 1922: In 1847, Wordsworth was alive. Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were both published that year. Elizabeth Barrett had just married Robert Browning who would not write

Poet Laureate Donald Hall Reflects on Age and Nature
New U.S. poet laureate Donald Hall gives a tour of his New Hampshire farm where he has written poetry for over 30 years. He also reads poems on nature, love and loss, suggests that poetry is becoming more popular and explores the art of saying the unsayable.
JIM LEHRER: And finally tonight, the new poet laureate of the United States. Jeffrey Brown talked with him recently at his home in Wilmot, New Hampshire. JEFFREY BROWN: Even a first visit to Donald Hall's New Hampshire home can have a familiar feel if you've read his poetry. His subjects are all around: outside, Mount Kearsarge, lording over the horizon; Eagle Pond, just across the way and through the woods; the gardens surrounding the house, also inspiration for his writing; inside, the painted bed which Hall shared with his poet wife, Jane Kenyon, for 20 years. When she died here, he turned to poetry. This is Hall's ancestral home. His family has owned it since the 1800s, and he spent the summers here as a boy, working the farm with his grandfather, while the older man recited "Casey at the Bat" and other poems. Hall returned here to live full-time some 30 years ago, giving up his tenured position at the University of Michigan.

Poet, former U-M instructor Donald Hall appointed Poet Laureate By Kevin Brown The appointment of Donald Hall as the Library of Congress 14th Poet Laureate sparked upbeat responses from faculty at U-M, some of whom worked with Hall when he taught here from 1957-75. "It seems everyone I've mentioned it to is simply pleased," said Keith Taylor, lecturer in English language and literature, poet, and undergraduate creative writing program coordinator. "Hall left almost universal good feelings behind him here. Hall certainly deserves it, and he is a poet who will also appreciate the honor. He has done very good work for a long time." On making the appointment, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said, "Donald Hall is one of America's most distinctive and respected literary figures. For more than 50 years he has written beautiful poetry on a wide variety of subjects that are often distinctly American and conveyed with passion." "I'm happy to be able to spend some time promoting poetry in the United States," Hall says, responding to his appointment. "I've been spending a lot of time doing it for years, but this time I have a built-in platform."
