MILLER, ROBERT BYRON (1825-1902), lawyer and politician, and GRANVILLE GEORGE (1847-1910), judge, were born in London, the eldest and youngest of four sons of Robert Miller and his wife Jane Matilde, n©e Montmorini. Their father had entered Trinity College, Dublin (B.A., 1822; M.A., 1827), and was called to the Bar of the Middle Temple on 10 November 1826; he practised on the Midland circuit, became serjeant-at-law on 7 November 1850 and from January 1856 was a circuit judge in Leicester and Rutland until he died on 5 August 1876. Robert was born on 19 April 1825 and educated at private schools and King's College, London. He was trained in his father's chambers, admitted to the Middle Temple in 1843 and called to the Bar on 28 January 1848. After practising in London he decided to migrate, arrived at Hobart Town in January 1855 and was admitted a barrister in the Supreme Court of Tasmania. On 11 April he married Emily, daughter of George Berkeley Harrison of London. They settled in Launceston where Miller was a partner of

Consists of correspondence of Gladstone (and related persons) collected by Edward and Maude Ottley. In addition to letters by prominent government officials and statesmen, a number of literary and artistic figures are represented, including Robert Browning, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Samuel Langhorne Clemens ("Mark Twain"), Charles Lutwidge Dodgson ("Lewis Carroll"), Kate Greenaway, Joseph Joachim, Andrew Lang, James Russell Lowell, Robert Bulwer Lytton, George MacDonald, Sir John Everett Millais, Anne Thackeray Ritchie, John Ruskin, George Augustus Sala, Anthony Trollope, Mrs. Humphry Ward, and Charlotte M. Yonge. Range of Collection Dates
Size: 0.8 linear ft. (2 archival boxes) Provenance : Purchased in 2002 with support from the Richard M. Ludwig Endowment Fund, established in 2001 by Michael Spence, Class of 1966, and Monica Spence. The letters were once all mounted in two albums, one with the initials of Edward Ottley, the other with those of his wifeit seemed necessary to dismount them all, to prevent further damage from acid in the paper and in the very solid glue with which they were fixed to the leaves.     The Strathmore Cousins
    before I knew that my colleague Margaret Weatherford was planning to look at the Queen’s cousins in her most recent posting. We are a group of independent columnists here, geographically scattered, and none of us knows what the others have in the works. Margaret did a grand job, but I’m not simply jumping on a bandwagon. The genesis of this column is actually the result of my running across a booklet on Glamis Castle while doing the autumnal housecleaning, and it spurred me to look a bit further into the question of the Queen’s maternal relations. And I must admit to having been pleased to get a clearer picture of this part of H.M.’s extended family. As is well known, the late Queen Mother was born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on August 4, 1900. She was the daughter of Claude, 14 th Earl of Strathmore, and his wife Nina Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck. They were a couple in whom old Scots’ bloodlines joined old English bloodlines, with a significant dollop of noble – even royal – Irish and Welsh DNA to add spice and flavor. The Queen Mum even managed to be a many-times-removed grandniece (by marriage) of the Scots’ Reformer John Knox, whose first wife was a Bowes. More importantly, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was a 19 th -generation descendant of King Robert II, the first Stewart King of Scots who was a grandson of Robert the Bruce. (That makes H.M. the Queen Bruce’s 20xg-granddaughter.) This occurred via the marriage of Robert II’s daughter Joanna to Sir John Lyon in the 14
