OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, the NBCC will be talking to the authors who have been long-listed for the Booker Prize. We recently tracked down Kate Grenville, author of "The Secret River," in her native Sydney.
Q : Reading The Secret River, I was struck by how the taming of the landscape, through toil and through violence, feels like a founding narrative, almost primal. Were you aware of this when you went back to the story, and if so, how did it change how you approached it? Did you ever want your characters to behave better than they did?
A
Q : You have won the Orange Prize the Commonwealth Prize . The impact of prizes has often been poo-pooed in literary communities. What have they meant for you?
A : When you miss out on prizes, you have to tell yourself (and believe) that they don't matter too much and don't reflect on the quality of your work. When you win now and again well, that's another matter. Prizes are a message that, at least for one group of judges on one particular day, your book spoke to readers the way you'd hoped it might. Prizes get literature on the front page of the newspaper what else does that? They're a warm comfort on those long dark nights of the soul when all that you've ever done seems worthless. And the money (and extra sales) give you the freedom from paid employment that lets you write the next book. With the really big prizes, one of the best aspects is that all the shortlisted books not just the winner get a good boost from the publicity so the benefits are shared around to some extent.

Shortlisted for the 2006 Man Booker Prize, the new novel by the author of The Idea of Perfection is about the early settlement of Australia from 1806 to the 1820's.
Plot Outline
William Thornhill is a boatman on the River Thames in 1806 at the opening of The Secret River . William is married to his childhood sweetheart, Sal, but life is tough for them after her father dies, for all that William is a freeman, with a boat of his own. Their first year of marriage is idyllic, crowned by the birth of a lusty, bawling son, also called William. But "In the year of the boy's second birthday, winter came early and sharp." the winters of the early 19th century were far fiercer than modern ones, houses were nowhere near as well insulated, and healthcare primitive. "in that month of the freeze, with no money coming, Thornhill's world cracked and broke." First, Mrs Middleton, Sal's mother, falls ill. When she dies, Middleton is broken, and falls ill soon after. Money for the doctors, the landlord and the funeral haemorrage from William's business, and still there is no money coming in.

I. Though I don't know much about Australia, its origin seems an irresistible tale, one that begs novelistic retelling, either as a vast metaphor or as a historical panorama. In her new book The Secret River , Kate Grenville chooses the latter approach. The story deals with the colony of New South Wales, newly home to British convict William Thornhill and his family. The resulting novel is part Robinson Crusoe , part Swiss Family Robinson , with pinch of Heart of Darkness . The main thrust of the story is domestic, i.e., how will the Thornhills make a go of it in this new land? Added to this is the (to my untraveled eyes) completely novel historical and geographic setting with its pre-modern hardship and its spiky, lush plants, as well as its simmering colonial vs. aboriginal tension. It all leads to a potent mix for these criminals spared the noose and thrown upon a blasted Edenic heath to make their own fortune. The novel begins with a brief prologue depicting the family's very first night on the island. Recently rebirthed from the hold of the ship and reunited with his wife and two children, William Thornhill can't sleep, leaves his bark-flap tent and encounters a threateningly calm native. Thornhill shouts at him impotently. Nothing happens, but the gears of the plot are in motion. We know that by the end of this book there will be a showdown, Western-style, between the convict colonizers and the natives.

INTRODUCTION Australian novelist Kate Grenville has won praise from readers and critics alike for her acute psychological portraits and her genius for portraying states of human feeling. In The Idea of Perfection , Grenville, winner of Britain's prestigious Orange Prize, brings her discerning knowledge of human strengths and frailties to bear upon a pair of unlikely soul mates. In the process, she offers an unforgettable study of the fragile structures of emotion that may either connect us to others or collapse without warning. The Idea of Perfection Harley Savage, a tall, unfashionable woman with a love of folk artifacts, has come to Karakarook to help establish a heritage museum. Douglas Cheeseman, a large-eared, socially maladroit engineer, has been sent to supervise the demolition of Bent Bridge. Like the bridge, both have survived potentially crushing blows. He has been divorced. She has been divorced twice and, in a most devastating fashion, lost a third husband to suicide. Thus far, like the bridge, they have been bent but not broken, but their futures are very much in doubt. Meanwhile, a self-absorbed ex-model named Felicity Porcelline struggles to fend off middle age as she flirts with a Chinese butcher whose ethnic background both disturbs and intrigues her.

This historical novel is set at the end of the eighteenth century and tells the story of William Thornhill who is sentenced in London to the penal colony of New South Wales, Australia.
The Secret River
In this book that was listed for the Man Booker Prize, Kate Grenville explores the themes of nakedness and concealment, scars and secrets. The title of the book suggests there might be a river that is deeper and more secluded than the Hawkesbury cutting through Australia, upon which navigation is extremely difficult.
