Reviewed by: navaira zia on July 26, 2005 An excellent story about true friendship, loyalty and how four friends manage to handle each and every situation. Mole is my favourite character in the story because he handles and solves situations. Toad was not sensible, rich but show off and a little careless. The story also includes Badger and Water Rat. It ends when there is a battle in toad hall.

    Kenneth Grahame
Kenneth Grahame was born in Edinburgh as the son of a lawyer from an old Scottish family. Due to the alcoholism of his father, Grahame was brought up by elderly relatives. In the early years he lived with his family in the Western highlands. When his mother died of scarlet fever, the children were sent to live with their maternal grandmother in the village of Cookham Dene, the chief setting of The Wind in the Willows. Grahame was educated at St. Edward's School, Oxford, and in 1879 he entered the Bank Of England. While pursuing his career at the bank, Grahame began composing light nonfiction pieces as a pastime He contributed articles to such journals as the St. James Gazette, W.E. Henley's National Observer and The Yellow Book. Grahame's stories about a group of orphaned children were published in PAGAN PAPERS (1893). In 1895 appeared THE GOLDEN AGE, a collection of sketches from his published works. It was followed by DREAM DAYS in 1898, which included Grahame's most famous short story, 'The Reluctant Dragon'. All the Dragon wants is to be left alone, but the villagers want it dead. Thanks to a wise child, the Dragon manages to trick the Establishment and keep its life. Grahame was appointed as the secretary at the Bank and in 1899 he married Elspeth Thomson, who snobbish attitudes Grahame did not share. Living in a disastrous marriage, Grahame wrote parts of The Wind in the Willows originally in a letter form to his young son Alistair. The book appeared in 1908 and reflected the author's unhappiness in the real world. The main tale tells how Toad's obsession with motorcars leads him into imprisonment, from which he escapes into the Wild Woods abd with the help of his campanions regains Toad Hall from Untermenschen stoats.

Born in 1859, his mother died when he was five and he was brought up by his grandmother. He desperately wanted to attend Oxford University but lack of funds meant he took a job at the Bank of England.
Grahame first came to Fowey in 1899, staying at the Fowey Hotel whilst convalescing from pneumonia. Here he became friends with Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (Q), who introduced him to life in Fowey, he also married Elspeth Thompson in St Fimbarrus Church in the same year. Although the marriage was a somewhat unhappy one their only child Alaistair was born in 1900. Alaistair, who was blind in one eye, was doted on by his parents and affectionately known as Mouse.
Throughout his marriage Grahame often sought refuge in Fowey spending much time with Q and on the river. It was during these visits that he wrote to Mouse with his tales of the river bank, these letters (written on the letterhead paper of the Fowey Hotel) and other bedtime stories were to make up' The Wind in the Willows'.
It is thought that Fowey influenced these tales along with the time he spent on the Thames as a child. Fowey is considered to be the little grey seaport while there are suggestions that the creek at Lerryn is the home of the water rat and that the woods on the shore are the Wild Wood. 'The Wind in the Willows' was published in 1908 following which Grahame retired from the bank.
