Posted by Peter Lattman So the Law Blog has been dispatched to Oxford, Miss., where Law Blog colleague Paulo Prada caught up on the phone with Grisham, who was in Charlottesville, Va., where he now lives. What do you make of the indictment of Dickie Scruggs? It’s a big story. Well, because of his willingness to take on big cases he has become noted, famous, and successful as a trial lawyer and never shied away from politics. You add that together and you become a big target and people like to see a big target go down. What do you think of the charges in the indictment?

    http://www.deadlysins.com/features/grisham.html
The Sin of Pride What do these two men have in common? Not much. Certainly not in terms of talent. They share a common trade, but one used language like a farmer toiling to raise a crop from the bare earth, and one uses it the way a 15-year-old boy uses a condom. And one of them is guilty of the sin of Pride. Let's have a little side-by-side comparison, shall we? Opening of William Faulkner's "The Wild Palms": ...and the opening of John Grisham 's "The Runaway Jury": The face of Nicholas Easter was slightly hidden by a display rack filled with slim cordless phones, and he was looking not directly at the hidden camera but somewhere of to the left, perhaps at a customer, or perhaps at a counter where a group of kids hovered over the latest electronic games from Asia. Though taken from a distance of forty yards by a man dodging rather heavy mall foot traffic, the photo was clear and revealed a nice face, clean-shaven with strong features and boyish good looks. Easter was twenty-seven, they knew that for a fact. No eyeglasses. No nose ring or weird haircut. If you're a famous, fabulously-wealthy twentieth century author, it may seem there's little you can't do. Except, perhaps, write beautifully. Perhaps you're the writer of popular legal-thrillers and you come from the same tiny town in Mississippi as William Faulkner. To untalented 1990's literary blip John Grisham, it must have seemed like the stars had ordained that he follow in the footsteps of the Nobel Prize- winning author and godlike racconteur. But, with the cruelty of the powerful, the gods denied him the one thing his

His books continue to dominate the publishing landscape. When his most recent novel, The Broker Grisham has worn his success well over the years. He remains accessible, personable, and friendly. And he uses his powerful position to benefit a number of worthy causes. He endowed a visiting writer position at the University of Mississippi that attracts prestigious authors to Oxford each year. He also funded a number of fellowships so that talented students can study in the creative writing department at Ole Miss. He has built athletic fields in Mississippi and Virginia for local little leagues. And he was so affected by the devastation from Hurricane Katrina that he gave $5 million to the relief efforts. We were honored that Grisham was willing to speak with us about the legends of his publication, his work habits, and his theories of writing suspense. Slushpile Grisham:   I was driven by a story. I created this wonderful courtroom drama set in a small town in Mississippi, as seen and told through the eyes of a young attorney, like myself. My motives were pure, I was not dreaming of best-seller lists and big fat royalty checks.

John Grisham is the author of several best-selling novels of the "legal thriller" genre, including The Firm The Pelican Brief (1992) and The Client (1993). Grisham graduated from law school and set up a legal practice in Mississippi in the early '80s. His first novel, A Time to Kill (1989) did moderately well, but his second, The Firm (1991) made him a household name, thanks in large part to the $600,000 he got for the movie rights. Several of his courtroom dramas have been made into movies, including the novels The Pelican Brief The Chamber (1994) and The Rainmaker (1995). Although not the hot property he was in the '90s, Grisham's books continue to be quite popular, including The Brethren (2000) and The Summons (2002), and A Painted House (2001), one of his few books outside the thriller genre. Extra credit : The movies from his books include: The Firm (1993, starring
