      Biography / Criticism
      Jessica Hagedorn was born in the Philippines in 1949. Her mother's background is Scotch-Irish-French-Filipino and her father is considered Filipino-Spanish, although his great-grandmother was Chinese (Bonetti 93-95). Hagedorn considers herself a hybrid due to this assortment of nationalities (Bonetti 94). She states in Danger and Beauty , one of her first books of poems, that "[She is] a quintessential bastard. [Her] roots are dubious." Her mixed ethnic background has caused some of her readers to question her Asian identity, but Hagedorn links her identity to her "pure Filipino" Grandmother (Bonetti 95). She feels that her Grandmother's ethnicity played the largest role in shaping her imagination. Therefore, Hagedorn feels justified identifiying herself as a Filipino writer. Critics of Hagedorn also question her legitimacy because she emigrated to the United States at such a young age. However, Hagedorn makes no claim to speak for the "generic" Filipino experience (Meer 43). Her work is directly related to her own experiences as a Filipino, first in Manila, then in the United States. Hagedorn's family moved to San Francisco when she was fourteen-years-old. She was educated at the American Conservatory Theater (Bonetti 91) and speaks of her experience there as being unique: "The training combined disciplines like t'ai chi and martial arts with acting mime and fencing, all that Western physicality. I think it was quite a full education in theater arts, and we also got to work at night in ACT productions" (Berson 76). This kaleidoscope type education laid the foundation for Hagedorn's varied interests. She published her first book of poems in 1972, when she was only twenty. Hagedorn continued writing poetry;

(credit: Marion Ettlinger) Jessica Hagedorn is celebrated for her bold, energetic, and tragicomic examinations of Filipino and Filipino-American experience in a wide variety of genres, including fiction, theater, poetry, and performance art. Her work frequently centers on the lives of social outsiders living in male-dominated cultures, most of them women, many of them artists, and some of them prostitutes, drug addicts, and drag queens.
Hagedorn captured national attention with her first novel "Dogeaters" (1990), an angry tale of social injustice set in the Philippines during the corrupt and bloodthirsty reign of Fernand and Imelda Marcos. The novel was nominated for the National Book Award, and received the American Book Award of the Before Columbus Foundation. "a bizarre and memorably funny pop panorama of contemporary Filipino life. Hagedorn's energetic young go-getters amusingly bluff their way through a gaudy, scary landscape (Manila) that's equal parts MTV, Dantean Inferno and imitation America." - "USA Today" "as sharp and fast as a street boy's razor... a rich small feast of a book."

    (Full name Jessica Tarahata Hagedorn) Filipino-born American novelist, playwright, poet, short story writer, nonfiction writer, screenwriter, and editor. The following entry presents an overview of Hagedorn's career through 2003.
    INTRODUCTION
    A prominent figure in contemporary Asian American literature, Hagedorn is widely respected as a postcolonial author whose works grapple with issues of power and identity in Filipino society and among Filipino American immigrants. Using characters and situations that evoke the grittier aspects of urban street life, her works treat such themes as cultural and economic imperialism, ethnic and gender identity, violence, and political corruption. Known for blending stylistic elements from disparate literary genres—poetry, fiction, music, and performance art—Hagedorn utilizes a unique collage-like format to examine the influence of popular American culture on the development of Asian American identity. Her best known works include Dangerous Music (1975), a collection of poems and stories based on her childhood experiences in the Philippines and as a young immigrant in the United States, and

    JESSICA HAGEDORN
    When the writer Jessica Hagedorn was first approached by director Michael Greif about adapting her novel Dogeaters for the stage, she was dubious. “I could see it as a film, but for the stage? It’s so big and busy and dense,” Hagedorn recalled recently.
    Those are all accurate words to describe the novel, which was nominated for a National Book Award when it came out in 1990. A sprawling pastiche about contemporary life in the Philippines, Dogeaters bounces between two different narratives: the 1950s adolescence of Rio Gonzaga, a movie-obsessed girl from an extended upper-middle-class family, and the scrappy existence of Joey Sands, a poor young half-black male prostitute who witnesses in 1982 the assassination of a popular politician (a character not unlike Benigno Aquino). These stories are intertwined with snippets of recent Filipino history refracted through radio melodramas, news reports, and the Hollywood dreams that equally infect waiters, porn stars, generals, and beauty queens, including First Lady Imelda Marcos herself. The result is a portrait of Filipino life as a turbulent, exuberantly tacky post-colonial soap opera unraveling in the shadow of the superpowers.
    The challenges of turning the book into a play did not deter Greif. “I thought the novel told a great story,” he said in a telephone interview, “and the effect of the world of entertainment on this culture was so fascinating and alive and inherently theatrical.” He not only commissioned Hagedorn to write the play but has shepherded it from its 1998 world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in California, where Greif was artistic director at the time, through a series of developmental workshops to a full production at the Joseph Papp Public Theater, where it opens tonight.
