"The Uncanny Stranger on Display": The Female Body in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Love Poetry (Reproduced from The South-Atlantic Review marked writing." By this she means that texts encode "a libidinal and culturalhence political, typically masculineeconomy." These predominately masculine codes of writing, she suggests, constitute "a locus where the repression of women has been perpetuated, ... often hidden or adorned with the mystifying charms of fiction" (249). Woman's body, Cixous continues, "has been more than confiscated from her, ... has been turned into the uncanny stranger on display" (250). This "uncanny stranger" has been, in fact, no stranger to me in my own reading of Renaissance love poetry. And so, I would like to define some strategies of "display" and some of the cultural assumptions that might account for the curious ways in which the female body is "confiscated" or appropriated in Renaissance verse.1 My reading of Renaissance love poetry, thus, considers some of the subtextual assumptions encoded in representations of the female body. Philip Sidney's Astrophel and Stella , Fulke Greville's Caelica , and Robert Herrick's Hesperides offer a diverse sampling of Renaissance verse, and serve to illustrate a range of rhetorical strategems for (dis)embodying female power and thus attempting to master it, textually, at least, if not sexually.

MERLIN
MERLIN, Arthur's adviser, prophet and magician, is basically the creation of Geoffrey of Monmouth , who in his twelfth-century History of the Kings of Britain The Idylls of the King , Tennyson makes him the architect of Camelot . Mark Twain, parodying Tennyson's Arthurian world, makes Merlin a villain, and in one of the illustrations to the first edition of Twain's work illustrator Dan Beard's Merlin has Tennyson's face. Numerous novels, poems and plays center around Merlin. In American literature and popular culture, Merlin is perhaps the most frequently portrayed Arthurian character.

    Fulke Greville
    Profile
    Poet, dramatist and biographer; educated at Shrewsbury School where he was a contemporary and close friend of Sir Philip Sidney . He wrote a Life of Sidney after his friend's untimely death, but it was not published until 1652. Greville was murdered by his own servant in London and his body brought back to his home at Warwick Castle - his ghost is said to haunt his old apartments to this day. Most of his literary works were published posthumously: a collection of poetry and prose in 1633 and Remains (1670) together with the Life of Sidney mentioned above. Fair Dog, Which So My Heart
        F AIR dog, which so my heart dost tear asunder,
        That my life's-blood, my bowels, overfloweth,
        Alas, what wicked rage conceal'st thou under
        These sweet enticing joys, thy forehead showeth?
        Me, whom the light-wing'd god of long hath chas'd,
        Thou hast attain'd, thou gav'st that fatal wound,
        Which my soul's peaceful innocence hath raz'd,
        And reason to her servant humor bound.
        Kill therefore in the end, and end my anguish,
        Give me my death, methinks even time upbraideth
        A fullness of the woes, wherein I languish;
        Or if thou wilt I live, then pity pleadeth
        Help out of thee, since nature hath reveal'd,
        That with thy tongue thy bitings may be heal'd.

        Which eyes make all eyes glad or sorry;
        For when you force thoughts from above,
        These overrule your force by love.

    Charles Greville was born in 1794 and became one of the finest political diarists of his time. He was an aristocrat who belonged to a younger branch of the family of the Earls of Warwick. He was educated to Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and began his career as private secretary to Earl Bathurst. From 1821 to 1859 he was Clerk to the Privy Council where his work brought him into contact with all the leading political people of the time. He was a well-known racehorse owner and something of a literary figure. Greville died in 1865. His diaries are generally known as the Greville Papers but properly are called the Journals of the Reigns of George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria
