Please click here if you would be interested to attend this conference and like to receive information about it from time to time, via e-mail. London Conference: 'The Poetry of Robert Graves' This successful two-day conference on the poetry of Robert Graves took place at the University of London's Institute of English Studies http://ies.sas.ac.uk/events/conferences/2007/Graves/index.htm , 5 - 6 July 2007. The aim of the conference was ‘to make a significant contribution towards a wider academic and critical recognition of Graves’s poetic achievement’. The opening address was given by the celebrated scholar and critic Christopher Ricks, Warren Professor of the Humanities at Boston University, and Robert Graves’s successor as Professor of Poetry at Oxford. W. H. Auden once called Christopher Ricks ‘the kind of critic every poet dreams of finding’. He has published innovative books on, among others, Milton, Keats, Tennyson, T. S. Eliot and Beckett. ‘Ricks has been described as holding in his head all of English poetry,’ wrote Nicholas Wroe in a Guardian profile, ‘and to see him lecture is to see him repeatedly reach into this apparently infinite database for the most subtle and apposite comparisons, echoes and rebuttals. It is a dazzlingly impressive gift’.

Updated - Saturday, 11 August, 2001 Robert Graves (1895-1985), was born in Wimbledon in July 1895. A poet, novelist, critic and classical scholar, he published over 120 volumes encompassing a wide variety of fields, including historical fiction, mythology, poetry - and a classic memoir of the First World War, Good-bye To All That Graves began to write poetry whilst a student at London's Charterhouse School, an interest continued throughout his life and most notably during his wartime service. In 1916-17 alone he published three volumes of verse. Following the war, in which he was seriously wounded in 1916 whilst serving with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and the publication of his highly successful memoir (which caused a rift between Graves and Siegfried Sassoon ), Graves spent a period teaching in Cairo. Following this Graves settled in Majorca, continuing his writing career with such successful titles as I, Claudius and Claudius The God (both 1934), later successfully dramatised by the BBC. Graves was elected professor of poetry at Oxford University in 1961, where he remained until 1966.

Robert James Graves
Irish physician, born March 27, 1797, Dublin; died March 20, 1853, Dublin.
Associated eponyms: Basedow's syndrome or disease A disorder characterized by a triad of hyperthyroidism, goiter, and exophthalmos (bulging eyeballs). Biography: Robert James Graves was one of the leaders of the Irish, or Dublin school of diagnosis, which emphasised clinical observation of patients. He was the son of a clergyman. He received his degree from the University of Dublin in 1818 after a brilliant undergraduate career. After studying in London, Berlin, Göttingen, Hamburg and Copenhagen, he returned to Dublin in 1821 and set up a medical practice, becoming chief physician at Meath Hospital. He was also physician at the County of Dublin Infirmary and the Hospital for incurables. At Meath in Dublin Graves also taught clinical medicine, introducing reforms of medical training that he had witnessed on his travels. This included, among other things, bedside teaching, a major novelty in a country where medical teaching had been ex cathedra only. Graves assigned to advanced students the responsibility for diagnosis and treatment of ward patients, under the supervision of the faculty. One of his students was William Stokes (1804-1878), who soon became his collaborator. Another student of his was Richard Townsend, who obtained his doctorate at Edinburgh in 1824.

The White Goddess The path by which I arrived at Robert Graves' The White Goddess is interesting: A visitor to my website recommended John Montague's poetry, especially his collection, A Rough Field . My library didn't have that one but did have another: About Love . I liked a number of the poems and was especially taken by his translation of Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill's "Blodewedd" . I was curious about the title. One of the hits I found for "Blodewedd" on the Web described her as the White Goddess, subject of Robert Graves' book by the same title. I was vaguely aware of this book but had never read it. I found the Foreword and parts of the first chapter entrancing but was disappointed by what followed (too esoteric, too complicated). I was about to give up when I arrived at Chapter 22 ("The Triple Muse") where the promise of the Foreword began to be fulfilled. Graves' thesis is just as startling and bold and bald today as it (no doubt) was in 1948: "...a true poem is necessarily an invocation of the White Goddess, or Muse, the Mother of All Living, the ancient power of fright and lust.... [p. 10] ...The function of poetry is religious invocation of the Muse; its use is the experience of mixed exaltation and horror that her presence excites. [p. xii] [Note: the page references are to the 1948 edition.] My thesis is that the language of poetic myth anciently current in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe was a magical language bound up with popular religious ceremonies in honour of the Moon-goddess, or Muse, some of them dating from the Old Stone Age, and that this remains the language of true poetry... Robert Graves was one of the poets originally solicited by Charles Abbott. When a donation by Mrs. Mildred Lockwood Lacey in 1960 made it possible to acquire the manuscript of all Graves' books of poetry and some works in prose published from 1911 until 1955, this extensive archive augmented and extended the collection of British first editions already in The Poetry Collection. There are over 275 publications in the Graves Collection, excluding anthologies, periodical appearances and broadsides. The scarce early pamphlets, Over the Brazier Fairies and Fusiliers (1917), and Treasure Box (1919), are represented in the collection along with a signed and numbered copy of The Marmosite's Miscellany (1925)which Graves wrote under the name of John Doylethe first and second states of Good-bye To All That Poems 1926-1930 (1931), and

