Summary:
Kate Grenville
talks to Ramona Koval about her latest, and much anticipated, new novel The Secret River . This is a tale that seeks to gain a new vantage point from which to view Australia's European settlement. It's a story of ordinary people, inter-cultural incoherence and dreadful inevitabilities.
Details or Transcript: Ramona Koval : This week, a conversation with Kate Grenville, whose new long-awaited novel, The Secret River , has been well worth waiting for. Kate’s last novel was The Idea of Perfection , a love story about two shy and not conventionally attractive people in a small town, and it won for her the Orange Prize for Fiction in the UK. It was a long-time best-seller in Australia and the UK, and was published to acclaim in the USA. A film adaptation of the novel is currently being made. The Secret River is a very different book. It’s an historical novel set in the early years of the settlement of NSW, and follows the life and times of William Thornhill, who was sentenced in 1806 to be transported to NSW for the term of his natural life. With his wife and children, he eventually takes up land on the Hawkesbury River, and it’s this phrase, ‘takes up land’, that Kate Grenville examines, because it’s a phrase that doesn’t instantly invoke the risk and bloodshed that actually happened. It’s a wonderful and disturbing novel, full of detail about life and work in the colony of NSW, and daring descriptions of the land and the strangeness of the encounters between black and white people. And when Kate Grenville spoke to me recently, I asked her to read from

Kate Grenville was born in Sydney, Australia in October 1950. Grenville's The Secret River, which has already won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, was shortlisted for the 2006 Booker prize. Grenville has had accolades before - most notably, The Idea of Perfection won the Orange Prize for Fiction. Kate Grenville worked and studied in Europe and the USA for several years, although she now lives in her native Sydney. Grenville studied English literature at the University of Sydney but went into the film industry in 1972 and worked her way up to be an editor. However, travelling through Europe, Kate Grenville stopped in Paris, and, in her own words , wrote two "appalling, atrocious novels" in six months. Back in Australia, Kate Grenville was earning money editing copy part-time whilst writing Lilian's Story in her spare time. Lilian's Story was later made into a film starring Ruth Cracknell, Toni Collette and Barry Otto. Kate Grenville's other works include Dark Places (which tells the same story as Lilian's Story but from the perspective of Lilian's father), Joan Makes History, and Dreamhouse (which was adaped into the film Traps, starring Jacqueline MacKenzie). When Kate Grenville was teaching writing to adults at the University of Sydney, she produced two factual book: The Writing Book; and with Sue Woolfe, she edited Making Stories: How Ten Australian Novels Were Written.

The Idea of Perfection by Kate Grenville, Pan MacMillan Australia, ISBN 0-330-36206-2
By Gabriela Notaras 15 April 2002 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Kate Grenville is a critically acclaimed Australian novelist who briefly worked in the film industry before taking up writing seriously in the late 1970s. Most of her books attempt to explore inequality between the sexes in relationships, family life and society in general. Bearded Ladies: Stories Dreamhouse Joan Makes History: A Novel (1988) and Dark Places Her latest book, The Idea of Perfection Savage is a tall, bulky and reserved middle-aged woman. Married three times and with three adult children, she works in textiles and has been commissioned to help establish the Pioneer Heritage Museum in Karakarook. The old mining town has virtually no industry, except for a few barely surviving small local businesses. The aim is to establish the museum as a major tourist attraction in order to save the town from financial ruin. Douglas is attracted to Harley and begins a clumsy but sincere effort to ingratiate himself with her. Harley is psychologically scarred from previous marriages and reluctant to become involved. A relationship of sorts develops until Harley brusquely calls it off when she realises they have become the talk of the small town. Several incidents occur, however, which draw them back together.

The Novelist as Barbarian
Many creative writers have used historical material in their work. Kate Grenville reflects on her own use of such material and on issues which this has raised. How important is historical accuracy to the creative process?
When Jill Roe said of history "Getting it right means you can’t make it up", it was a reminder to novelists like me that, although we might use history, we also have to respect it. It’s all very well to play fast and loose with historical truths, but there comes a point when you have to get it right, or try to at least. As a novelist, my relationship to history has always been pretty much the same relationship the Goths had to Rome. ( Wait - was it Rome? Was it Goths?) History for a greedy novelist like me is just one more place to pillage. What we’re after, of course, is stories, and we know that history is bulging with beauties. Having found them, we then proceed to fiddle with them to make them the way we want them to be, rather than the way they really were. We get it wrong, willfully and knowingly. But perhaps you could say that the very flagrency of our "getting it wrong" points to the fact that all stories even the history "story" are made. They have an agenda, even if it’s an unconscious one. Perhaps there are many ways to get it right.

Meeting Kate Grenville and Tim Winton
Overdue blog on my meeting with the Australian authors Tim Winton and Kate Grenville last week. Have to write the profiles now so thought I’d blog on it first and then structure/formalise it for the magazine.
Winton and Grenville – along with a third author, Peter Goldsworthy - were in town as part of a literary tour; since we only had space for two profiles I had to choose, and Goldsworthy drew the short straw. The interviews were being held at the Imperial and my appointment was scheduled alongside that of at least three other journos (each with their own photographers) – which meant there was much chaos in the Imperial’s stately corridors. I went for the appo feeling sorry for myself much of the joy of reading vanishes when one has to speed-read books because of deadline constraints – but watching the three Aussies being shepherded hither and thither by hassled Penguin Books staff ("Tim! The HT reporter needs 15 minutes to ask you what it’s like to not live in Sydney, after which the Week photographer wants you beaming by the deckchairs." "Oilright, mate!"), I reflected that authors don’t exactly have it easy.

Photo: Roberta Parkin If Kate Grenville wins the Man Booker Prize tonight for her novel The Secret River , she might reflect on how London has shaped her life. In May she went to London to visit the Queen after winning the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for The Secret River . Having practised her curtsey, the Sydney writer arrived at Buckingham Palace expecting "20 minutes of strained platitudes." She was surprised. "On the contrary, we plunged into a really interesting conversation about Aboriginal people in Australia at the moment," says Grenville. The Queen showed herself to be shrewd, informed and concerned. She also asked what Grenville thought were sharp questions about Aborigines in the Sydney area at the time of white settlement, a central theme of
