    INTRODUCTION
Graham is a prominent American poet whose verse often begins in everyday experience before ascending into the realms of myth, philosophy and religion. Graham is a champion of the art of poetry and her influence in the world of poetry is significant. She has spent the past twenty-five years teaching poetry as well as writing it, educating new generations of poets at some of the most prestigious writing programs in the country.
    Biographical Information
Graham was born in New York City on May 9, 1951, to Curtis Bill and Beverly Pepper. When Graham was three months old her mother returned to Italy, where Graham grew up speaking multiple languages. Her father was the head of Newsweek The Nation award in 1979, and the American Poetry Review Prize in 1982. Graham has also been honored with a MacArthur Fellowship, the Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets (1991), and the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from The American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. (Ecco/Harper Collins)
The American poet Jorie Graham, the critics tell us, can be compared to T. S. Eliot, Emily Dickinson, and e. e. cummings. A reviewer in the Post-Dispatch said that Graham's style "is so personal that the poems seem to have no author at all..." The "Library Journal" stated that her style is "unapologetically solipsistic," one that is "almost quaintly Miltonic." And the august Richard Eder in the august New York Times said hers was a "remarkable voice." He compared her to Rilke, and said "Even as the brain struggles, the neck hairs lift." Now I have to admit that when I read stuff like this, and then leaf through her poems, my neck hairs don't do much of anything, but the rest of me gets a little weird. I feel like I've just landed on earth from the planet Ixneabar, discovering a world filled with conspiracies of nonsense. Furthermore, there are words and phrases that some of us innocents can't make head nor tail of: "the swag of clay," "nerves wearing only moonlight/whelm sprawl," "The furrow of the hard now."

    TRANSCRIPT
The coveted Pulitzer Prize for poetry went to author Jorie Graham for her book The Dream of the Unified Field . Jim Lehrer spoke to her from Iowa City, Iowa. Click here for the RealAudio version of this discussion JIM LEHRER: Ms. Graham, welcome, and congratulations! JORIE GRAHAM, Poet: (Iowa City) Thank you. JIM LEHRER: How did poetry come into your life? JORIE GRAHAM: Well, actually, I was studying film at New York University and lost my way down a corridor one day, and I heard some words floating out of the doorway. Umm, they were, "I have heard the mermaid singing each to each, and I do not think that they will sing to me," and I thought, what is that? JIM LEHRER: Yeah. JORIE GRAHAM: And, umm, it turns out it was M. L. Rosenthal reading "The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock" in his classroom, and I just sank into the back seat of that classroom and in some sense I think I've been sitting there ever since. JIM LEHRER: And you've been literally writing poetry ever since, right?

Graham perceives the landscape with a sense of immediacy
and urgency, and she promotes an interactive involvement
with the environment through encounters in which the poet's
structural technique and sensuous language reveal an individual
in the act of contemplating the beauty or the disfigurement
of the world she discovers around her. I n her ninth collection of poems, Never, Jorie Graham offers poetry that appears to again position her among such varied and ambitious voices of the American landscape and philosophy as Walt Whitman, Wallace Stevens, T.S. Eliot, Robert Penn Warren, and John Ashbery, just to mention a handful. As in Graham's previous books, the works included in Never challenge readers to re-examine their approach to evaluating poetic presentation and invite readers to re-experience some of the more common subject matter found in American poetry. This collection particularly suggests new ways of viewing and understanding today's natural world: Graham perceives the landscape with a sense of immediacy and urgency, and she promotes an interactive involvement with the environment through encounters in which the poet's structural technique and sensuous language reveal an individual in the act of contemplating the beauty or the disfigurement of the world she discovers around her. In this manner, she also constructs an

    GRAHAM, JORIE. Overlord: Poems.
HarperCollins Publishers, New York: 2005. Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good condition. What does it mean to be fully present in a human life? How - in the face of the carnage of war, the no longer merely threatened destruction of the natural world, the faceless threat of spiritual oversimplification and reactive fear - does one retain one's capacity to be both present and responsive? And to what extent does our capacity to be present, to be fully ourselves, depend on our relationship to an other and our understanding of and engagement with otherness itself? With what forces does the sheer act of apprehending make us complicit? What powers lord over us and what do we, as a species, and as souls, lord over? These are among the questions Jorie Graham, in her most personal and urgent collection to date, undertakes to explore, often from a vantagee point geographically, as well as historically, other. ¶ 95 pages.

Wheel, kinetic flow, rising and falling water, ingots, levers, and keys, I believe in you This excerpt introduces some basic ideas of physics: observation, solution, and proof. Wheels, kinetics, and rising and falling water are all simple objects and concepts used to prove that physics, simply put, exists. Werner Heisenberg, the Nobel Laureate who formulated the Heisenberg Principle of Uncertainty, argued that things in nature do not exist unless we observe them. Things that cannot be measured or observed therefore have no meaning in the physical world ("Werner Heisenberg & The Uncertainty Principle"). This was a much-refuted idea, yet it is mathematically founded and cannot be equally countered. In Graham’s “The Dream of the Unified Field,” she describes a flock of starlings in a tree very vividly, from their range of colors to how her mind is interpreting their presence. Parts she thought
