Pentagon Papers as John Grisham novel
AMY GOODMAN SYNDICATED COLUMNIST Of the Democratic presidential candidates, former Sen. Mike Gravel is probably the least recognized. His dark-horse candidacy may be the butt of jokes on the late-night comedy shows, but that doesn't faze former Pentagon analyst Daniel Ellsberg: "Here is a senator who was not afraid to look foolish. That is the fear that keeps people in line all their lives." The famed whistle-blower Ellsberg joined with Gravel this past weekend on a panel commemorating the 35th anniversary of the publication of the Pentagon Papers by the Beacon Press, a small, non-profit publisher affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association. It was this publisher that Gravel turned to in 1971, after dozens of others turned him down, to publish the 7,000 pages that Ellsberg had delivered to Gravel to put into the public record. The story of the leak of the Pentagon Papers to The New York Times is famous, but how they got published as a book, with Gravel's face on the jacket, reads like a John Grisham novel. Ellsberg was a military analyst working for the Rand Corp. in the 1960s, when he was asked to join an internal Pentagon group tasked with creating a comprehensive, secret history of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Ellsberg photocopied thousands of documents and leaked them to The New York Times, which published excerpts in June 1971.

43. The Rainmaker By John Grisham
I ve read all of john grisham s books, at least all those that have come out in paperback (grisham is not an author I buy in hardcover).

The Rainmaker by John Grisham 598 pages, Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, $7.99 Review score: *** out of ***** I've read all of John Grisham's books, at least all those that have come out in paperback (Grisham is not an author I buy in hardcover). I've even read The Pelican Brief , his worst novel, which has a silly plot and cardboard characters. With the exception of The Pelican Brief , I have found Grisham's novels enjoyable and he seems to be getting better over time. I thought that The Chamber , with its complex characters and blurred moral boundaries was excellent. Grisham's latest novel to hit paperback is The Rainmaker . The novel's central character, Rudy Baylor, a new graduate of Memphis State Law School. Memphis State is not a top law school and Rudy is a good, but not great student. Instead of a fast ticket to the upper middle class, Rudy finds that his law degree offers few employment opportunities. The job market for lawyers is bleak. In the end he is driven into association with a mob lawyer and an ambulance chaser. This is a far cry from the world of L.A. Law

(From Elliott Walker, TODAY Producer) Danger. Suspense. Brilliant lawyers. These are what John Grisham's many fans expect from his legal thrillers with the similarly punchy titles. THE FIRM. THE CLIENT. THE PELICAN BRIEF. Books that keep you up all night, nervously turning pages, seething at injustice. Now Grisham is publishing his 20th book and taking a short break from all that tension. "PLAYING FOR PIZZA" is a vacation, based in part on a real trip that Grisham took to Italy a few years ago when he was researching his novel "THE BROKER." He clearly had a great time. Now, in "PLAYING FOR PIZZA," the reader is invited to share in some of his most delicious memories which he discussed with us this morning.

Biography of John Grisham
by Sean Hosie (SHS) John Grisham, Jr. was born February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. His father was a cotton farmer who moved the family to Southaven, Mississippi in 1967. . John graduated from Southaven High School in 1973 and enrolled in Northwest Junior College, Senatobia, Mississippi. He played baseball there his freshman year. Thinking it was time to move up, the next year he transferred to Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, and tried out to play baseball there (McDavid 14). Grisham fancied himself a great baseball player and a future Hall of Famer (Grisham 1991 2), an undiscovered athlete waiting to be signed. However, at Delta State the competition was harder, and he found he could not hit a fast ball or curve ball well. He knew that pitchers were cruel when they spotted weaknesses. His roommates were restless, and since his baseball career was over anyway, John and his friends left Delta State at the end of the semester and went to

William Faulkner and John Grisham battle it out for the soul of the South's most bookish city. B Y D W I G H T G A R N E R
Illustration by Eric White OXFORD, Miss.
W hile he was alive, William Faulkner never won any popularity contests here in his adopted hometown. The locals dubbed him "Count No Count" because of his dandified aloofness and lack of a steady job. He quit his position as postmaster because, he said, he "didn't want to be at the beck and call of every son-of-a-bitch with the price of a two-cent stamp." You can still walk into J.E. Neilson's department store, on Oxford's shady town square, and find a framed copy of Faulkner's testy response to a dunning note on a long overdue bill: "If this [$10 payment] dont [sic] suit you, the only alternative I can think of is, in the old Miltonic phrase, sue and be damned." Adding insult to injury, no doubt, was the fact that many here rarely understood a word their resident Nobel Prize-winner put to paper. On the other hand, Oxford's latest literary legend, the nice-guy thriller writer John Grisham, is nearly as famous here for having been a Little League coach and a Sunday school teacher as he is for being a novelist. A little amiability goes a long way in Oxford (pop. 10,300), and Grisham's cheerful disposition might help explain why, at midnight on a memorably nasty and wind-ripped night last week, while tornadoes were chewing up mobile-home parks in nearby Arkansas, Mary R. Minor and three of her friends were huddling against the driving rain outside of Square Books, Oxford's venerable independent bookstore. "We're always the first in line for Grisham's book signings," Minor says. "We don't mind getting a little wet."

John Grisham
John Grisham (born February 8, 1955), is a former politician, retired attorney, American novelist and author best known for his works of modern legal drama. The second eldest of five siblings was born 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to Southern Baptist parents of modest means. His father worked as a construction worker and a cotton farmer. After moving frequently, the family settled in 1967 in the small town of Southaven in De Soto County, Mississippi. Encouraged by his mother, young Grisham was an avid reader, especially influenced by the work of John Steinbeck whose clarity he admired. In 1977, Grisham received a B.Sc. degree in accounting from Mississippi State University. While studying at MSU, the author began keeping a journal, a practice that would later assist in his creative endeavors. After earning his J.D. degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1981, he practiced small-town general law for nearly a decade in Southaven, where he became bored with criminal law and successful at civil law.
