Learning Journeys Alasdair Gray Biography Describing himself as a ‘maker of imagined objects,’ Alasdair Gray has been a prolific producer of novels, short stories, plays, poems, pamphlets and literary criticism. He is also an accomplished artist who has painted remarkable murals and is the designer and illustrator of his own books and those of other writers. Alasdair James Gray was born on 28 December 1934. At the age of five he was evacuated to Lanarkshire along with his mother and younger sister before being reunited with his father in Wetherby, Yorkshire, in 1941. After the war the family returned to Glasgow where Gray attended Whitehill Senior Secondary School. As a teenager Gray wrote a version of one of Aesop’s fables which he read, along with some poems, on a BBC children’s programme. At the same time he was writing and drawing pieces which appeared in the Whitehill School Magazine. After leaving school Gray studied at Glasgow School of Art where he specialised in murals. His experiences as a child and young adult in Glasgow would later form the basis for books One and Two of Lanark , his first and still his best known novel.

Gray, Alasdair (James)
0.04 sec. write_ads(AdsNum, 0)
Scottish novelist and short-story writer. Lanark (1981), begun when he was 18, is an inventive expression of nationalist and anti-nationalist feeling, brimful of literary jokes. 1982, Janine (1984) and Something Leather (1990) are in much the same vein. Poor Things (1992), illustrated by himself, presents aspects of Glasgow social history, while A History Maker (1994) looks forward to a bizarre future. hut(1)

Poor Things
Alasdair Gray
Bloomsbury 1992 A book review by Danny Yee The largest part of Poor Things is Episodes from the Early Life of a Scottish Public Health Officer , the memoirs of one Archibald McCandless. This describes how he befriends the deformed Godwin Baxter in medical school, and how Baxter takes a drowned woman and replaces her brain with that of her unborn daughter. Educated by Godwin to be his companion, Bella Baxter engages to marry McCandless instead, and then elopes with the rake Duncan Wedderburn. As revealed through their letters, the innocent, inquisitive and confident Bella drives Wedderburn to madness and to God, while she furthers her education with the help of an American missionary doctor, a cynical English businessman, and a Parisian prostitute. Her return to Britain precipitates a confrontation with her first husband. McCandless' story is followed by a letter from his widow, written after his death in 1914. She presents a rather different version of events, and an acerbic critique of his tale: "My second husband's story positively stinks of all that was morbid in that most morbid of centuries, the nineteenth. He has made a sufficiently strange story stranger still by stirring into it episodes and phrases to be found in Hogg's Suicide's Grave with additional ghouleries from the works of Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe. What morbid Victorian fantasy has he NOT filched from? I find traces of The Coming Race, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dracula, Trilby, Rider Haggard's She, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes and, alas, Alice Through the Looking-Glass; a gloomier book than the sunlit Alice in Wonderland. He has even plagiarized work by two very dear friends: G. B. Shaw's Pygmalion and the scientific romances of Herbert George Wells."

Glasgow: Pat's Guide to the West End: Alasdair Gray, Writer and Artist
Good to see Alasdair's talent being utilised at Oranmor - due to open June, 2004. (17th April, 2004). Alasdair Gray has an impressive record or achievement in the world of literature. Since the arrival of his first novel 'Lanark' in 1981 he has been recognised as an important and accomplished writer by the literary world and has continued to produce highly acclaimed works. In 1992 'Poor Things' received both the Guardian Fiction Prize and the Whitbread Prize and, the long awaited, 'The Book of Prefaces' looks set to be a classic. 'it is a book that should be on the shelf of anyone interested in English literature, language and history'. (The Complete Review) Personally, I am particularly impressed by the fact that the erudite Philip Hobsbaum, the English lecturer, who struck awe into me as a first year student at Glasgow University, is a big fan of Gray and very appreciative of his talents. Paul Currie, John Smith's Bookshops, whom I mention often on the Web site, is Alasdair's walking buddy and he suggested Alasdair as a prime candidate for inclusion in our West End Characters Section. (Paul's face can be seen in the book 'Poor Things' - he was Alasdair's model for McCandless). Before meeting Alasdair formally to talk about creating this page I had often seen out and about in the West End accompanied by his partner Morag McAlpine. I'd spotted him often in the Chip - infamous haunt of Glasgow writers, actors, university lecturers and the like. More often than not he was besplattered in paint and looking very much like your archetypal absent minded professor - though maybe more artist than academic.

article 021122 "We are all murderers and prostitutes:" R.D. Laing and the work of Alasdair Gray. by Gavin Miller
The work of the contemporary Scottish author Alasdair Gray is particularly amenable to psychoanalytic interpretation. However, the Reichean reading which Gray's texts explicitly invite is too narrow. The ideas of Gray's fellow countryman, R.D. Laing, provide a fuller interpretation. In particular, Laing's theories clarify Gray's favoured character type. Divided selves such as the protagonists of Lanark and 1982 Janine project imaginary others in a futile inner existence, leaving behind only their bodies to transact with everyday life. Laing's writings also explain Gray's use of fantasy. In Gray's work, fantasy does not merely represent desired (but forbidden) states of affairs. Rather, like those neurotic and psychotic fantasies analysed by Laing, Gray's bizarre inner and outer worlds convey also, in a distorted form, existential realities overlooked by everyday conceptions of human life.
