The End of Beauty (1987) by Jorie Graham.
In this book, Helen Vendler writes , Jorie Graham makes a "definitive break with short-lined lyrics" and "to write a poetry of middleness, of suspension, is Graham's chief intellectual and emotional preoccupation in The End of Beauty . ... she defers closure in many poems by a series of ever-approaching asymptotic gestures, each one of them numbered, and each advancing the plot by a micro-measure ... [like] the cinematic freeze-frame ... her numerically interrupted frames say 'Look at yourself for a frozen moment; write it down. Gaze again; write it down. and now glance a third time; and write it down.' The alternations of consciousness as the pen succeeds the gaze are not concealed; rather they are inscribed on the page, number by succeeding number."

graham s poem The Geese (see Appendix A for complete poem) begins with Today as I hang out the wash I see them again, a code (graham, jorie.
http://faculty.vassar.edu/mijoyce/SMargolin/cppgraham.html
Graham's poem "The Geese" (see Appendix A for complete poem) begins with "Today as I hang out the wash I see them again, a code" (Graham, Jorie. The Dream of the Unified Field . New Jersey: The Ecco Press, 1995, pp. 12-13.). To Graham, the geese flying overhead are a kind of language, a key to another meaning. Graham is a poet that inhabits tensions. Most of her work pushes at somehow trying to reconcile the inconsistencies in this world and her life. Coding is of the language of computer programming, the stuff that runs it all, but which is rarely seen, integral but hidden, and indecipherable for most people. Graham's code though, unlike programming source code, is above"For days they have been crossing. We live beneath these geese // as if beneath the passage of time, or a most perfect heading." The notion that something else controls what is visible, what is presented, that something is always connected to something else, as occurs in computer language, is for Graham applicable to the natural world. But she asserts that " things will not remain connected , / will not heal," hinting that "things" are not in their best form. The following lines, "and the world thickens with texture instead of history, / texture instead of place" indicate that the piling up of texture is not desirable, that history and place would be better. Without history, something is always new, always at its beginning, not established, not having any place. It is a state of detachment from anything, a lack of being connected.

poethic we need to learn, as Carole Maso urges in Ava , to "Listen hard," to our others. Ideology and Utopia In his Lectures on Ideology and Utopia , Paul Ricoeur finds in Althusser's concept of ideology is "a system," as in a problematic, also a "system of representation," which has "historical existence . . . [that] is a part of the process of overdetermination," that as he quotes Althusser, "'ideology is a matter of the lived relation between men and their world'" and "all of these concepts overlap" (135). Connected in these concepts is everything about human being, including our sign systems, our psychoanalytic theories, our poetics, our notions of gender and otherness, as well as our ethical and political systems of relation and powerthe relation between men and their world.

Comparison as the Gesture Between Them: John Burnside and Jorie Graham
Laurel Taylor (University of St Andrews) FIRST RESPONSE Though the juxtaposition of the poetry of American Jorie Graham and Scottish-born John Burnside is not an obvious one, no fewer than three poems in Graham’s 1987 The End of Beauty and Burnside’s 1992 Feast Days share either title or subject matter. The coincidence cannot be attributed to cross-influence, as Burnside was not familiar with Graham’s work in 1992, though, interestingly, he is now.. Placing two pairs of these poems together for close reading reveals each poet’s endeavour to come to terms with the ambiguity of change, the consequences of naming and the definition of a true story. The End of Beauty is held together by five ‘self-portrait’ poems, two of which are discussed here. Exploration or re-writing of myths, especially Greek, is central to the volume. A strong religious element is also evident in prayer poems and references to saints. Graham’s style is characterised by disruptions, interruptions and deferral of definitive meaning. Though her poems are full of asides to the reader, numbered sections and the use of an algebraic ‘x’, close examination reveals them as emotionally compelling. Feast Days is given a framework by poems relating to festivals and feasts ranging from the well-known to the strictly personal. Less fragmented than Graham’s, the poems are human and engaging, though they draw on a variety of cultural and literary traditions—Greek, Spanish, Italian and Scottish. These references are juxtaposed with quotidian. In the two volumes of poetry, Graham uses the everyday to illuminate and develop myths; Burnside uses myths to enhance and explain the everyday.

Off to Chicago tomorrow morning to help celebrate my dad's 60th birthday. We're going to eat a lot of hot dogs with sport peppers, visit the Art Institute, and take an architectural boat ride down the Chicago River, all with a minimum of family-induced stress. Hopefully. Tim , you still in the city with the big shoulders? I'll see the rest of you in blogland when we get back Sunday.
Here's a juicy quote from Muriel Rukeyser's The Life of Poetry , which I just discovered the other day, to tide you over till I get back: In our own time, we have become used to an idea of history in which process and relationship are stressed. The science of ecology is only one example of an elaboration of the idea, so that the life of land may be seen in terms of its tides of growth, the feeding of one group on another, the equilibrium reached, broken, and the drive toward another balance and renewal.
We think of the weather now as a dance of airs, predictable in relationship, with its parades of clouds, the appetites of pressure areas, and aftermath of foreseen storms.
