Born in Brooklyn New York , Green's early ambition was to write romantic verse, and she corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson . When her poetry failed to gain recognition, she produced her first and best known novel, The Leavenworth Case (1878). She became a bestselling author, eventually publishing about 40 books. Green was in some ways a progressive woman for her time—succeeding in a genre dominated by male writers—but she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and she was opposed to women's suffrage Green married the actor , and later designer and artist, Charles Rohlfs on November 25 . by Anna Katharine Green Anna Katharine Green was one of the first female mystery writers to publish under her own name. She was never very successful as an author, but the technical excellence of her books caused several law schools to use The Leavenworth Case as a textbook in some of their classes, as an example of how misleading circumstantial evidence can be.

ANNA KATHARINE GREEN 1846-1935
Described as diminuitive, shy, and introverted and earning more than her husband throughout their marriage, Green held traditional values, preferring Victorian-style clothing and opposing the actions of the women sufferagists. She was strongly religious and a concern for moral strength and respect for divine providence permeate her work. Throughout her career she worked daily on her writing while also tending the garden, the house, and participating actively in church and community affairs. Her knowledge of the law and forensic police procedure came from her father, James Wilson Green, who was the well-known trial lawyer and his friends who were criminal attorneys, judges, and chiefs of police. As a child Green was often in their company as they discussed cases. Green enjoyed almost 25 years as a bestselling author. Her popularity began to decline in the early twentieth century when language became more less formal and more colloquial and direct.

Anna Katharine Green (November 11, 1846 in Brooklyn, New York – April 11, 1935 in Buffalo) was an American author. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories (no doubt assisted by her lawyer father). Her most famous book, The Leavenworth Case (1878) was actually written only after her poetry failed to gain recognition. Green's first passion was to write romantic verse. She even corresponded with Ralph Waldo Emerson. When her poetry was ignored, she wrote a novel. This made her famous overnight. Anna Katharine Green was a very progressive woman for her time. In a world of man's literature, she managed to not only get published, but also to become a bestselling authoress. Yet, she did not approve of many of her contemporary feminists. She did not even believe women should get the vote. She gained fame for her well thought out plots, but was not always appreciated for her Victorian era characters and dialogue.
