Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament (PGI)
In support of Frontier College In 1986, celebrated Canadian journalist, Peter Gzowski, invited some of his family and friends to an informal golf tournament on his home course at The Briars in Jackson’s Point, Ontario. When he called John O’Leary, the President of Frontier College, to say that he wanted to raise “a few bucks” for literacy it was the beginning of a long, prosperous, innovative and simple fundraising initiative. Today, the PGIs are the most successful literacy fundraising events in Canada, generating more than $10 million (net funds) and held in thirteen provinces and territories. "The PGIs bring together so much that matters to me: friends, laughter, poetry, musicall playing to make a better world. Thanks to the thousands of golfers, corporate sponsors and hardworking volunteers, the PGIs have become a network that stretches from sea to sea to, as I am proud to say, sea. We've raised millions of dollars to help people learn to read and write or just make their lives a little better. And we’re going to keep on doing it." - Peter Gzowski Peter passed away in 2002 and is missed by Canadians everywhere, but perhaps never more than those who knew him at his favourite activity, golfing for literacy. The tradition lives on.

fonds. 1960-1992. 2.3 m of textual records and graphic material. Box 1 Correspondence A - Z The Macfarlane correspondence was received in many separate "subject" files, e.g. letters dating from Macfarlane's time at the Globe and Mail were in one file, those from his Saturday Night period in another and Weekend correspondence in another location. To assist researchers in locating material, all correspondence has been listed in a single series, the only exception being internal memoranda and notes relating specifically to particular publications which have been placed in files relating to that publication and may be found following the correspondence in the Administrative series. Thus the researcher seeking to document the relationship between Peter C. Newman and Macfarlane would find the formal correspondence below under "Newman" but would need to examine the Weekend and Macleans files for other relevant material.

Remembering Peter Gzowski
Journal of Canadian Studies Spring 2002 by Bonnie Patterson We were privileged in the Trent Community to have had Peter as our friend and Chancellor. When Peter Gzowski was asked, on the day of his investiture as Chancellor of Trent University, "What does a Chancellor do?" he responded with typical humour. "I run the joint!" We were deeply honoured at Trent to have Peter run the joint. Students had the privilege of investing him into the role of Chancellor. They dressed him in his robes and celebrated with him after the ceremony. Natalie Fournier was one of those students, and she writes, "There will be a special place in my heart for both the day I swore him in as Chancellor as well as the day I received my degree. When I walked across the stage and he got up to greet me he whispered in my ear how proud he was to be a part of my special day and I will never forget those words."
