Page 1 of 2 (16 items) Next > Sort Posts: Oldest to newest Newest to oldest Previous Next Joined on 04-05-2007 Posts 286 The Secret River by Kate Grenville Reply Quote I read Kate Grenville's previous book, The Idea of Perfection, a couple of years ago and although I enjoyed it, didn't think it outstanding. Having heard good things of The Secret River from the paper/radio, I requested a swap. I thought I'd just look at the first couple of pages when it arrived, but having started, found it impossible to put down. Like her earlier novel, the main setting is Australia, this time in the early 19th century, but this one starts in London, with the main character eventually being transported to Australia, having been reprieved from the death penalty. The novel follows his subsequent family life and career and how the life of the immigrants affects the native aboriginal population and their attitude towards them. it provides a fascinating glimpse into an aspect of early 19th century life that I was really unaware of. It appears to have been really well researched, but the information is just slipped into the story.

The scene is frontier life in the early 1800s where white settlers, mostly pardoned convicts, met Aboriginal civilisation in a clash over land, resources and culture. 'It was true the blacks had no fields or fences, and built no houses worth the name, roaming about with no thought for the morrow,' muses the author from the perspective of William Thornhill - a character based on a forebear - who is transported to NSW for stealing wood whilst working as a boatman on the Thames and is now establishing a life by the faraway Hawkesbury. 'They spent every day filling their dishes and fetching the creatures that hung from their belts. But afterwards they seemed to have plenty of time left for sitting by their fires talking and laughing and stroking the chubby limbs of their babies.' This contrasted notably with his own family who are 'up with the sun, hacking at the weeds around the corn, lugging water... Certainly no one seemed to have energy to spare for making a baby laugh.'

The Secret River - Kate Grenville The Secret River - winner of the 2006 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book, shortlistee for the 2006 Miles Franklin Award , longlistee for the Booker 2006, is a historical work of fiction set in Australia during the time when convicts of the Empire were allowed to settle in the vast empty lands revered(owned) by the native Aborigines. The novel, as this review explains, focuses on the conflict between ex-convict settlers and the Aborigines. This is a narrative whose outlines we know already: convicts transported to Sydney, eventually pardoned, encouraged to settle what seemed to be an empty continent. They didn't understand, and wouldn't have cared, that the land they were occupying was sacred to the mysterious, dark-skinned people who appeared and disappeared from the forests and seemed to them no more than naked savages. The William Thornhill born in the opening pages is clearly marked out for poverty, suffering, degradation and criminality. We've been reading this story at least since Dickens and, in contrast, say, to Sarah Waters' linguistically brilliant portrayal of the Borough in Fingersmith, there is a sense of having been here before, of marking time, of earning the rest of the novel.