By Miranda Syemour Chapter One Side by side they stand, this very proper Victorian couple on their honeymoon in Munich in 1891. She is Amalia, or Amy, von Ranke, aged thirty-four, the oldest daughter of a German professor of medicine. He is Alfred Perceval Graves, aged forty-five, the second son of the Irish Bishop of Limerick. Her mother is the Norwegian daughter of the Greenwich astronomer Ludwig Tiarks. His mother is a Cheyne, a Scot from a family tracing its line back to the times of Robert the Bruce. The Graves family and the von Rankes are alike in being industrious, religious and altruistic. The Graveses are superstitious, poetic and quick-witted; they excel in word games, anagrams, puzzles and rhymes. Alfred's father, a brilliant anagrammatist, is also a leading authority on the ancient Irish alphabet called Ogham, which demonstrates his skill at deciphering codes. The Graves family is also famously absent-minded, careless about finishing sentences and ferociously competitive. Several family members have had nervous breakdowns. The von Rankes are more disciplined and political. Amy's father started out as a rebellious student who participated in the 1848 risings in Prussia and ended by working to improve the diet and living conditions of the Munich poor. Her great-uncle Leopold, who brought the dignifying 'von' into their family, was one of Germany's greatest historians, the man who wrote that he wanted to see things as they really are 'wie es eigentlich war'. His marriage to Clarissa Graves, Alfred's aunt, united the two families in the 1840s.

Herrick used to address his poems to Julia - so we'll call her Julia, if you like. I used the name back in the early Sixties. You can't write poems unless you're in love with someone, but you don't mention the name, because it's bad manners. There are very often poems of good-bye which are very painful. They are a goodbye to love, while love is still very much in your mind-horrible.

    Goodbye to All That
    Robert Graves
Penguin 1960 A book review by Danny Yee Written in 1929 when Robert Graves was only 33, Goodbye to All That can hardly be described as a full autobiography; the reader after an account of Graves' later life and the background to his historical novels must look elsewhere. It begins with an account of his English public school education and concludes with a description of the post-war years (including a stint teaching in Cairo), but the bulk of the autobiography deals with Graves' service in the army during the First World War. This must rank as one of the most outstanding first-hand accounts of that war in English; while it lacks the moral vision of some of his compatriots' poetry (Graves was a friend of Siegfried Sassoon and knew Wilfred Owen), Graves' insight into the psychology of life in the trenches is unsurpassed. Also notable are his descriptions of, and relationships with, other notable people, from the climber George Mallory to T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy. Goodbye to All That should be read by anyone interested in the personal side of the First World War, as well as by those interested in Robert Graves himself. It is also a "rattling good yarn" (it is as readable as any of his novels), complete with entertaining anecdotes, so it should have widespread appeal.

Robert von Ranke Graves was born in Wimbledon, London. His father was Irish and his mother German (the von Ranke name was to cause suspicion among some of his fellow soldiers that he was a German spy). He volunteered for active service at the outbreak of the First World War, aged 19, and went on to serve as a Captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, alongside Siegfried Sassoon , his closest friend during the war years. He was badly wounded at the Somme, and reported dead on his 21st birthday, though recovered enough to return to the front a few months later. He suffered from shell shock, or neurasthenia, for many years after the war and continued to be haunted by traumatic memories of the war until old age. Goodbye To All That (1929) is the most compelling and enduring contemporary prose account of the First World War. From 1929 he spent most of his life in Spain, and became one of the leading literary figures of the age. He was Professor of Poetry at Oxford University in the 1960s. His novels include I, Claudius, King Jesus and The Golden Fleece, and his writings on myth include The White Goddess and The Greek Myths. Owen Sassoon Like Sassoon and others, Graves wrote poetry that challenged unthinking attitudes to the war, but he also appeared to use his poetry to protect himself from being overwhelmed by war, in writing about situations and images that were emblematic of peace. Most of the poems he wrote in 1917 were not about the horrors of trench life, but about childhood innocence and the English countryside.

Hartmut Ihnenfeldt Robert Graves Laura Riding because of some problems of a private order and following the advice of the influential poetess and critic Gertrude Stein , settled in Majorca. Here, this creator, who conceived of himself as a poet, wrote his most important prosaic works, including his historical novels about Claudio, with the rights of which, he could live a tailor-made lifestyle in the still "very much cheap" Majorca of the past. There is no doubt that, Ava Gardner But Graves' powerful appeal also captured Alec Guinness Peter Ustinov and young Stephen Hawking , who was only ten years old, his mother, and a friend from the University called Beryl, who became Graves second wife. He was later awarded the Nobel Prize, and remains in the memory of the Graves family thanks to his eccentric sense of humour. One day, to everyone's surprise, he threw a stink bomb under the sofa and the living room could not be inhabited for some time. In her memoirs Ava My story, Ava Gardner (see photo) drew an extraordinarily positive biographical sketch of her admirer Robert, who dedicated some of his poems to her, which naturally filled the actress with enormous pride. The White Goddess by Robert Graves
The White Goddess is a key book for modern Pagans and Wiccans. Subtitled 'A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth', Robert Graves investigates the links between poetry, mythology and the worship of the Goddess. The White Goddess had a profound influence on Gerald Gardner, the modern reinventor of Paganism. The White Goddess was one of the first widely available books which uncompromisingly advocated a Goddess-centered spirituality. It builds on Frazier's Golden Bough , but written from the point of view of a working poet struggling to reconcile the ancient crafts of poetry and mythology with the brutality of the twentieth century. Although it is a 'difficult book' it will also prove very rewarding. It does not provide details of ancient rituals or try to reinvent them for a modern context; rather it gives details on the profound links between ancient runic alphabets, mysterious (and previously unexplained) Drudic and Bardic poetry and the Celtic lunar year. It bears the same relation to more practical books about Wicca as a theoretical physics textbook does to a users' manual for a computer. Reading the White Goddess will enhance your understanding of Wicca by giving you deep background on the craft.
