edit Biography
Julien Green was born to American parents in Paris , a descendant on his mother's side of a Confederate Senator, Julian Hartridge (1829–1879), who later served as a Democratic Representative from Georgia to the US Congress, and who was Julien Green's namesake. (Green was christened "Julian", the spelling was changed by his French publisher in the 1920s to "Julien.") Born into a Protestant family, he converted to Catholicism in 1916. The next year, at the age of 16, he volunteered his services as an ambulanceman in the American Field Service . When his age was discovered his enlistment was annulled. He immediately signed up with an ambulance unit of the American Red Cross, and when that six-month term of service ended in 1918, he enlisted in the French Army, in which he served as a second lieutenant of artillery until 1919. He was educated at the

ABC OF READING
Tuesday, December 25, 2007
JULIEN GRACQ, GLENWAY WESCOTT, JULIAN GREEN, WILLIAM MAXWELL
The news arrives of the death of Julien Gracq.
If you were reading the New York Times you learned nothing of who this man was and why- for those who read- it is a very sad moment and also a moment when it can finally be said that all the "old ones" are now dead.
(A very good obituary by the translator James Kirkup can be found in The Independent newspaper from London. The last line, "HE and his work are lessons to our expiring humanity."
We living in the present- those of us who claim to write- are now all alone.
Julian Gracq has now finally joined Ernst Junger, Julian Green, Francis Stuart, Glenway Wescott, E. M. Cioran, Edward Dahlberg, Nina Berberova, Jorge Luis Borges and- I would add personally though I well know she does not rank in this listing- Hannah Green, though with her THE DEAD OF THE HOUSE, if she had lived longer and been able to finish her second book, might have been comfortably installed within this group.
To have known these writers, to have read them, to have talked with them, to have seen them is to have been given the gift of participating in literature, in writing and reading as it once was and is now no longer so.

Julien (Hartridge) Green (1900-1998) "For a person of nervous temperament, the monotony of the scene is a trial, almost a torture. And so it is that people on board ship turn, as if toward their salvation, to the company of their fellows, even if they have contempt for them, even if they hate them. For they have to live, they have to escape from the consuming boredom of the days, from the sea, and from that leviathan, ever lying in wait, which silently accompanies them." (from the short story 'Leviathan' Julien Green was born in Paris to American parents of Scottish-Irish background. The last of seven children, five of them girls, and only native French speaker in his English-speaking family, he created his own private world, in which he brought for his mother's horror sex, and his own obsessions on ancestral mysteries. After his mother's death in 1914, Green followed his father into the Catholic Church. At the age of 17 he volunteered for the army in the World War I. From 1918 to 1922 he studied in Paris and at the University of Virginia. In 1922 Green moved back to France, and joined the literary scene. His first novel

Julien Green: Engagement and Exile
Julien Green lived in two worlds almost from birth. His parents were Americans from established Southern families and had been permanent residents of France for five years by 1900 when he was born in Paris. He was the only member of his family who learned French before he learned English. At one point when he was a schoolboy attending the lycée Janson-de-Sailly, his family lived just across the rue de la Pompe from the school. He described the rue de la Pompe as "my Atlantic Ocean;" at home he heard nothing but English, at school nothing but French. His two linguistic worlds were mirrored by other separated worlds. The Civil War was a tragedy that marked his parents' imagination for life, and his mother's stories about the war marked his own imagination. When Julien Green as a schoolboy attempted to explain his nationality, one of his French friends offered this summary, "So you belong to a nation that no longer exists." ["En somme, tu appartiens à une nation qui n'existe plus," Le Monde, 19 août 1998, page 16] I don't think Julien Green ever accepted the idea that the ante-bellum South, even the Confederacy, no longer existed. They existed, but they were not accessible to people around him. The feeling that he lived in one world, the accessible everyday world, while being anchored deeply in another world, the far country (les pays lointains), as he called it in one of his titles reflected a temperament for exile. He would live in two worlds all his life, one of those worlds would be accessible to others, one accessible only to the extent that he made it so himself.
