Alex Haley Memorial
The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial commemorates the place of arrival of Alex Haley's African ancestor, Kunta Kinte, to the New World, as told in the book Roots . It is located in Annapolis, Maryland at the head of the City's harbor. This Memorial is the only memorial in the United States that commemorates the actual name and place of arrival of an enslaved African. It portrays in word and symbol Alex Haley's vision for national racial reconciliation and healing, and symbolizes in Kunta Kinte and his descendants the triumph of the human spirit in very difficult times. The Memorial includes a sculpture group of a seated Alex Haley reading from a book on his lap to three children of different ethnic backgrounds. As he stretches his hand toward the Chesapeake Bay, he tells his family's story and the story of the Annapolis port, a symbolic Ellis Island for African Americans.

"The front porch of this home is, in fact, the birthplace of Roots," said Haley. This ten-room bungalow, constructed from 1918 to 1921 by Haley's grandfather, Will E. Palmer, has been restored to model the home as it was when Haley was born. Some of the 1919 furniture which decorates the home belonged to the Haley's family. When Haley was six weeks old, his father and mother showed up, quite unexpectedly, on the front porch of this Southern home. Haley's maternal grandparents had received no correspondence with their daughter since she and her husband had gone away to college in Ithaca, New York. Imagine their surprise when they answered the knock on the door and saw their daughter, son-in-law, and a grandchild. Here, just 35 miles north of Memphis, Haley grew up under the supervision of the Palmers. His doting grandparents reared Alex in a loving, family-centered home. Many days Alex sat and listened attentively as relatives told stories about his ancestors. It was on this front porch that he heard about Kunte Kinte and Queenie. And here, in Henning, Tennessee, Haley's roots as a master storyteller began.

Alex Haley
Alex Palmer Haley was born on Aug. 11, 1921 in Ithaca, NY to Bertha George and Simon Alexander Haley.
Both were college students with Bertha studying music at The Ithaca Conservatory while her husband was working on his Masters Degree in Agriculture at nearby Cornell University.
The Tennesseans had married in a large ceremony in Henning, TN but had moved to New York to complete their studies when Bertha Haley had become pregnant. Her mother and father Will and Cynthia Palmer had become worried about their daughter when her letters stopped coming and were two days away from traveling to New York to see if they were well when the couple suddenly showed up on their front porch with the infant Alex in arms.
The grief his grandfather’s death had on his grandmother was more than the young boy could understand and the two became incredibly close to one another. Cynthia Palmer buried herself in her family and it was then that Alex began hearing stories of his grandmother’s family – the Murrays. Cynthia Palmer’s sisters and cousins would generally gather on the front porch of the house after dark and begin telling family stories that entranced the young boy and often embarrassed his mother, who would sometimes demand that they quit talking about it often saying, "I wish you all would quit talking about that old-timey slavery stuff, it’s entirely embarrassing."

Haley The Master Storyteller Whose `Roots' Ran Very Deep
By Jacqueline Trescott
The Washington Post Washington One morning last week Alex Haley stood at a government-issue lectern in an ordinary hearing room in downtown Washington and once again made you feel like you were right on the front porch in Henning, Tenn. In a deep, velvety voice Haley told the story of Queen Haley, his paternal grandmother, and described her in such lush physical and emotional detail that, once again, a Haley became part of your family. It was your grandmother dipping snuff, swatting and spitting at the lightning bugs, rocking in the pine chair and talking about old times. And, as Haley listed his various projects a miniseries on Queen, a series of interviews with black filmmakers, the long-awaited story of Henning once again you knew something of magnitude was brewing. "Queen was born near Florence, Alabama, on a plantation called the Forks of Cypress," he said. "Her father was the master and her mother a mulatto weaver. She was raised as the servant of her half-sisters. She was what they called `a child of the plantation.' " After the Civil War, Queen was freed and was chased into a forest. "There she joined three couples, and this was the first time she had ever confronted what being black was. I just can't wait to write that scene." Haley, who died early Monday in Seattle, where he had been scheduled to speak, pulled us into the drawing rooms of living history and created characters that became part of the American lexicon.

Stanley Crouch http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com IN the early 1980s, when Alex Haley, the author of "Roots," was speaking at Lincoln Center, investigative reporter Philip Nobile asked him a straightforward question. Since he had paid Harold Courlander $650,000 in a plagiarism suit, why shouldn't Haley be considered a criminal instead of a hero? Haley had no answer. Well, what would you expect from someone who had pulled off one of the biggest con jobs in U.S. literary history? Yet the "Roots" hoax has sustained itself. Every PBS station in America refused to show the 1997 BBC documentary inspired by Nobile's reporting on the book. And tonight NBC will air a retrospective on the 25th anniversary of the popular TV miniseries. There are a number of reasons the truth about "Roots" is still ignored. One is that black Americans, primarily because of the influence of Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam, became obsessed with being a "lost" people in America, people who had "no knowledge of self." Younger black people were told they were not Americans, but victims of Americanism. Their true identity, Malcolm X said, was African and Islamic. The truth had been hidden from them by the white man, who was the Devil.

Alex Haley's Roots is the monumental two-century drama of Kunta Kinte and the six generations who came after him. By tracing back his own roots, Haley tells the story of 39 million Americans of African descent. He has rediscovered for an entire people a rich cultural heritage that ultimately speaks to all races everywhere, for the story it tells is one of the most eloquent testimonials ever written to the indomitability of the human spirit.

Archives USCG Honors Author Alex Haley in Commissioning of Latest Cutter Sea Services
By RICHARD R. BURGESS
Managing Editor The Coast Guard has fulfilled a promise made two years ago to name a cutter after its first chief journalist, the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alex Haley. The former Navy salvage and rescue ship Edenton (ATS 1) has been converted into a 282-foot medium-endurance cutter and commissioned in the Coast Guard as the USCGC Alex Haley (WMEC 39). The new cutter is believed to be the first U.S. military ship named for a journalist. Haley, famed for his best-selling book Roots , served in the Coast Guard for 20 years, beginning in 1939 as a steward and retiring in 1959 as a chief journalist. Haley, who started writing as a hobby, was valued by his shipmates for his talent in "ghostwriting" love letters for them. His writing talent was recognized with an assignment to the Coast Guard's public affairs office in New York. After retiring from the Coast Guard, Haley continued his writing career and also worked to promote literacy and education. He died in 1992. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater was the keynote speaker at the 10 July commissioning ceremonies at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Md. Also in attendance were Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), Coast Guard Commandant Adm. James M. Loy, Haley's first wife Nannie Haley, his oldest son William Haley, his daughter Lydia Haley, his sister Lois Butts Haley, his brother Julius Haley, and his daughter-in-law Doris Haley (whose husband, U.S. Ambassador to Gambia George Haley, was unable to attend).
