Send this interview to a friend Read previous BookPage interviews For Sue Grafton, it's as easy as ABC INTERVIEW BY STEPHANIE SWILLEY It's 16 down and 10 to go. Sue Grafton is working her way through the alphabet with the mystery series featuring private investigator Kinsey Millhone, and this month she follows O is for Outlaw with her latest release, P is for Peril . Coming up with plenty of title possibilities for the letter "P" was not a problem for this prolific author. " 'O' was tricky," Grafton explains, "but when you come to 'P,' you've got poison, pistol, peril, persecute, prosecute, prison, police, whatever you can go on and on." Just don't ask her what the book is about, because she candidly admits in a phone interview from her home in Louisville, Kentucky (where she was born and raised) that she's "already forgotten it." "I'm on to the next one," she says, "and my only survival skill is to delete from my brain anything that doesn't exactly pertain to the book I'm working on."

Sue Grafton
Sue Grafton is the author of a long (and to be honest, not entirely innovative) series of detective novels. They're known as the alphabet novels, "A is for Alibi", "P is for Peril" and so on. Grafton's been writing them for 25 years now and has perhaps another decade to go to finish the series. Here's the wikipedia background on Sue Grafton Her experience as a screenwriter taught her the basics of structuring a story, writing dialogue, and creating action sequences, and Grafton felt ready to return to writing fiction. While going through a "bitter divorce and custody battle that lasted 6 long years" Grafton would make herself feel better by imagining ways to kill or maim her ex-husband. Her fantasies were so vivid that she decided to write them down.

'G' Is for Grafton Mystery novelist Sue Grafton soups the alphabet By Joy Lanzendorfer Sue Grafton, author of the alphabet mysteries starting with A Is for Alibi , has sold millions of books. Her newest endeavor, R Is for Ricochet (Putnam; $26.95), is no exception. Released just two weeks ago, it is already No. 10 on the Amazon.com top sellers list as of this writing. Fans eagerly await each installment of the series about hard-boiled female private investigator, Kinsey Millhone. Leaving the solitude of her Santa Barbara writing desk for a book tour can be taxing for Grafton, an introvert by nature, who appears at Copperfield's on July 29. But she still loves her readers. "They are the dearest people on the planet," she says by phone from her home office. "I feel like I'm walking in a room full of friends every time I do a signing." Even though she writes about crime, Grafton says she never sees the kind of obsessed fans that other popular authors have complained about. "The sort of people who are attracted to my books tend to be good souls," she says. "I don't write butchery books about animals and children being dismembered. I think the people who are ultimately attracted to my books are involved in Kinsey's life and want to see what happens next. Readers who are attracted to the more gruesome and grisly naturally gravitate to other writers."

A Conversation With Sue Grafton
By Claire E. White Internationally bestselling author Sue Grafton has come a long way from being a curious little girl in Louisville, Kentucky who once rode the bus from one end of the line to the other just to see what was there. The daughter of a well-known bond attorney, C.W. Grafton, who wrote mysteries on the side, and a former high school chemistry teacher, Vivian, Grafton recalls her parents as "acoholics of a quite intellectual but benign sort. The were good people. They loved books. They were witty and amusing." While growing up, she learned to look below the surface for the hidden meaning in things, feeling keenly the emotional undercurrents in the household. Vivian died on Sue's twentieth birthday. But despite difficulties in her childhood, Grafton clearly is not the type to complain. She, like her protagonist, Kinsey Millhone, have a very typically Southern outlook on life; take responsibility for yourself and when tragedy strikes, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and look for the next challenge. Sue didn't care much for school as a child, and after graduating from the University of Louisville with a major in English

Don't let that ex-husband get you down! Just start a whole new job." That is what the diminutive southern born writer did when she started her bestselling series of Alphabet murder mysteries in the early 1980s. "I was in the middle of a very bitter divorce," says Grafton, her voice somehow soft, southern and staccato all at once. The words and ideas flowing quickly, as though in a race to fit all those thoughts into a few sentences: a style that characterizes her work. "I just thought you have to be nice in life and everything would come out all right. Which is often true, unless you're getting divorced. Then nothing comes out right." Niceness, says Grafton, wasn't working in this instance. "So, I used to lie in bed at night just thinking of ways to do him in. And I came up with some doozies. But I knew I was going to get caught at it because I credit the police with quite a bit of intelligence. And I knew I'd flub it. So I thought, why don't I put this plot between the covers of a book and get paid for it? And that launched this whole new career." The new career has thus far included 13 mysteries featuring Grafton's plucky Southern Californian PI, Kinsey Millhone. The latest in the series

z is for zenith Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Kinsey Millhone is a private investigator in Santa Barbaraexcuse me, that should be Santa Teresa California. Kinsey is also the heroine of a series of alphabetically titled mysteries, beginning with A is for Alibi and B is for Burglar . Grafton's books probably don't rate very highly as puzzle mysteries; the one thing you can be sure of is that the murderer is the last person you'd expect, they will confess everything in the last few pages, they probably end up dead rather than in jail, and Kinsey typically finds out for sure who they are because they try to kill her. That's perhaps too broad a generalization, but seems more or less true to me. Santa Teresa comes to life on the page, and Kinsey is supported by broad and amusing group of continuing characters. Because of the background story involving Kinsey and her acquaintances, the books are best read in order.
